1 In the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judea, in the third year, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord delivered it into his hands, and Jehoiakim the king of Judea, and a part of the holy vessels of the Lord; and he carried them away to Babylon, and set them up in his idol house. 3 And the king told Abiesdri his chief eunuch to bring him some of the sons of the nobles of Israel, and of the royal family, and of the chosen ones, 4 young men without blemish and handsome, and skilled in all wisdom, and learned, and understanding, and wise, and strong, so as to be in the king's house, and to teach them letters and the Chaldean language, 5 and that an allowance should be given them from the king's house every day, and from the royal table, and from the wine which the king drinks, and that they should be trained three years, and that out of these some should stand before the king. 6 And among them were, of the race of the sons of Israel from Judea, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah. 7 And the chief eunuch gave them names: to Daniel, Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, Shadrach; and to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego. 8 And Daniel resolved in his heart that he would not be defiled with the king's dinner and with the wine which he drinks; and he asked the chief eunuch that he might not be defiled. 9 And the Lord gave Daniel honor and favor before the chief eunuch. 10 And the chief eunuch said to Daniel, I am in fear of my lord the king, who appointed your food and your drink, for fear that he will see your faces changed and weak compared with the young men of the foreigners who are brought up with you, and I put my own neck in danger. 11 And Daniel said to Abiesdri, the chief eunuch who was appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah, 12 Test your servants, I pray, for ten days, and let there be given us of the pulse of the earth, so that we may eat it and drink water. 13 And if our appearance is seen to be changed compared with the other young men who eat from the royal dinner, then as you will, so deal with your servants. 14 And he dealt with them in this manner, and tested them ten days. 15 And after the ten days their appearance was seen to be good, and the condition of their body better than that of the other young men who ate the royal dinner. 16 And Abiesdri took away their dinner and their wine, and gave them pulse in its place. 17 And to the young men the Lord gave knowledge and understanding and prudence in all the art of letters; and to Daniel he gave understanding in every matter, and in visions and dreams, and in all wisdom. 18 And after these days the king commanded that they be brought in, and they were brought in by the chief eunuch to king Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And the king talked with them, and none was found among the wise men like Daniel and Hananiah and Mishael and Azariah; and they were in attendance on the king. 20 And in every matter and understanding and instruction which the king asked of them, he found them ten times wiser than the sophists and the philosophers in all his kingdom; and the king honored them, and appointed them rulers, and declared them wise above all his own men in affairs in all his land and in his kingdom. 21 And Daniel was there until the first year of the kingdom of Cyrus king of the Persians.
1 And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar it happened that the king fell into visions and dreams, and was troubled in his dream, and his sleep went from him. 2 And the king commanded that the enchanters and the magi and the sorcerers of the Chaldeans be brought in, to tell the king his dreams; and they came and stood before the king. 3 And the king said to them, I have seen a dream, and my spirit was stirred; so I wish to know the dream. 4 And the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Syrian, lord king, live for ever: tell your servants your dream, and we will declare to you its interpretation. 5 And the king answered and said to the Chaldeans, If you do not tell me the dream truly and make plain to me its interpretation, you shall be made an example, and your possessions shall be taken into the royal treasury. 6 But if you make the dream clear to me and tell its interpretation, you shall receive all kinds of gifts and shall be honored by me. Show me the dream, and interpret it. 7 And they answered a second time, saying, king, tell the vision, and your servants will interpret it accordingly. 8 And the king said to them, I know truly that you are buying time, since you have seen that the matter has gone from me; so as I have commanded, so it shall be. 9 If you do not tell me the dream truly and make plain its interpretation, you shall fall under death; for you have agreed together to make false speeches before me until the time is changed. Now then, if you tell me the thing which I saw in the night, I shall know that you will also make plain its interpretation. 10 And the Chaldeans answered before the king, No one on the earth will be able to tell the king what he has seen, as you ask; and no king and no ruler asks such a thing of any wise man and magus and Chaldean. 11 And the matter which you seek, king, is heavy and glorious, and there is no one who will make these things plain to the king, except an angel, whose dwelling is not with any flesh; so it cannot be done as you suppose. 12 Then the king became gloomy and very sorrowful, and commanded that all the wise men of Babylonia be led out. 13 And it was decreed that all should be killed; and Daniel and all who were with him were sought, so that they should perish with them. 14 Then Daniel spoke with counsel and judgment to Arioch the chief cook of the king, whom he had commanded to lead out the sophists of Babylonia, 15 and he inquired of him, saying, Why is this decree so bitter from the king? Then Arioch made the command known to Daniel. 16 And Daniel went in quickly to the king, and asked that time be given him by the king, and that he might make all things plain before the king. 17 Then Daniel went away to his house and showed everything to Hananiah and Mishael and Azariah, his companions. 18 And he charged them to seek fasting and pleading and help from the Lord Most High concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and those with him should not be given up to destruction together with the sophists of Babylon. 19 Then the mystery of the king was revealed clearly to Daniel in a vision in that very night. Then Daniel blessed the Lord Most High, 20 and he cried out and said, The name of the great Lord shall be blessed for ever, for wisdom and greatness are his. 21 And he changes times and seasons, removing kings and setting them up, giving wisdom to the wise and understanding to those who are in knowledge, 22 revealing the deep and dark things, and knowing the things in the darkness and the things in the light, and with him is the place of rest. 23 To you, Lord of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for you have given me wisdom and prudence, and now you have made known to me all that I asked, so that I may make it plain to the king in this matter. 24 And Daniel went in to Arioch, who was appointed by the king to kill all the sophists of Babylonia, and said to him, Do not destroy the sophists of Babylonia, but bring me in to the king, and I will make each thing plain to the king. 25 Then Arioch in haste brought Daniel in to the king, and said to him, I have found a wise man from the captivity of the sons of Judea, who will make each thing plain to the king. 26 And the king answered and said to Daniel, who was called in Chaldean Belteshazzar, Will you be able to make plain to me the vision which I saw, and its interpretation? 27 And Daniel cried out before the king and said, The making plain of the mystery which the king has seen does not belong to wise men and sorcerers and enchanters and gazarenes; 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, who has made plain to king Nebuchadnezzar what must happen in the last days. king, live for ever: the dream and the vision of your head on your bed is this. 29 You, king, lying on your bed, saw all that must happen in the last days, and he who reveals mysteries has made plain to you what must happen. 30 And to me also this mystery was revealed, not through the wisdom that is in me above all men, but it was made known to me so that it might be made plain to the king, the things which you conceived in your heart in knowledge. 31 And you, king, saw, and look, an image; and that image was very great, and its appearance surpassing, and it stood before you, and the appearance of the image was fearful. 32 And its head was of fine gold, the chest and the arms of silver, the belly and the thighs of bronze, 33 and the legs of iron, the feet part of iron and part of earthenware. 34 You saw until a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands, and it struck the image on the feet of iron and earthenware, and ground them to powder. 35 Then the iron and the earthenware and the bronze and the silver and the gold became fine together, and became like chaff finer than that on a threshing floor, and the wind blew them away so that nothing was left of them; and the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and struck all the earth. 36 This is the vision; and we will also tell its interpretation before the king. 37 You, king, are king of kings, and to you the Lord of heaven has given the rule and the kingdom and the strength and the honor and the glory. 38 In all the world, from men and wild beasts and birds of the sky and the fish of the sea, he has delivered them under your hands, to be lord of all. You are the head of gold. 39 And after you shall rise up a kingdom lesser than you, and a third kingdom, another, of bronze, which shall be lord over all the earth. 40 And a fourth kingdom, strong as iron, which subdues all things and cuts down every tree; and all the earth shall be shaken. 41 And as you saw its feet, part of potter's earthenware and part of iron, another kingdom shall be divided in two within it, as you saw the iron mixed together with the clay earthenware. 42 And the toes of the feet, part of iron and part of earthenware: part of the kingdom shall be strong and part shall be broken. 43 And as you saw the iron mixed together with the clay earthenware, they shall be mixed together in the race of men, but they shall not be of one mind nor well disposed to one another, just as iron cannot be blended with earthenware. 44 And in the times of these kings the God of heaven shall set up another kingdom, which shall be for ever and shall not be destroyed; and this kingdom shall not allow another nation, but shall strike and do away with these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. 45 As you saw a stone cut out of a mountain without hands, and it crushed the earthenware, the iron and the bronze and the silver and the gold, the great God has made known to the king the things that shall be in the last days; and the vision is exact, and its interpretation is faithful. 46 Then king Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face to the ground and bowed before Daniel, and commanded that sacrifices and drink offerings be made to him. 47 And the king cried out to Daniel and said, Truly your God is God of gods and Lord of kings, who alone brings hidden mysteries to light, since you were able to make plain this mystery. 48 Then king Nebuchadnezzar magnified Daniel, and gave him great and many gifts, and set him over the affairs of Babylonia, and appointed him ruler and leader of all the sophists of Babylonia. 49 And Daniel asked the king that Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego be set over the affairs of Babylonia; and Daniel was in the royal court.
1 In the eighteenth year Nebuchadnezzar the king, who governed cities and countries and all who dwell on the earth from India to Ethiopia, made an image of gold; its height was sixty cubits and its breadth six cubits; and he set it up in the plain of the enclosure of the country of Babylonia. 2 And Nebuchadnezzar, king of kings and lord of the whole world, sent to gather together all the nations and tribes and tongues, satraps, generals, governors and consuls, administrators, and those in authority in each country, and all who were throughout the world, to come to the dedication of the golden image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. 3 And those already named stood before the image. 4 And the herald proclaimed to the crowds, To you it is commanded, nations and countries, peoples and tongues: 5 When you hear the sound of the trumpet, pipe and lyre, sambuca and harp, symphony and every kind of music, fall down and worship the golden image which Nebuchadnezzar the king has set up; 6 and whoever does not fall down and worship, they shall cast him into the burning furnace of fire. 7 And at that time, when all the nations heard the sound of the trumpet and every sound of music, all the nations, tribes and tongues fell down and worshiped the golden image which Nebuchadnezzar had set up, before it. 8 At that time men who were Chaldeans came forward and slandered the Jews. 9 And they answered and said, lord king, live for ever. 10 You, king, commanded and decreed that every man who hears the sound of the trumpet and every sound of music should fall down and worship the golden image, 11 and whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into the burning furnace of fire. 12 But there are certain men, Jews, whom you set over the country of Babylonia, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego; these men have not feared your command, and have not served your idol, and have not worshiped your golden image which you set up. 13 Then Nebuchadnezzar, enraged with anger, commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego be brought. Then the men were brought to the king. 14 And Nebuchadnezzar the king saw them and said to them, Why, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, do you not serve my gods, and do not worship the golden image which I set up? 15 And now, if you are ready, as soon as you hear the trumpet and every sound of music, to fall down and worship the golden image which I set up, well; but if not, know that if you do not worship, you shall be cast at once into the burning furnace of fire; and what god shall deliver you out of my hands? 16 And Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego answered and said to king Nebuchadnezzar, king, we have no need to answer you concerning this command. 17 For there is a God in the heavens, our one Lord, whom we fear, who is able to deliver us out of the furnace of fire; and out of your hands, king, he will deliver us. 18 And then it shall be plain to you that we neither serve your idol nor worship your golden image which you set up. 19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with rage, and the form of his face was changed, and he commanded that the furnace be heated seven times more than it was meant to be heated. 20 And he commanded the strongest men in the army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego hand and foot and to cast them into the burning furnace of fire. 21 Then those men were bound hand and foot, with their shoes on and their tiaras on their heads, together with their clothing, and they were cast into the furnace. 22 Since the king's command was urgent, and the furnace was heated seven times more than before, the men who were chosen bound them hand and foot, and brought them to the furnace, and cast them into it. 23 So the flame went out from the furnace and burned up and killed the men who bound Azariah and those with him; but they themselves were preserved. 24 So then Hananiah and Azariah and Mishael prayed and sang hymns to the Lord, when the king commanded that they be cast into the furnace. 25 And Azariah stood and prayed thus, and he opened his mouth and gave thanks to the Lord together with his companions in the midst of the fire, while the furnace was heated exceedingly by the Chaldeans; and they said, 26 You are blessed, Lord, the God of our fathers, and your name is to be praised and glorified for ever. 27 For you are just in all the things which you have done to us, and all your works are true, and your ways are right, and all your judgments are true. 28 And you have executed true judgments in all that you have brought on us and on your holy city, Jerusalem, the city of our fathers; for in truth and judgment you have done all these things because of our sins. 29 For we have sinned in all things, and have done lawlessly in departing from you, and have sinned greatly in all things, and have not obeyed the commandments of your law, 30 nor kept them, nor done as you commanded us, that it might go well with us. 31 And now all that you have brought on us, and all that you have done to us, you have done in true judgment. 32 And you delivered us into the hands of our enemies, lawless and most hateful rebels, and to a king unjust and the most wicked in all the earth. 33 And now we cannot open our mouth; shame and reproach have come on your servants and on those who worship you. 34 Do not give us up to the end, for your name's sake, and do not break your covenant, 35 and do not take away your mercy from us, for the sake of Abraham who is loved by you, and for the sake of Isaac your servant, and Israel your holy one, 36 as you spoke to them, saying that you would multiply their seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that is on the shore of the sea. 37 For, Master, we have become fewer than all the nations, and we are brought low in all the earth this day because of our sins. 38 And at this time there is no ruler and prophet, nor leader, nor whole burnt offering, nor sacrifice, nor offering, nor incense, nor place to offer first fruits before you and to find mercy. 39 But with a crushed soul and a humbled spirit may we be accepted, as with whole burnt offerings of rams and bulls, and as with tens of thousands of fat lambs. 40 So let our sacrifice be before you this day, and make atonement behind you, for there is no shame for those who trust in you, and bring it to completion behind you. 41 And now we follow you with our whole heart, and we fear you, and we seek your face; do not put us to shame, 42 but deal with us according to your gentleness and according to the abundance of your mercy, 43 and deliver us according to your wonders, and give glory to your name, Lord. 44 And let all who show evil to your servants be put to confusion, and let them be put to shame, stripped of all their power, and let their strength be broken; 45 let them know that you alone are the Lord God, and glorious over the whole world. 46 And the king's servants who cast them in did not stop heating the furnace; and when they had cast the three all at once into the furnace, and the furnace was red hot, seven times its usual heat, and when they had cast them in, those who cast them in were above them, and the others fed the fire beneath them with naphtha and tow and pitch and brushwood. 47 And the flame poured out above the furnace to forty-nine cubits; 48 and it broke through and burned up those of the Chaldeans whom it found around the furnace. 49 But an angel of the Lord came down together with Azariah and those with him into the furnace, and shook the flame of the fire out of the furnace, 50 and made the midst of the furnace like a whistling breeze of dew; and the fire did not touch them at all, and did not hurt them, and did not trouble them. 51 And the three took it up as from one mouth, and sang hymns and glorified and blessed and exalted God in the furnace, saying, 52 You are blessed, Lord, the God of our fathers, and to be praised and highly exalted for ever; and blessed is the holy name of your glory, and to be praised above all and highly exalted for all ages. 53 You are blessed in the temple of your holy glory, and to be sung above all and glorified above all for ever. 54 You are blessed on the throne of your kingdom, and to be sung and highly exalted for ever. 55 You are blessed who look upon the depths, sitting upon the cherubim, and to be praised and glorified for ever. 56 You are blessed in the firmament, and to be sung and glorified for ever. 57 Bless the Lord, all you works of the Lord; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 58 Bless the Lord, you angels of the Lord; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 59 Bless the Lord, you heavens; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 60 Bless the Lord, all you waters that are above the heaven; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 61 Bless the Lord, all you powers of the Lord; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 62 Bless the Lord, sun and moon; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 63 Bless the Lord, you stars of heaven; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 64 Bless the Lord, every shower and dew; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 65 Bless the Lord, all you winds; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 66 Bless the Lord, fire and heat; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 67 Bless the Lord, frost and cold; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 68 Bless the Lord, dews and snowstorms; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 69 Bless the Lord, ice and cold; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 70 Bless the Lord, hoarfrosts and snows; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 71 Bless the Lord, nights and days; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 72 Bless the Lord, light and darkness; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 73 Bless the Lord, lightnings and clouds; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 74 Let the earth bless the Lord; let it sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 75 Bless the Lord, mountains and hills; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 76 Bless the Lord, all things that grow on the earth; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 77 Bless the Lord, you springs; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 78 Bless the Lord, seas and rivers; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 79 Bless the Lord, you sea monsters and all that move in the waters; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 80 Bless the Lord, all you birds of the sky; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 81 Bless the Lord, four-footed creatures and wild beasts of the earth; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 82 Bless the Lord, you sons of men; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 83 Bless the Lord, Israel; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 84 Bless the Lord, you priests; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 85 Bless the Lord, you servants; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 86 Bless the Lord, you spirits and souls of the righteous; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 87 Bless the Lord, you who are holy and humble in heart; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever. 88 Bless the Lord, Hananiah, Azariah, Mishael; sing hymns to him and highly exalt him for ever; for he has rescued us from Hades, and saved us from the hand of death, and delivered us out of the midst of the burning flame, and redeemed us from the fire. 89 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy is for ever. 90 Bless the God of gods, all you who worship him; sing hymns and give thanks, for his mercy is for ever and for ever and ever. 91 And when the king heard them singing hymns, and stood and saw them alive, then Nebuchadnezzar the king marveled, and rose up in haste, and said to his friends, 92 Look, I see four men loose, walking about in the fire, and no harm has come to them, and the appearance of the fourth is the likeness of an angel of God. 93 And the king came near to the door of the furnace burning with fire, and called them by name, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, servants of the God of gods, the Most High, come out of the fire. So then the men came out of the midst of the fire. 94 And the consuls, governors, and chief patriarchs, and the friends of the king were gathered together, and they saw those men, that the fire had not touched their body, and their hair was not burned, and their trousers were not changed, nor was there any smell of fire on them. 95 And Nebuchadnezzar the king answered and said, Blessed is the Lord, the God of Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, who sent his angel and saved his servants who trusted in him; for they set aside the command of the king, and gave up their bodies to burning, so that they might not serve nor worship any other god but their own God. 96 And now I decree that every nation and all tribes and all tongues, whoever blasphemes against the Lord, the God of Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, shall be torn limb from limb, and his house shall be confiscated; for there is no other god who will be able to deliver in this way. 97 So then the king gave Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego authority over the whole country, and appointed them rulers.
1 2 3 4 In the eighteenth year of his reign Nebuchadnezzar said, I was at peace in my house, and prospering on my throne. 5 I saw a dream, and was alarmed, and fear fell upon me. 6 7 8 9 10 I was sleeping, and look, a high tree growing on the earth; its appearance was great, and there was no other like it. 11 12 Its branches were about thirty stadia in length, and under it all the beasts of the earth found shade, and in it the birds of the sky made their nests; its fruit was abundant and good, and it supplied all living creatures. 11 And its appearance was great; its top came near to heaven, and its trunk to the clouds, filling the things under heaven; the sun and the moon dwelt in it, and gave light to all the earth. 13 I was watching in my sleep, and look, an angel was sent in strength from heaven, 14 and he called out and said to it, Cut it down and destroy it; for it is commanded by the Most High to uproot it and make it useless. 15 And thus he said, Leave one root of it in the earth, so that with the beasts of the earth on the mountains he may feed on grass like an ox, 16 and his body may be changed by the dew of heaven, and he may be pastured with them seven years, 17 until he knows that the Lord of heaven has authority over all that is in heaven and on the earth, and does among them whatever he wills. 17a Before me it was cut down in one day, and its destruction was in one hour of the day; and its branches were given to every wind, and it was dragged and thrown away; and he ate the grass of the earth with the beasts of the earth, and was delivered into prison, and was bound by them with fetters and with handcuffs of bronze. I marveled greatly at all these things, and my sleep departed from my eyes. 18 And I rose early from my bed, and called Daniel, the ruler of the sophists and the leader of those who interpret dreams, and I told him the dream, and he showed me all its interpretation. 19 And Daniel marveled greatly, and a foreboding pressed hard on him; and he was afraid, as trembling took hold of him and his appearance was changed; and shaking his head for one hour, and marveling, he answered me with a gentle voice, king, may this dream come upon those who hate you, and its interpretation upon your enemies. 20 The tree that was planted in the earth, whose appearance was great, is you, king. 21 And all the birds of the sky that nest in it are the strength of the earth and of the nations and of all the tongues, to the ends of the earth, and all the countries serve you. 22 And as for that tree being lifted up and coming near to heaven, and its trunk touching the clouds: you, king, were exalted above all the men who are on the face of all the earth; your heart was lifted up with pride and strength in the things toward the Holy One and his angels; your works were seen, in that you laid waste the house of the living God because of the sins of the consecrated people. 23 And the vision which you saw, that an angel was sent in strength from the Lord, and that he said to remove the tree and cut it down: the judgment of the great God shall come upon you, 24 and the Most High and his angels are running down upon you. 25 They shall lead you away to prison, and send you away to a desert place. 26 And the root of the tree which was left, since it was not uprooted: the place of your throne shall be kept for you for a time and an hour. Look, they are being made ready against you, and they shall scourge you, and bring upon you the things that are decreed. 27 The Lord lives in heaven, and his authority is over all the earth. Pray to him concerning your sins, and redeem all your iniquities with almsgiving, so that gentleness may be given you, and you may be many days on the throne of your kingdom, and he may not destroy you. Love these words; for my word is exact, and your time is full. 28 And at the end of the words, when Nebuchadnezzar heard the interpretation of the vision, he kept the words in his heart. 29 And after twelve months the king was walking about on the walls of the city with all his glory, and going along its towers; 30 and he answered and said, This is Babylon the great, which I have built, and the house of my kingdom shall be called by the might of my strength, to the honor of my glory. 31 And at the end of his speech he heard a voice from heaven: To you it is said, King Nebuchadnezzar, the kingdom of Babylon is taken away from you, and is given to another, a despised man in your house. Look, I set him over your kingdom, and he shall receive your authority and your glory and your luxury, so that you may know that the God of heaven has authority in the kingdom of men, and will give it to whomever he wishes. And by sunrise another king shall make merry in your house, and shall take hold of your glory and your strength and your authority. 32 And the angels shall drive you for seven years, and you shall not be seen, nor shall you speak with any man. They shall feed you grass like an ox, and your pasture shall be from the green herbs of the earth. Look, in place of your glory they shall bind you, and another shall have the house of your luxury and your kingdom. 33 And by morning all things shall be fulfilled upon you, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and nothing of all these things shall fall short. 33a I, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, was bound seven years; they fed me grass like an ox, and I ate of the green herbs of the earth. And after seven years I devoted my soul to pleading, and I made request concerning my sins before the Lord the God of heaven, and concerning my ignorances I prayed to the great God of gods. 33b And my hair became like the wings of an eagle, my nails like those of a lion; my flesh and my heart were changed; I walked about naked with the beasts of the earth. I saw a dream, and forebodings took hold of me, and after a time much sleep took me, and drowsiness fell upon me. 34 And at the end of the seven years the time of my redemption came, and my sins and my ignorances were fulfilled before the God of heaven. And I prayed concerning my ignorances to the great God of gods, and look, one angel called me from heaven, saying, Nebuchadnezzar, serve the holy God of heaven, and give glory to the Most High; the kingdom of your nation is given back to you. 35 36 At that time my kingdom was restored to me, and my glory was given back to me. 37 I confess the Most High, and praise him who created the heaven and the earth and the seas and the rivers and all that is in them; I give thanks and praise, for he is God of gods and Lord of lords and King of kings, for he does signs and wonders, and changes times and seasons, taking away the kingdom of kings and setting up others in their place. 37a From now on I will serve him, and from fear of him trembling has taken hold of me, and I praise all his holy ones. For the gods of the nations do not have in themselves strength to turn the kingdom of a king over to another king, and to kill and to make alive, and to do signs and great and fearful wonders, and to change exceedingly great matters, as the God of heaven did with me, and changed great matters upon me. All the days of my reign, for my soul, I will bring sacrifices to the Most High for a sweet aroma to the Lord, and I will do what is pleasing before him, I and my people, my nation and my countries that are under my authority. And those who have spoken against the God of heaven, and those who are caught speaking anything, these I will condemn to death. 37b And king Nebuchadnezzar wrote a circular letter to all the nations in every place, and to the countries and all the tongues that dwell in all the countries, for generation after generation: Praise the Lord the God of heaven, and bring sacrifice and offering to him gloriously. I, king of kings, confess him gloriously, for thus he has done with me: on that very day he seated me on my throne, and I took hold of my authority and my kingdom among my people, and my majesty was restored to me. 37c Nebuchadnezzar the king, to all the nations and all the countries and all who dwell in them: May peace be multiplied to you at all times. And now I will show you the deeds which the great God has done with me; and it seemed good to me to show you and your sophists that there is a God, and his wonders are great; his kingdom is a kingdom for ever, his authority from generation to generation. And he sent letters concerning all that had happened to him in his kingdom to all the nations that were under his kingdom.
0 Belshazzar the king made a great feast on the day of the dedication of his palace, and of his nobles he invited two thousand men. On that day Belshazzar, lifted up by the wine and boasting, praised all the molten and carved gods of the nations in his place, and did not give praise to the Most High God. In that very night fingers as of a man came out and wrote on the wall of his house, on the plaster, opposite the lamp: Mane, Peres, Tekel. And their interpretation is: Mane, it is numbered; Peres, it is taken away; Tekel, it is weighed. 1 Belshazzar the king made a great banquet for his companions, and he drank wine. 2 And his heart was lifted up, and he said to bring the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar his father had brought from Jerusalem, and to pour wine in them for his companions. 3 And they were brought, and they drank from them, 4 and they blessed their idols made with hands, and did not bless the eternal God, who had authority over their spirit. 5 In that very hour fingers as of a man's hand came out and wrote on the wall of his house, on the plaster, opposite the light, before king Belshazzar, and he saw a hand writing. 6 And his appearance was changed, and fears and forebodings pressed hard upon him. So the king hurried and rose up, and looked at that writing, and his companions around him were boasting. 7 And the king called out with a loud voice to call the enchanters and sorcerers and Chaldeans and gazarenes, to tell the interpretation of the writing. And they came in to look and see the writing, and they could not interpret the writing to the king. Then the king set forth a decree, saying, Every man who shows the interpretation of the writing, he shall clothe him in purple, and put a gold necklace on him, and authority over the third part of the kingdom shall be given him. 8 And the enchanters and sorcerers and gazarenes came in, and no one was able to tell the interpretation of the writing. 9 Then the king called the queen concerning the sign, and showed her how great it was, and that no man was able to tell the king the interpretation of the writing. 10 Then the queen reminded him of Daniel, who was of the captivity of Judea, 11 and said to the king, The man was knowledgeable and wise, and surpassed all the wise men of Babylon; 12 and a holy spirit is in him; and in the days of your father the king he showed extraordinary interpretations to Nebuchadnezzar your father. 13 Then Daniel was brought in to the king, and the king answered and said to him, 14 15 16 Daniel, can you show me the interpretation of the writing? And I will clothe you in purple, and put a gold necklace on you, and you shall have authority over the third part of my kingdom. 17 Then Daniel stood before the writing and read it, and thus he answered the king: This is the writing: It is numbered, it is reckoned, it is taken away; and the hand that wrote stood still. And this is their interpretation. 18 19 20 21 22 23 king, you made a banquet for your friends, and you drank wine, and the vessels of the house of the living God were brought to you, and you drank from them, you and your nobles, and you praised all the idols made by the hands of men, and you did not bless the living God; and your spirit is in his hand, and he gave you your kingdom, and you did not bless him nor praise him. 24 25 26-28 This is the interpretation of the writing: The time of your reign is numbered; your kingdom is coming to an end; your kingdom is cut short and finished; it is given to the Medes and to the Persians. 27 28 29 Then Belshazzar the king clothed Daniel in purple, and put a gold necklace on him, and gave him authority over the third part of his kingdom. 30 And the interpretation came upon Belshazzar the king, and the kingdom was taken away from the Chaldeans and was given to the Medes and to the Persians.
1 And Artaxerxes of the Medes received the kingdom; and Darius was full of days and glorious in old age. 2 And he appointed a hundred and twenty-seven satraps over all his kingdom, 3 and over them three men as their leaders; and Daniel was one of the three men, 4 having authority above all in the kingdom. And Daniel was clothed in purple, and great and glorious before Darius the king, since he was glorious and knowledgeable and understanding, and a holy spirit was in him, and he prospered in the king's business which he carried out. Then the king resolved to set Daniel over all his kingdom, with the two men whom he had appointed with him and the hundred and twenty-seven satraps. 5 And when the king resolved to set Daniel over all his kingdom, then the two young men took counsel and judgment among themselves, saying to one another, since they found no sin nor ignorance against Daniel for which they could accuse him to the king, 6 and they said, Come, let us set up a decree among ourselves, that no man shall make any request nor pray any prayer to any god for thirty days, except to Darius the king; otherwise he shall die; so that they might overthrow Daniel before the king, and he might be thrown into the lions' pit. For they knew that Daniel prays and pleads to the Lord his God three times a day. 7 Then those men came and said before the king, 8 We have set up a decree and a statute, that every man who prays any prayer or makes any request of any god for thirty days, except of Darius the king, shall be thrown into the lions' pit. 9 And they asked the king to establish the decree and not to change it, because they knew that Daniel prays and pleads three times a day, so that he might be overthrown through the king and thrown into the lions' pit. 10 And so king Darius established and confirmed it. 11 But when Daniel learned of the decree which he had set up against him, he opened windows in his upper room facing Jerusalem, and fell on his face three times a day, as he used to do before, and pleaded. 12 And they watched Daniel, and caught him praying three times a day, every day. 13 Then these men appealed to the king and said, king Darius, did you not make a decree that no man should pray any prayer nor make any request of any god for thirty days, but of you, king? Otherwise he shall be thrown into the lions' pit. And the king answered and said to them, The word is exact, and the decree stands. 13a And they said to him, We adjure you by the ordinances of the Medes and Persians, that you not change the command, nor show partiality, and that you not lessen anything of what has been said, and that you punish the man who has not kept to this decree. And he said, I will do so as you say, and this is established by me. 14 And they said, Look, we have found Daniel your friend praying and pleading before the face of his God three times a day. 15 And the king, grieving, said that Daniel should be thrown into the lions' pit according to the decree which he had set up against him. Then the king was greatly grieved over Daniel, and he strove to deliver him out of the hands of the satraps until the setting of the sun, 16 and he was not able to deliver him from them. 17 And Darius the king cried out and said to Daniel, Your God, whom you serve continually three times a day, he will deliver you out of the hand of the lions; take courage until morning. 18 Then Daniel was thrown into the lions' pit, and a stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the pit, and the king sealed it with his own ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel might not be taken away by them, nor the king draw him up out of the pit. 19 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night fasting, and was grieving for Daniel. Then the God of Daniel, taking care of him, shut the mouths of the lions, and they did not trouble Daniel. 20 And king Darius rose early in the morning, and took the satraps with him, and went and stood at the mouth of the lions' pit. 21 Then the king called Daniel with a loud voice, with weeping, saying, Daniel, are you alive then, and has your God, whom you serve continually, saved you from the lions, and have they not harmed you? 22 Then Daniel answered with a loud voice and said, king, I am still alive, 23 and God has saved me from the lions, since righteousness was found in me before him; and before you also, king, neither ignorance nor sin was found in me. But you listened to men who lead kings astray, and you threw me into the lions' pit to destruction. 24 Then all the forces were gathered together, and they saw Daniel, how the lions had not troubled him. 25 Then those two men who had borne witness against Daniel, they and their wives and their children, were thrown to the lions; and the lions killed them and crushed their bones. 26 Then Darius wrote to all the nations and countries and tongues who dwell in all his land, saying, 27 Let all the men who are in my kingdom worship and serve the God of Daniel; for he is a God who endures and lives for generations of generations, for ever. 28 I, Darius, will worship and serve him all my days; for the idols made with hands cannot save, as the God of Daniel redeemed Daniel. 29 And king Darius was gathered to his race, and Daniel was set over the kingdom of Darius; and Cyrus the Persian received his kingdom.
1 In the first year of the reign of Belshazzar over the country of Babylonia, Daniel saw a vision by his head upon his bed. Then Daniel wrote the vision which he saw in chief points of words. 2 Upon my bed I was watching in my sleep by night, and look, the four winds of heaven fell upon the great sea. 3 And four beasts came up out of the sea, differing one from another. 4 The first was like a lioness, having wings as of an eagle. I watched until her wings were plucked, and she was lifted up from the earth, and was set upon human feet, and a human heart was given to her. 5 And look, after her another beast, having the likeness of a bear, and it stood upon one side, and three ribs were in its mouth; and thus it said, Arise, devour much flesh. 6 And after these things I watched another beast, like a leopard, and four wings were stretched out over it, and the beast had four heads, and a tongue was given to it. 7 And after these things I watched in the vision of the night a fourth beast, fearful, and its fearfulness surpassing in strength, having great iron teeth, eating and crushing, trampling around with its feet, behaving differently from all the beasts before it; and it had ten horns. 8 And many counsels were in its horns, and look, another single horn grew up in the midst of them, small among its horns, and three of the first horns were dried up by it; and look, eyes like human eyes were in this horn, and a mouth speaking great things, and it made war against the saints. 9 I watched until thrones were set, and one Ancient of days sat, having a garment like snow, and the hair of his head like pure white wool; the throne was like a flame of fire. 10 And a river of fire went forth before his face; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; and the court sat, and books were opened. 11 I watched then the sound of the great words which the horn spoke; and the beast was beaten to death, and its body perished, and it was given to be burned with fire. 12 And those around it he removed from their authority, and a time of life was given to them until a time and season. 13 I watched in the vision of the night, and look, upon the clouds of heaven one like a son of man was coming, and he was present as the Ancient of days, and those standing by were present with him. 14 And authority was given to him, and all the nations of the earth according to their kinds, and all glory serving him; and his authority is an everlasting authority, which shall never be taken away, and his kingdom, which shall never be destroyed. 15 And I Daniel was weary in these things in the vision of the night. 16 I approached one of those standing by, and sought the exact truth from him concerning all these things; and he answered and says to me, and made known to me the interpretation of the words. 17 These great beasts are four kingdoms, which shall perish from the earth. 18 And the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and shall possess the kingdom for ever and for ever and ever. 19 Then I wished to learn exactly concerning the fourth beast, which destroyed all things and was exceedingly fearful; and look, its teeth were of iron and its claws of brass, devouring all around and trampling with the feet; 20 and concerning its ten horns upon its head, and the one other that grew up, and three fell by it; and that horn had eyes and a mouth speaking great things, and its appearance surpassed the others. 21 And I observed that horn waging war against the saints and routing them, 22 until the Ancient of days came; and he gave judgment to the saints of the Most High, and the time was given, and the saints possessed the kingdom. 23 And it was said to me concerning the fourth beast, that it shall be a fourth kingdom on the earth, which shall differ from all the earth, and shall lay it waste and grind it to pieces. 24 And as for the ten horns of the kingdom, ten kings shall arise, and the other king shall arise after them, and he shall surpass the first in evils, and shall humble three kings. 25 And he shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and shall undertake to change times and law; and all things shall be delivered into his hands until a time and times and until half a time. 26 And the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his authority, and they shall plan to defile and to destroy until the end. 27 And the kingdom and the authority and their greatness and the dominion of all the kingdoms under heaven he gave to a holy people of the Most High, to reign over an everlasting kingdom; and all authorities shall be subjected to him and shall obey him. 28 Until the conclusion of the word I Daniel was held in great amazement, and my condition was changed in me, and I fixed the word in my heart.
1 In the third year of the reign of Belshazzar, a vision which I Daniel saw, after I had seen the first. 2 And I saw in the vision of my dream, while I was in Susa the city, which is in the country of Elymais, while I was still at the gate of Elam. 3 Looking up, I saw one great ram standing opposite the gate, and it had horns, and the one was higher than the other, and the higher was growing up. 4 And after these things I saw the ram butting toward the east and toward the north and toward the west and the south, and no beasts stood before him, and there was none to deliver out of his hands, and he did as he would, and was exalted. 5 And I was considering, and look, a he-goat of the goats came from the west over the face of the earth, and did not touch the earth; and the goat had a horn between its eyes. 6 And it came upon the ram that had the horns, which I saw standing at the gate, and ran at him in the fury of anger. 7 And I saw it advancing toward the ram, and it was enraged against him, and struck and broke his two horns; and there was no longer strength in the ram to stand against the goat; and it tore him down to the earth and crushed him, and there was none to deliver the ram from the goat. 8 And the he-goat of the goats grew exceedingly strong, and when it had grown strong its great horn was broken, and four other horns came up behind it toward the four winds of heaven. 9 And out of one of them grew up one strong horn, and it grew strong, and struck toward the south and toward the east and toward the north. 10 And it was exalted to the stars of heaven, and was dashed to the earth from the stars, and was trampled by them, 11 until the chief captain shall deliver the captivity; and because of him the mountains that were from of old were dashed down, and their place and sacrifice were taken away; and he set it down to the ground upon the earth, and it prospered, and it happened, and the sanctuary shall be made desolate. 12 And the sins came upon the sacrifice, and righteousness was cast to the ground; and it acted and prospered. 13 And I heard another holy one speaking, and the other said to Phelmuni who was speaking, How long shall the vision stand, and the sacrifice that was taken away, and the sin of desolation that was given, and the holy things be made desolate to be trampled? 14 And he said to him, Until evening and morning, two thousand three hundred days; and the sanctuary shall be cleansed. 15 And while I Daniel was looking at the vision, I sought to understand it, and look, there stood before me as the appearance of a man. 16 And I heard the voice of a man in the midst of the Ulai, and he called and said, Gabriel, make that man understand the vision. And the man cried out and said, The vision is for that command. 17 And he came and stood next to where I stood, and as he came I was troubled and fell upon my face; and he said to me, Understand, son of man, for this vision is yet for the hour of the time. 18 And as he spoke with me I fell asleep upon my face on the ground; and he touched me and raised me up upon the place. 19 And he said to me, Look, I declare to you what shall be at the end of the fierce anger to the sons of your people; for it still remains for the hours of the time of the end. 20 The ram which you saw, that had the horns, is the king of the Medes and Persians. 21 And the he-goat of the goats is the king of the Greeks; and the great horn that was between his eyes, this is the first king. 22 And as for the horns that were broken, and the four horns that came up behind it, four kings of his nation shall arise, not according to his strength. 23 And at the end of their kingdom, when their sins are fulfilled, there shall arise a king shameless in face, understanding riddles. 24 And his strength shall be established, and not by his own strength; and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and act, and shall destroy mighty men and a people of saints. 25 And against the saints is his purpose, and deceit shall prosper in his hands, and his heart shall be exalted, and by guile he shall destroy many, and he shall stand for the destruction of men, and he shall make a gathering of the hand, and shall repay. 26 The vision of evening and morning was found in truth; and now the vision is shut up, for it is yet for many days. 27 I Daniel was sick many days, and I arose and did the king's business again, and I was faint at the vision, and there was none who understood.
1 In the first year under Darius the son of Xerxes, of the Median race, who reigned over the kingdom of the Chaldeans, 2 in the first year of his reign I Daniel considered in the books the number of the years, when there was a decree to the land through Jeremiah the prophet, to raise up seventy years for the fulfillment of the reproach of Jerusalem. 3 And I set my face toward the Lord God, to find prayer and mercy, with fastings and sackcloth and ashes. 4 And I prayed to the Lord God and made confession and said, Look, Lord, you are the God, the great and the strong and the fearful, keeping the covenant and the mercy to those who love you and to those who keep your ordinances. 5 We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted impiously, and we have departed, and have transgressed your commandments and your judgments. 6 And we did not listen to your servants the prophets, the things which they spoke in your name to our kings and our mighty men and our fathers and to every nation upon the earth. 7 To you, Lord, belongs righteousness, and to us shame of face as at this day, to the men of Judah and to those dwelling in Jerusalem and to all the people of Israel, the nearest and the farther off, in all the countries into which you scattered them there, for the trespass by which they trespassed before you. 8 Master, to us belongs shame of face, and to our kings and mighty men and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you. 9 To the Lord belong righteousness and mercy, because we departed from you, 10 and we did not listen to the voice of the Lord our God, to follow your law which you gave before Moses and us through your servants the prophets. 11 And all Israel forsook your law, and they departed so as not to listen to your voice; and the curse came upon us, and the oath written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we sinned against him. 12 And he established for us his ordinances, as many as he spoke against us and against our judges, as many as you judged for us, to bring upon us great evils, such as have not happened under heaven, as happened in Jerusalem. 13 According to the things written in the covenant of Moses, all the evils came upon us; and we did not seek out the face of the Lord our God, to depart from our sins and to understand your righteousness, Lord. 14 And the Lord God kept watch over the evils and brought them upon us, for the Lord our God is righteous in all that he may do; and we did not listen to his voice. 15 And now, Master, Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with your high arm, and made yourself a name as at this day, we have sinned, we have been ignorant. 16 Master, according to your righteousness let your fury and your anger turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain; for in our sins and in the ignorances of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people, Lord, have become a reproach among all who are around us. 17 And now hear, Master, the prayer of your servant and my petitions, and let your face look upon your holy mountain that is desolate, for the sake of your servants, Master. 18 Incline your ear, Lord, and hear me; open your eyes and see our desolation and that of your city, upon which your name has been called; for not on account of our righteous deeds do we make our petition in our prayers before you, but because of your mercy. 19 Lord, show mercy; Lord, hear and act, and do not delay, for your own sake, Master, because your name was called upon your city Zion and upon your people Israel. 20 And while I was speaking, praying and confessing my sins and the sins of my people Israel, and making petition in prayers before the Lord my God, and for the holy mountain of our God, 21 and while I was still speaking in my prayer, look, the man whom I saw in my sleep at the beginning, Gabriel, borne swiftly, drew near to me at the hour of the evening sacrifice. 22 And he came and spoke with me and said, Daniel, I have now come forth to show you understanding. 23 At the beginning of your petition a command went forth from the Lord, and I have come to show you, for you are one shown mercy; and understand the command. 24 Seventy weeks have been decided upon your people and upon the city Zion, for sin to be finished and for unrighteousness to become scarce, and to blot out the unrighteousness, and to understand the vision, and for everlasting righteousness to be given, and for the vision to be finished, and to gladden a holy of holies. 25 And you shall know and understand and rejoice, and you shall find commands to answer, and you shall build Jerusalem a city for the Lord. 26 And after seven and seventy and sixty-two, an anointing shall be removed and shall not be; and a kingdom of nations shall destroy the city and the sanctuary along with the anointed one; and its end shall come with fierce anger, and until the time of the end it shall be warred against with war. 27 And the covenant shall prevail for many, and again it shall return and be rebuilt in breadth and length; and at the completion of times, and after seven and seventy times and sixty-two years, until the time of the end of war, the desolation also shall be taken away when the covenant prevails for many weeks; and at the end of the week the sacrifice and the drink offering shall be taken away, and upon the temple there shall be an abomination of desolations until the end, and an end shall be put upon the desolation.
1 In the first year of Cyrus king of the Persians, a command was shown to Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the vision and the command were true, and the strong multitude shall understand the command; and I understood it in a vision. 2 In those days I Daniel was mourning three weeks. 3 I ate no pleasant bread, and flesh and wine did not enter my mouth; I did not anoint myself with oil, until I had completed the three weeks of days. 4 And on the twenty-fourth day of the first month, I was on the bank of the great river, which is the Tigris. 5 And I lifted up my eyes and saw, and look, a man clothed in fine linen, and his waist wrapped with fine linen, and from his midst a light. 6 And his body was like Tarshish, and his face like the appearance of lightning, and his eyes like torches of fire, and his arms and his feet like flashing brass, and the voice of his speech like the sound of a tumult. 7 And I Daniel saw this great vision, and the men who were with me did not see this vision, and great fear fell upon them, and they ran away in haste. 8 And I was left alone and saw this great vision, and no strength was left in me; and look, a spirit turned upon me to destruction, and I did not prevail. 9 And I did not hear the voice of his speech; I had fallen upon my face upon the earth. 10 And look, he put forth a hand to me, and raised me upon my knees, upon the soles of my feet. 11 And he said to me, Daniel, you are a man shown mercy; understand the commands which I speak to you, and stand in your place, for I have now been sent to you. And when he had spoken this command with me, I stood trembling. 12 And he said to me, Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your face to understand and to be humbled before the Lord your God, your word was heard, and I came in at your word. 13 And the captain of the king of the Persians stood against me twenty-one days; and look, Michael, one of the first rulers, came to help me, and I left him there with the captain of the king of the Persians. 14 And he said to me, I have come to show you what shall happen to your people at the end of the days; for the vision is yet for days. 15 And when he spoke these commands with me, I set my face toward the earth and was silent. 16 And look, as the likeness of a man's hand touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and spoke, and said to the one standing before me, Lord, as a vision it turned upon my side, upon me, and there was no strength in me. 17 And how shall the servant be able to speak with his lord? And I was weak, and there is no strength in me, and no breath was left in me. 18 And he touched me again, as the appearance of a man, and strengthened me. 19 And he said to me, You are a man shown mercy; do not fear; be well, be courageous and be strong. And when he spoke with me, I was strong, and said, Let my lord speak, for he has strengthened me. 20 And he said to me, Do you know why I have come to you? And now I shall return to fight with the captain of the king of the Persians; and I was going out, and look, the captain of the Greeks was coming in. 21 And indeed I shall show you the first things in the record of truth; and there was no one helping me concerning these things but Michael the angel.
1 And in the first year of Cyrus the king he told me to be strong and to be courageous. 2 And now I have come to show you the truth. Look, three kings have stood up in Persia, and the fourth shall be enriched with great riches beyond all; and when he has grown strong in his riches, he shall rise up against every king of the Greeks. 3 And a mighty king shall arise, and shall rule with great dominion, and shall do as he pleases. 4 And when he has arisen, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven, not according to his might, nor according to his dominion with which he ruled; for his kingdom shall be removed, and he shall teach these things to others. 5 And he shall strengthen the kingdom of Egypt; and one of the mighty men shall prevail over him, and shall rule; his dominion shall be a great dominion. 6 And at the end of years he shall bring them, and the king of Egypt shall come into the kingdom of the north to make agreements, and he shall not prevail; for his arm shall not establish strength, and his arm shall grow numb, and that of those who go with him; and he remains for hours. 7 And a plant shall arise from his root by itself, and the king of the north shall come against his force in his strength, and shall cause confusion, and shall prevail. 8 And he shall overthrow their gods with their molten images, and their multitudes with their vessels of desire; they shall carry away the silver and the gold in captivity into Egypt; and there shall be a year for the king of the north. 9 And he shall enter the kingdom of Egypt for days, and shall return to his own land. 10 And his son also shall be provoked, and shall gather a gathering of a great multitude, and shall enter against it; sweeping along he shall pass through, and shall return, and shall be greatly provoked. 11 And the king of Egypt shall be angry and shall fight with the king of the north, and the gathering shall be delivered into his hands. 12 And he shall take the gathering, and his heart shall be exalted, and he shall trouble many, and he shall not fear. 13 And the king of the north shall return and shall gather from the city a gathering greater than the first, at the end of the time of a year, and he shall come into it against him with a great multitude and with many riches. 14 And in those times plans shall rise up against the king of Egypt, and he shall rebuild what has fallen of your nation, and shall rise up to establish the prophecy, and they shall stumble. 15 And the king of the north shall come, and shall turn his spears, and shall take the fortified city, and the arms of the king of Egypt shall stand with his mighty men, and he shall have no strength to withstand him. 16 And he who comes against him shall do according to his will, and there shall be none standing against him; and he shall stand in the land, and all things shall be accomplished in his hands. 17 And he shall set his face to come by force upon all his work, and he shall make agreements with him, and shall give him a daughter of man to destroy her; and he shall not be persuaded, and it shall not be. 18 And he shall set his face toward the sea and shall take many, and shall turn back the anger of their reproach with an oath according to his reproach. 19 He shall turn his face to strengthen his own land, and shall stumble and fall, and shall not be found. 20 And there shall arise out of his root a plant of a kingdom for a rising, a man striking the glory of a king; and in the last days he shall be broken, and not in anger nor in war. 21 And there shall arise in his place one easily despised, and the glory of a king shall not be given to him; and he shall come suddenly; a king shall prevail in his inheritance. 22 And the arms that were broken he shall break before his face. 23 And with the covenant and a people joined with him he shall act falsely, and against a strong nation with a very small nation. 24 Suddenly he shall lay waste a city, and shall do what his fathers did not, nor his fathers' fathers; he shall give them plunder and captured goods and riches, and he shall plot against the strong city, and his reasonings shall be in vain. 25 And his strength shall be roused, and his heart, against the king of Egypt with a great multitude; and the king of Egypt shall be provoked to war with an exceedingly strong multitude, and he shall not stand, for a plan shall be devised against him. 26 And his cares shall consume him, and shall turn him away, and he shall pass by and sweep away, and many wounded shall fall. 27 And two kings alone shall dine together, and shall eat at one table, and shall speak lies, and shall not prosper; for the end is yet for a time. 28 And he shall return to his land with many riches, and his heart shall be against the covenant of the holy one, and he shall act, and shall return to his land. 29 At the appointed time he shall also enter into Egypt, and it shall not be as the first and the last. 30 And Romans shall come and drive him out and threaten him; and he shall return and be angry against the covenant of the holy one, and shall act; and he shall return and plot against them, because they forsook the covenant of the holy one. 31 And arms from him shall stand, and they shall defile the sanctuary of fear, and shall remove the sacrifice, and shall set up an abomination of desolation. 32 And in sins of the covenant they shall defile with a hard people; and the people that knows these things shall prevail and act. 33 And those of the nation who understand shall instruct many, and they shall stumble by the sword, and shall grow old in it, and in captivity and in plunder of days they shall be stained. 34 And when they are broken, they shall gather a little strength, and many shall be gathered to them in the city, and many as in an inheritance. 35 And some of those who understand shall think to cleanse themselves, and to be chosen, and to be cleansed, until the time of the end; for the time is yet for hours. 36 And the king shall do according to his will, and shall be provoked to anger, and shall be exalted above every god, and against the God of gods he shall speak strange things, and shall prosper until the fierce anger is accomplished; for the end comes upon him. 37 And he shall have no regard for the gods of his fathers, and he shall have no regard for the desire of a woman, for he shall be exalted above all, and strong nations shall be subjected to him. 38 He shall move upon his place, and a god whom his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver and costly stone and with desirable things. 39 He shall act against cities, and shall come to a strong fortress with a foreign god, whom if he acknowledges he shall increase glory; and he shall rule over it for long, and shall divide land as a gift. 40 And at the hour of the end the king of Egypt shall butt horns with him, and the king of the north shall be enraged against him with chariots and with many horses and with many ships, and he shall enter into the land of Egypt. 41 And he shall come into my land, 42 and in the land of Egypt there shall be none in it escaping. 43 And he shall take hold of the place of the gold and the place of the silver and of all the desirable things of Egypt; and Libyans and Ethiopians shall be in his multitude. 44 And a report shall trouble him from the east and the north, and he shall go forth in strong fury, and with a sword to destroy and to kill many. 45 And he shall then pitch his tent between the seas and the mountain of the will of the holy one, and the hour of his end shall come, and there shall be none to help him.
1 And at that hour Michael the great angel shall pass by, who stands over the sons of your people; that day shall be a day of affliction such as has not been since they came to be until that day; and in that day all the people shall be exalted, whoever shall be found written in the book. 2 And many of those who sleep in the breadth of the earth shall rise, some to everlasting life, and others to reproach, and others to dispersion and everlasting shame. 3 And those who understand shall shine as the lights of heaven, and those who strengthen my words like the stars of heaven for ever and ever. 4 And you, Daniel, cover the commands and seal the book until the time of the end, until the many go mad and the earth is filled with unrighteousness. 5 And I Daniel saw, and look, two others stood, one on this side of the river and one on that side. 6 And I said to the one clothed in fine linen, who was above, When then is the end of the wonderful things of which you have spoken to me, and the cleansing of these things? 7 And I heard the one clothed in fine linen, who was above the water of the river, Until the time of the end; and he lifted up his right hand and his left to heaven, and swore by the God who lives for ever, that for a time and times and half a time is the end of the hands of the release of a holy people, and all these things shall be accomplished. 8 And I heard and did not understand at that time, and I said, Lord, what is the solution of this word, and of what are these parables? 9 And he said to me, Go away, Daniel, for the commands are covered and sealed until 10 many are tested and sanctified, and the sinners sin; and all the sinners shall not understand, and those who understand shall give heed. 11 From the time the continual sacrifice is removed and the abomination of desolation is made ready to be set up, one thousand two hundred and ninety days. 12 The person who endures and arrives at one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days is blessed. 13 And you, go, rest; for there are yet days and hours for the fulfillment of the end; and you shall rest and shall rise to your glory at the end of days.
