Column 2

1 [… for what I] am doing [with you is awesome.] 2 [Look, I am driving out before you] the [Amorites and the Canaanites] 3 [and the Hittites and the Girgashites] and the [Perizzites and the Hivites and] 4 [the Jebusites. Guard] yourself, lest you make a covenant [with the inhabitant of the land] 5 [into which you] are coming, lest they become a snare [in your midst. For] 6 their altars you shall tear down, and their pillars [you shall smash, and] 7 [their Asherahs] you shall cut down. And the carved images of [their gods you shall burn] 8 [in fire.] You shall not covet silver and gold, which [would ensnare you, for it is an abomination] 9 [to me. You shall not] take from it, and you shall not bring [an abomination into your house] 10 [and become] devoted to destruction like it. You shall utterly [detest it and utterly abhor it,] 11 [for] it is devoted to destruction. And you shall not bow down to [another] god, [for the LORD, Jealous] 12 [is his name,] he is a jealous God. Guard yourself, lest you make [a covenant with the inhabitant of the land,] 13 [and they prostitute themselves] after [their gods and] sacrifice to [their gods, and one invites you,] 14 [and you eat of their sacrifices, and you] take [of their daughters for your sons, and] 15 [their daughters prostitute themselves after their gods] and make [your sons prostitute themselves after]

Afterward [you shall make] 8 this [burnt offering] in the third part of the day, eternal statutes for your generations [in all your dwellings]. 9 You shall rejoice on this day; on it you shall do no work of [labor]. A solemn rest this day shall be 10 for you. And on the tenth of this month 11 is a day of atonement. And you shall afflict yourselves on it, for every person who does not 12 afflict himself on this very day shall be cut off from his people. And you shall offer on it a burnt offering 13 to the LORD: one bull, one ram, seven lambs a year old, one male 14 goat for a sin offering, besides the sin offering of atonement, and their grain offering and their drink offering 15 according to their ordinance for the bull, for the ram, for the lambs and for the goat. And for the sin offering of atonement you shall offer 16 two rams for a burnt offering. One the high priest shall offer for himself and for his father’s house.

And he] shall do with [its blood as he did with the blood of] 7 the bull that was his own, and with it he shall make atonement for all the people of the assembly. And its fat, and the grain offering 8 with its drink offering, he shall burn on the altar of burnt offering; and its flesh, its hide and its dung 9 they shall burn beside his bull. It is the sin offering of the assembly, and with it he shall make atonement for all the people of the assembly, 10 and they shall be forgiven. And he shall wash his hands and his feet of the blood of the sin offering and come to 11 the live goat. And he shall confess over its head all the iniquities of the sons of Israel together with 12 all their guilt for all their sins, and put them on the head of the goat, and send it away 13 to Azazel, to the wilderness, by the hand of a man made ready. And the goat shall carry all the iniquities

Once a year this day shall be a memorial for them. 6 And they shall do no work on it, for it shall be a sabbath of solemn rest [for them]. And any man 7 who does work on it, or who does not afflict himself on it, shall be cut off from the midst of 8 their people. A sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation, this day shall be for you, 9 and you shall consecrate it as a memorial in all your dwellings. And you shall do no 10 work. Everything within it shall be 6 pure, and everything that comes into it shall be pure: wine and oil and all food 7 and all drink shall be pure. No hide of a clean animal that they slaughter 8 within their cities shall they bring into it; for in their cities they shall use 9 them for their work, for all their needs, but into the city of my sanctuary they shall not bring them, 10 for their purity matches that of their flesh. And you shall not defile the city in which 11 I make my name and my sanctuary dwell. For in the hides of animals they slaughter 12 in the sanctuary, in those they shall bring their wine and their oil and all 13 their food to the city of my sanctuary. They shall not pollute my sanctuary with the hides of their 14 unfit sacrifices that they slaughter in their land. And you shall not treat a city 15 from among your cities as pure as my city; for as the purity of its flesh is, so are the hides made pure. If 16 you slaughter it in my sanctuary, it is pure for my sanctuary; and if you slaughter it in your cities, it is pure 17 for your cities. And all the pure things of the sanctuary you shall bring in hides from the sanctuary, and you shall not defile 18 my sanctuary and my city with the hides of your unfit offerings, for I dwell in its midst.

Every winged swarming thing that walks on] 2 [all fours is detestable to you.] 3 [These of the winged swarming things] you may eat: the locust after its kind, the bald locust after its kind, the cricket 4 after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind. These of the winged swarming things you may eat: those that walk on all fours that 5 have legs above their feet for leaping on the ground, and fly with their wings. No 6 carcass of bird or beast shall you eat; sell it to a foreigner. And nothing abominable shall you 7 eat, for you are a holy people to the LORD your God. You are sons 8 of the LORD your God; you shall not gash yourselves or shave a bald patch between your eyes 9 for the dead. You shall not put cuts in your flesh for a dead person, and you shall not write tattoo marks 10 on yourselves, for you are a holy people to the LORD your God. And you shall not defile 11 your land. And you shall not do as the nations do: in every place they 12 bury their dead, and they even bury inside their houses. Instead, you shall set apart places 13 within your land in which you shall bury your dead. For every four 14 cities you shall assign a place to bury in. And in each city you shall make places for those afflicted 15 with skin disease, with plague, and with scall, who may not enter your cities and defile them. And also for those with a discharge, 16 and for women during their menstrual impurity and after giving birth, so that they do not spread defilement among them 17 with their menstrual impurity. And the one with skin disease who has a chronic disease or scall, whom the priest declares unclean,

Everything in the house and everyone who comes into the house shall be unclean 7 seven days. And any food on which water is poured shall be unclean; any drink 8 shall be unclean. And earthenware vessels shall be unclean, and everything in them shall be unclean 9 for every pure man. And the open ones shall be unclean for every person of Israel, all the drink 10 that is in them. 11 And on the day that they take the dead out of it, they shall sweep the house clean of all 12 defilement of oil and wine and water moisture. Its floor and its walls and its doors they shall scrape, 13 and its locks and its doorposts and its thresholds and its lintels they shall wash with water. On the day that 14 the dead is taken out of it they shall purify the house and all its utensils: mill and mortar, 15 and all utensils of wood, iron and bronze, and all utensils that can be purified. 16 And clothing, sacks and hides shall be washed. And as for the people, everyone who was in the house 17 and everyone who came into the house shall bathe in water and wash his clothes on the first day. 18 And on the third day they shall sprinkle the water for impurity on them, and they shall bathe and wash their garments 19 and the utensils that are in the house. And on the seventh day 20 they shall sprinkle a second time and bathe and wash their clothes and their utensils, and by evening they shall be clean 21 from the dead, so that they may touch all their pure things. And as for the person who has not been defiled by

And any 5 man who, in the open field, touches the bone of a dead person, or one slain by the sword, 6 or a dead body, or the blood of a dead person, or a grave, shall purify himself according to the statute of this 7 ruling. And if he is not purified according to the ruling of this instruction, he is unclean; still 8 his uncleanness is in him. And anyone who touches him shall wash his clothes and bathe, and be clean 9 at evening. 10 And if a woman is pregnant and her child dies in her womb, all the days that 11 it is dead inside her she shall be unclean like a grave. Every house she enters shall be unclean, 12 with all its utensils, for seven days. And anyone who touches it is unclean until evening. And if 13 anyone enters the house with her, he shall be unclean seven days. He shall wash his clothes 14 and bathe in water on the first day. And on the third day he shall sprinkle and wash his clothes and bathe. 15 And on the seventh day he shall sprinkle a second time and wash his clothes and bathe, and when the sun sets 16 he shall be clean. And all the utensils, clothing, hides and all 17 goat-hair work, you shall treat them according to the ruling of this instruction. And every 18 earthenware vessel shall be broken, for they are unclean and can never be made clean again, 19 for all time. 20 Of all the swarming things of the earth, you shall treat as unclean the weasel, the mouse, the great lizard after its kind, the wall lizard, 21 the monitor, the sand lizard and the chameleon. Any man who touches them when they are dead

1 [… and all that comes out] of them [when they are dead … shall be] unclean 2 [to you. And you shall not] become unclean by them [… and anyone who touches them] when they are dead shall be unclean 3 until evening. He shall wash his clothes and bathe [in water, and when] the sun [has set,] he is clean. 4 And whoever carries any of their bones or their carcass, skin, flesh or claw shall wash 5 his clothes and bathe in water, and after the sun has set he shall be clean. And you shall warn 6 the sons of Israel against all the impurities. And they shall not defile themselves with those that 7 I am declaring to you on this mountain, and they shall not be defiled. For I, the LORD, dwell 8 among the sons of Israel. You shall make them holy, and they shall be holy. And they shall not make 9 themselves detestable through anything that I have set apart for them as unclean, and they shall be 10 holy. 11 Judges and officers you shall appoint for yourself in all your gates, and they shall judge the people 12 with righteous judgment. They shall not show partiality in judgment, nor take a bribe, nor 13 pervert judgment; for a bribe perverts judgment, twists the words of righteousness, blinds 14 the eyes of the wise, causes great guilt, and defiles the house through the guilt 15 of sin. Righteousness, righteousness you shall pursue, so that you may live and come in and take possession of 16 the land that I am giving you to possess for all time. And the man 17 who takes a bribe and perverts righteous judgment shall be put to death, and you shall not be afraid of him 18 to put him to death. 19 You shall not do in your land as the nations do: in every place they 20 sacrifice, and plant Asherah poles for themselves, and set up sacred pillars for themselves, 21 and set carved stones in place to bow down on, and build for themselves

Column 52

1 […] … You shall not plant [for yourself an Asherah, any tree, beside my altar] 2 [that you make] for yourself, and you shall not set up for yourself a pillar [that I hate, and a] stone 3 [with] carvings you shall not make for yourself anywhere in your land to bow down on it. And you shall not 4 sacrifice to me an ox or a sheep that has any serious defect, for they are detestable 5 to me. And you shall not sacrifice to me an ox or a sheep or a goat while they are pregnant, for they are detestable to me. 6 And an ox or a sheep, it and its young, you shall not slaughter on the same day, and you shall not kill a mother 7 together with her young. Every firstborn that is born in your herd and in your flock, 8 the males, you shall consecrate to me. You shall do no work with the firstborn of your ox, and you shall not shear the firstborn of 9 your flock. You shall eat it before me year by year in the place that I choose. And if it has 10 a defect, lame or blind or any serious defect, you shall not sacrifice it to me. In your gates 11 you shall eat it, the unclean and the clean among you alike, like the gazelle and the deer. Only you shall not eat the blood; 12 you shall pour it out on the ground like water and cover it with dust. And you shall not muzzle an ox while it threshes, 13 and you shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together. You shall not slaughter a clean ox or sheep or goat 14 in any of your gates within three days’ journey of my sanctuary; rather, within 15 my sanctuary you shall slaughter it, to make it a burnt offering or a sacrifice of well-being, and you shall eat 16 and rejoice before me in the place that I choose to set my name on. And every animal 17 that is clean but has a defect, you shall eat it within your gates, far from my sanctuary, 18 thirty ris all around. You shall not slaughter near my sanctuary, for it is unfit 19 meat. You shall not eat the meat of an ox or sheep or goat within my city, which I sanctify 20 to set my name within it, that has not come into my sanctuary; they shall sacrifice it there 21 and dash its blood against the base of the altar of burnt offering and burn its fat.

Column 53

0 [… when I enlarge your territory] 1 [as I promised you, and if the place that I have chosen to set my name there is too far from you,] 2 [and you say, “I will eat meat,” because] your soul craves to eat [meat, as much as your soul craves,] 3 you may eat meat, [and you shall slaughter] from your flock and from your herd, by the blessing that I give 4 you. And you shall eat within your gates, the clean and the unclean among you alike, like the gazelle 5 and the deer. Only be firm not to eat the blood; you shall pour it out on the ground like water and cover it 6 with dust, for the blood is the life. And you shall not eat the life with the meat, so that 7 it may go well with you and with your sons after you forever. And you shall do what is right and good 8 before me; I am the LORD your God. 9 Only your holy offerings and all your vows you shall take, and you shall come to the place where I make 10 my name dwell. And you shall sacrifice there before me as you consecrated or vowed with your mouth. 11 And when you make a vow, you shall not delay to fulfill it, for I will surely require it of you, 12 and it will be a sin in you. But if you refrain and do not vow, there will be no sin in you. 13 What passes your lips you shall keep, as you vowed a freewill offering with your mouth, to do 14 as you vowed. And if a man makes a vow to me or swears 15 an oath to bind himself with a pledge, he shall not break his word; according to all that comes out of his mouth 16 he shall do. And if a woman makes a vow to me or binds herself with a pledge 17 in her father’s house by an oath in her youth, and her father hears her vow or 18 the pledge by which she bound herself, and her father keeps silent toward her, then 19 all her vows shall stand, and every pledge by which she bound herself shall stand. But if 20 her father firmly forbids her on the day he hears it, none of her vows or pledges 21 by which she bound herself shall stand, and I will forgive her, because he forbade her.

Column 54

Every vow] or every oath of [binding to afflict the soul,] 3 her husband may confirm [it] and her husband may annul it on the day he hears it, and I will forgive her. 4 And every vow of a widow or a divorced woman, all that she has bound upon herself, 5 shall stand against her, according to all that went out of her mouth. All the words that 6 I command you today, you shall take care to do; you shall not add to them and not 7 take away from them. 8 If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of a dream, and he gives you a sign or 9 a wonder, and the sign or the wonder of which he spoke to you comes to pass, saying, 10 “Let us go and serve other gods whom you have not known,” you shall not 11 listen to the word of that prophet or to that dreamer of a dream, for 12 I am testing you to know whether you love the LORD, 13 the God of your fathers, with all your heart and with all your soul. After the LORD 14 your God you shall walk, and him you shall serve, and him you shall fear, and to his voice you shall listen, 15 and to him you shall cling. And that prophet or the dreamer of the dream shall be put to death, for he has spoken rebellion 16 against the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and I redeemed you 17 from the house of slaves, to lead you astray from the way in which I commanded you to walk. And you shall purge 18 the evil from your midst. 19 And if your brother, the son of your father or the son of your mother, entices you, or your son or your daughter, 20 or the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul, in secret, saying, 21 “Let us go and serve other gods whom you have not known,” you

Your hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and the hand of all the people afterward. And you shall stone him with stones and he shall die, because he sought to lead you astray from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slaves. And all Israel shall hear and fear, and they shall not again do] 1 [anything like this evil thing in your midst.] 2 If you hear about one [of your cities which] I am giving you to [dwell in,] 3 saying, “Men, sons of [Belial], have gone out from your midst and have led astray all the inhabitants of 4 their city, saying, ‘Let us go and serve gods whom you have not known,’” 5 then you shall ask and inquire and search out thoroughly. And if it is true, the matter established, 6 that this abomination has been done in Israel, you shall surely strike all the inhabitants of 7 that city with the edge of the sword. Devote it to destruction, and all that is in it, and 8 all its cattle you shall strike with the edge of the sword. And all its spoil you shall gather into the middle of 9 its square, and you shall burn with fire the city and all its spoil as a whole offering to the LORD 10 your God, and it shall be a mound forever; it shall not be built again. And there shall not cling 11 to your hand anything of what is devoted to destruction, so that I may turn from the heat of my anger, and I will give you 12 compassion and have compassion on you and multiply you, as I spoke to your fathers, 13 if you listen to my voice, to keep all my commandments which I command you 14 today, to do what is upright and good before the LORD your God. 15 If there is found in your midst, in one of your gates which 16 I am giving you, a man or a woman who does what is evil in my eyes, 17 transgressing my covenant, and goes and serves other gods and bows down to them, 18 or to the sun or to the moon or to all the host of heaven, and they tell you about it, 19 and you hear of this matter, then you shall inquire and search out thoroughly. And if 20 it is true, the matter established, that this abomination has been done in Israel, then you shall bring out 21 that man or that woman and stone them with stones.

And they shall declare it to you in truth 5 from the place which I choose to make my name dwell upon it, and you shall take care to do 6 according to all that they teach you; and according to the judgment which they speak to you 7 you shall act. You shall not turn aside from the instruction which they declare to you, to the right 8 or to the left. And the man who does not listen and acts presumptuously, not 9 heeding the priest who stands there to minister before me, or 10 the judge, that man shall die, and you shall purge the evil from Israel. And all 11 the people shall hear and fear, and they shall no longer act presumptuously in Israel. 12 When you come into the land which I am giving you, and you take possession of it and dwell 13 in it, and you say, “I will set a king over me like all the nations that are around me,” 14 you may surely set over you a king whom I choose. From among your brothers you shall set a king over you. 15 You shall not set over you a foreign man who is not your brother. Only he shall not 16 multiply horses for himself, and he shall not make the people return to Egypt for war in order to 17 multiply horses for himself, and silver and gold. And I have said to you, “You shall not 18 return again by this way.” And he shall not multiply wives for himself, so that they do not 19 turn his heart away from following me. And silver and gold he shall not multiply for himself greatly. 20 And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, they shall write 21 for him this Torah in a book, from the one that is before the priests.

Column 57

1 And this is the Torah [which they shall write for him from before] the priests. [They shall take] 2 on the day that they make [him] king [the count of the] sons of Israel from 3 twenty years old to sixty years old according to their standards, and he shall appoint 4 at their head commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and commanders of fifties 5 and commanders of tens in all their cities. And he shall choose for himself from them a thousand, a thousand 6 from each tribe, to be with him, twelve thousand men of war, 7 who shall not leave him alone, lest he be seized by the hand of the nations. And all 8 the chosen men whom he chooses shall be men of truth, fearers of God, 9 haters of unjust gain, and mighty warriors for battle. And they shall be with him always, 10 day and night, and they shall guard him from every matter of sin 11 and from a foreign nation, so that he is not seized by their hand. And twelve 12 princes of his people shall be with him, and from the priests twelve, and from the Levites 13 twelve, who shall sit together with him for judgment 14 and for instruction. And his heart shall not be lifted above them, and he shall not do anything 15 in any counsel apart from them. And he shall not take a wife from any of 16 the daughters of the nations, but from his father’s house he shall take for himself a wife, 17 from the clan of his father. And he shall not take another wife in addition to her, for 18 she alone shall be with him all the days of her life. And if she dies, he may take 19 another for himself from his father’s house, from his clan. And he shall not pervert judgment, 20 and he shall not take a bribe to pervert righteous judgment. And he shall not covet 21 a field or a vineyard or any wealth or a house or any desirable thing in Israel, and seize it.

Column 58

1 […] … […] 2 [them and …] their men. 3 And if the king hears about any nation or people [that] seeks to plunder anything that belongs 4 to Israel, he shall send to the commanders of thousands and to the commanders of hundreds stationed in the cities of 5 Israel. And they shall send with him a tenth of the people to go out with him to war against 6 their enemies, and they shall go out with him. And if a large army comes into the land of Israel, they shall send 7 with him a fifth of the men of war. And if a king with chariots and horses and a large army comes, 8 they shall send with him a third of the men of war, and the two other parts shall guard 9 their cities and their border, so that no raiding band enters the midst of their land. 10 And if the battle presses hard against him, they shall send to him half of the people, the men of 11 the army, and the other half of the people shall not be cut off from their cities. And if they defeat 12 their enemies and break them and strike them with the edge of the sword and carry off their spoil, they shall give 13 from it to the king his tenth, and to the priests one in a thousand, and to the Levites one in a hundred, 14 of everything; and they shall divide the rest in half between those who fought the battle and their brothers 15 whom they left in their cities. And if he goes out to war against 16 his enemies, a fifth of the people shall go out with him, the men of war, all the mighty men of 17 valor, and they shall keep themselves from every unclean thing and from all indecency and from all iniquity and guilt. 18 And he shall not go out until he comes before the high priest, and he shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim 19 and the Thummim. At his word he shall go out and at his word he shall come in, he and all the sons of Israel who are 20 with him. He shall not go out by the counsel of his own heart until he has inquired by the judgment of the Urim 21 and the Thummim. And he shall prosper in all his ways when he goes out according to the judgment which

And there they shall serve gods, the work of human hands, wood and stone, silver 4 and gold. And in all this their cities shall become a desolation and a hissing and a ruin, and 5 their enemies shall be appalled at them. And they, in the lands of their enemies, shall groan 6 and cry out because of a heavy yoke. And they shall call, but I will not hear; and they shall cry out, but I will not answer 7 them, because of the evil of their deeds. And I will hide my face from them, and they shall become food 8 and plunder and spoil, and there shall be no one to save them, because of their wickedness, for they broke my covenant 9 and their soul loathed my Torah, until they incur every guilt. Afterward they shall return 10 to me with all their heart and with all their soul, according to all the words of this Torah. 11 And I will save them from the hand of their enemies and redeem them from the hand of those who hate them, and I will bring them 12 to the land of their fathers, and I will redeem them and multiply them and rejoice over them, 13 and I will be their God and they shall be my people. And the king whose 14 heart and eyes turn faithlessly from my commandments shall never have one of his line found sitting on the throne of 15 his fathers, for I will cut off his seed forever from ruling again over Israel. 16 But if he walks in my statutes and keeps my commandments and does 17 what is upright and good before me, there shall not be cut off from him a man of his sons sitting on the throne of the kingdom of 18 Israel forever. And I will be with him and save him from the hand of those who hate him and from the hand of 19 those who seek his life to take it. And I will give all his enemies before him, and he shall rule over them 20 according to his will, and they shall not rule over him. And I will set him above and not below, the head 21 and not the tail. And he shall prolong his days greatly over his kingdom, he and his sons after him.

1 [And they shall eat in the most holy place …] … […] … 2 and all their wave offerings, and every firstborn male [of their cattle], and all […] 3 of their cattle, and all their holy gifts which they consecrate to me, with every holy gift of 4 their praise offerings; and the levy of their contribution of birds, of beasts and of fish, one in a thousand 5 of what they catch; and all that they devote; and the levy of the spoil and the plunder. 6 And to the Levites, the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil which 7 they have consecrated to me first; and the shoulder from those who offer the sacrifice; and the levy from 8 the spoil and from the plunder and from the game, of birds, of beasts and of fish, one in a hundred; 9 and of the young pigeons; and the tithe of the honey, one in fifty. And to the priests 10 one in a hundred of the young pigeons, for I have chosen them from all your tribes 11 to stand before me and to minister and to bless in my name, he and all his sons, all the days. 12 And if the Levite comes from one of your gates, from anywhere in Israel, where 13 he sojourns, with all the desire of his soul to the place which I choose to make 14 my name dwell, he shall minister like all his brothers the Levites who stand there before me. Portion like portion 15 they shall eat, besides what is sold from the fathers’ estates. 16 When you come into the land which I am giving you, you shall not learn to do 17 according to the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you one who makes his son or his daughter pass 18 through fire, a diviner of divinations, or a soothsayer or an augur or a sorcerer, a charmer, one who consults a ghost 19 or familiar spirits, or one who seeks out the dead. For they are an abomination before me, all who do 20 these things, and because of these abominations I am driving them out before you. 21 You shall be blameless with the LORD your God, for these nations which

I will raise up for them a prophet from among their brothers like him, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And the man who does not listen to my words which the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account. But the prophet who acts presumptuously] 1 to speak [a word] in my name which I did not command him to speak, or who [speaks in the name of] other gods, 2 that prophet shall be put to death. And if you say in your heart, “How shall we know the word 3 which the LORD has not spoken?” When the prophet speaks in the name of the LORD and the word does not happen 4 and does not come about, that is the word which I have not spoken; the prophet spoke it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid 5 of him. 6 A single witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity or for any sin that he commits. On the testimony of two 7 witnesses or on the testimony of three witnesses a matter shall stand. If a malicious witness rises up against a man to accuse 8 him of wrongdoing, then the two men who have the dispute shall stand before me and before the priests and the Levites and before 9 the judges who are in office in those days. And the judges shall investigate, and if the witness is a false witness who has testified falsely 10 against his brother, you shall do to him as he planned to do to his brother, and you shall remove the evil from your midst. 11 And the rest shall hear and be afraid, and they shall never again do a thing like this in your midst. Your eye 12 shall not pity him: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. When 13 you go out to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army larger than yours, you shall not be afraid 14 of them, for I am with you, who brought you up from the land of Egypt. And when you come near to battle, 15 the priest shall step forward and speak to the people and say to them, “Hear, Israel, you are drawing near.”

And the judges shall go on] 3 to speak to the people and say, “Who is the man who is afraid and faint of heart? He shall go back to 4 his house, lest he make the heart of his brothers melt like his own heart.” And when the judges have finished 5 speaking to the people, they shall appoint commanders of the armies at the head of the people. When 6 you approach a city to fight against it, you shall offer it terms of peace. And if 7 it answers you with peace and opens its gates to you, then all the people who are found in it shall become 8 forced laborers for you and shall serve you. But if it does not make peace with you and wages war against you, 9 you shall lay siege to it. And I will give it into your hand, and you shall put all its males to the sword. But 10 the women and the children and the livestock and everything that is in the city, all its spoil, you shall take as plunder 11 for yourself, and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies which I give you. So you shall do 12 to the cities that are very far from you, which are not among the cities of these 13 nations. But from the cities of the peoples which I give you as an inheritance you shall leave alive 14 nothing that breathes, for you shall devote them to destruction: the Hittite and the Amorite and the Canaanite, 15 the Hivite and the Jebusite and the Girgashite and the Perizzite, as I have commanded you, so that 16 they do not teach you to do all the abominations that they have done for their gods.

1 been worked, which [has not pulled in a yoke. And the elders of] that city [shall bring] the 2 heifer down to a wadi with a constant stream, which is not sown or tilled, and there they shall break the neck of the heifer. 3 And the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come forward, for I have chosen them to serve before me and to bless in my name, 4 and by their word every dispute and every case of injury shall be decided. And all the elders of that city nearest to the slain man 5 shall wash their hands over the head of the heifer whose neck was broken in the wadi, and they shall declare, “Our hands 6 did not shed this blood, and our eyes did not see it. Grant atonement for your people Israel whom you have redeemed, 7 LORD, and do not lay innocent blood in the midst of your people Israel.” And the blood shall be atoned for them. And you shall remove 8 the innocent blood from Israel, and you shall do what is right and good before the LORD your God. 10 When you go out to war against your enemies and I give them into your hand and you take them captive, 11 and among the captives you see a beautiful woman and desire her and take her for yourself as a wife, 12 you shall bring her into your house, and you shall shave her head and cut her nails, and you shall remove 13 the clothing of her captivity from her. And she shall remain in your house and mourn her father and her mother for a full 14 month. After that you may go in to her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife. But she shall not touch your pure things until 15 seven years have passed, and she shall not eat of the peace offering until seven years have passed; after that she may eat.

Column 64

1 [the first sign of his strength; the right of the firstborn belongs to him.] 2 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father or his mother, 3 and they discipline him and he will not listen to them, his father and his mother shall seize him and bring him out to 4 the elders of his city and to the gate … of his place. And they shall say to the elders of his city, “This son of ours is stubborn 5 and rebellious and does not obey us; he is a glutton and a drunkard.” And all the men of his city shall stone him 6 and he shall die, and you shall remove the evil from your midst, and all the children of Israel shall hear and be afraid. If 7 a man informs against his people and hands his people over to a foreign nation and does harm to his people, 8 you shall hang him on the tree, and he shall die. On the testimony of two witnesses and on the testimony of three witnesses 9 he shall be put to death, and they shall hang him on the tree. If a man has committed an offense that carries the death penalty and flees to 10 the midst of the nations and curses his people and the children of Israel, you shall hang him also on the tree, 11 and he shall die. And their bodies shall not remain on the tree overnight, but you shall bury them on that same day, for 12 those hanged on the tree are cursed by God and by men, and you shall not make unclean the land which I 13 give you as an inheritance. You shall not see the ox of your brother or his sheep or his donkey 14 straying and turn away from them; you shall bring them back to your brother. And if your brother does not live near 15 you and you do not know him, you shall take it into your house, and it shall stay with you until he comes looking for it.

Column 65

1 [You shall make tassels for yourself on the four corners of the garment with which you cover yourself.] 2 If you come upon the [nest] of a bird by the road, in any tree or on the ground, 3 with chicks or eggs, and the mother sitting on the chicks or on the eggs, 4 you shall not take the mother along with the young. You shall let the mother go, and the young 5 you may take for yourself, so that it may go well with you and you may live long. When you build a new house, 6 you shall make a railing for its roof, so that you do not bring bloodguilt on your house if someone falls 7 from it. If a man marries a wife and goes in to her and then dislikes her and makes shameful accusations against her 8 and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, and when I came near 9 her I did not find in her the evidence of virginity,” then the father of the young woman or her mother shall take and bring out 10 the evidence of the young woman’s virginity to the elders at the gate. And the father of the young woman shall say 11 to the elders, “I gave my daughter to this man as a wife, and now he dislikes her, and he has made 12 shameful accusations against her, saying, ‘I did not find in your daughter the evidence of virginity.’ But here is the evidence of the virginity of 13 my daughter.” And they shall spread out the cloth before the elders of that city. And the elders of that city shall take 14 that man and discipline him, and they shall fine him a hundred pieces of silver 15 and give them to the father of the young woman, because he gave a bad name to a virgin of Israel. And not

Column 66

1 [they shall bring the two of them out to the gate of] that city […] 2 and stone them, and they shall be put to death: the young woman because she did not cry out 3 in the city, and the man because he violated the wife of his neighbor. And you shall remove 4 the evil from your midst. But if the man found the woman in the open country, in a place distant and hidden 5 from the city, and seized her and lay with her, then only the man who lay with her shall be put to death, 6 and you shall do nothing to the young woman; the young woman has committed no offense that carries death. For just as when 7 a man rises against his neighbor and murders him, so is this case. For he found her in the open country; she cried out, 8 the betrothed young woman, and there was no one to rescue her. If a man seduces a young woman 9 who is a virgin, who is not betrothed, and she is permitted to him by the statute, and he lies with her 10 and is found out, then the man who lay with her shall give the father of the young woman fifty pieces of silver, and to him 11 she shall be a wife. Because he violated her, he may not send her away as long as he lives. A man shall not take 12 the wife of his father, and he shall not uncover the skirt of his father. A man shall not take the wife of 13 his brother, and he shall not uncover the skirt of his brother, the son of his father or the son of his mother, for this is impurity. 14 A man shall not take his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother; it is an abomination. A man shall not 15 take the sister of his father or the sister of his mother, for it is depravity. A man shall not 16 take 17 the daughter of his brother or the daughter of his sister, for it is an abomination. A man shall not take
