Summary
Date: 1st Century B.C.E.
The Septuagint translation of Job is shorter than the Masoretic text by 389 verses, though there are interesting midrashic additions at the end. Debates continue as to whether the translator used a shorter Hebrew version, such as is now attested at Qumran, or whether he abridged the work himself to make it more palatable to a cultured audience, perhaps non-Jewish as well as Jewish, and to tone down some of Job's more shocking outbursts.
