Irenaeus wrote Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching as a letter to a friend in order to establish him in Christian faith. His intent was to summarize the preaching and teaching he had inherited. Though presented in the form of a letter, it shows signs of a planned composition that was intended for the general public, as well.
