Ambrose
c. 339 – 397 C.E.
St. Ambrose of Milan (c. 339-397), Doctor of the Church, was born of noble Christian parents at Trier, and his father, who was Praetorian Prefect for all Gaul, dying at Trier, Ambrose and the two elder children were brought to Rome by their mother. The youngest was destined for a political career and his talents marked him out for rapid advancement. In 374 he was governor of Northern Italy, residing in Milan and still a catechumen.
