There are a number of differences in the content and order of some chapters in the Septuagint translation of Ezekiel. The translator of the Minor Prophets may have had a hand in parts of Ezekiel too, though criteria for identifying different translators and for grouping translations can be difficult to determine.

1And this happened in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day of the month: I was in the middle of the captives at the Chebar River, and the heavens opened, and I saw a vision of God. 2 On the fifth day of the month; this was the fifth year of the captivity of King Jehoiakim.aAnd the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel son of Buzi, the priest in the land of the Chaldeans, at the Chebar River. 3 And the hand of the Lord came upon me. 4 And I looked, and look! A driving spiritb was coming from the north, and a great cloud was in it, and splendor was around it, and flashing fire as with lightning, and in the middle of it was something like the appearance of amber in the middle of the fire and splendor within it. 5 And in the middle there was something like the likeness of four living beings, and this was the appearance of them: there was a likeness of a human upon them. 6 And each one had four faces, and each one had four wings; 7 and their legs were straight, and their feet feathered, and sparks were like flashing bronze, and their wings were light in weight.[1] 8 And underneath their wings on their four parts there was a hand of a human, and their four faces 9 did not turn about when they walked. Each one went before their face. 10 And the likeness of their faces was a face of a human and a face of a lion on the right of the four, and a face of a calf on the left of the four, and a face of an eagle to the four. 11 And their wings were stretched out above the four; each had two wings touching one another, and two above were covering their body. 12 And each was going according to its face; wherever the spirit was going, they would go, and they did not turn. 13 And in the middle of the living beings was an appearance like burning charcoal fire, like the appearance of gathered torches between the living beings, and the splendor of the fire and lightning was going forth out of the fire. 15 And I looked, and look! One wheel was upon the earth, holding the four living beings, 16 and the appearance of the wheel was like the appearance of Tarshish, and the four had one likeness. And their work was just as if a wheel was in a wheel. 17 They were going upon their four parts; they were not turning while they were going, 18 and their backs were not turning, and they had height. And I saw them, and their backs were full eyes all around the four. 19 And when the living beings went, the wheels holding them would go, and when the living beings lifted off from the earth, the wheels were lifted off. 20 Wherever the cloud was, there was the spirit to go; the wheels would go and be lifted off with them, because the spirit of life was in the wheels. 21 When they went, they would go, and when they stood, they would stand. And when these lifted off from the earth, they were lifted off along with them, because the spirit of life was in the wheels. 22 And a likeness above their head of the living beings was like a firmament, like the appearance of crystal stretched out above their wings. 23 And their wings were stretched out below the firmament, flapping one to another, two to each, covering their bodies.[2] 24 And I kept hearing the sound of their wings as they went, like a sound of much water, and when they stood, their wings would stop. 25 And look! There was a voice from above the firmament that was above their head. 26 There was a likeness of a chair upon it, and above the likeness of the chair was a likeness as the appearance of a human from above. 27 And I saw what looked like an appearance of amber from the vision of the loins and up, and from the vision of the loins and down I saw what looked like firea and its splendor around about.

2As the appearance of a bow when it is in the cloud on rainy days, such was the standing of the light from all around. 2 This was the vision of the likeness of the Lord’s glory. And I saw, and fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking. And he said to me, “Son of man,b stand upon your feet and I will speak to you.” 2 And the spirit came upon me and took me up and lifted me up and made me stand on my feet, and I heard him speaking to me. 3 And he said to me, “Son of man, I am dispatching you to the house of Israel who provoke me, they and their fathers who have provoked me up to the present day. 4 And you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says! 5 whether they hear or are terrified, because it is a rebellious house, and they will know that you are a prophet in their midst. 6 And you, son of man, do not be frightened by them or confounded by reason of their face, because they will incite and gather against you, and you dwell in the middle of scorpions; do not be frightened by their words or be confounded by their face, because it is a rebellious house. 7 And you shall tell them my words, whether they hear or are terrified, because it is a rebellious house. 8 And you, son of man, listen to the one speaking to you. Do not become rebellious just like the rebellious house. Open your mouth and eat what I give to you.” 9 And I looked, and look, a hand was stretched out toward, me and in it was the roll of a document. 10 And it unrolled it before me, and in it was written things on the front and things on the back, and in it had been written a complaint and a dirge and a woe.

3And he said to me, “Son of man, eat this roll and go and speak to the sons of Israel.” 2 And he opened my mouth and he fed me the roll. 3 And he said to me, “Son of man, your mouth shall eat and your belly shall be filled by this roll, which has been given to you.” And I ate it, and it became as sweet honey in my mouth. 4 And he said to me, “Son of man, go and enter the house of Israel and speak my words to them, 5 because you are dispatched not to a heavy-tongued people but to the house of Israel, 6 and not to many peoples speaking a foreign accent or using a foreign tongue nor being harsh in tongue, whose words you would hear. And if I had dispatched you to such people, these people may have listened to you. 7 But the house of Israel will not want to listen to you because they are unwilling to listen to me, because all the house of Israel is contentious and stubborn. 8 And look! I have made your face strong against their faces, and I will make your quarrel prevail against their quarrel, 9 and it will always be a strong rock. Do not be frightened by them or be terrified by their face, because it is a rebellious house.” 10 And he said to me, “Son of man, take into your heart all the words that I have spoken with you, and listen with your ears. 11 And go, go in to the captives, to the sons of your people, and you shall speak to them and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says,’ whether they should hear, whether they relent.” 12 And the spirit took me up, and I heard something behind me, and I heard a sound of a great earthquake: “Blessed is the glory of the Lord from his place!” 13 And I sawa a sound of the wings of the living beings flapping one to the other, and the sound of the wheels close next to them, and the sound of the earthquake. 14 And the spirit lifted me up and took me up, and I was brought in a rushing of my spirit, and the mighty hand of the Lord was upon me. 15 And I went in midair to the captives, and I went around those dwelling by the River Chebar, those who were there, and I sat there seven days, living in the middle of them. 16 And after seven days, the word of the Lord came to me saying, 17 “Son of man, I have granted you to be a watchman to the house of Israel, and you will hear an oracle from my mouth, and you shall threaten them for me. 18 When I say to the lawless person: ‘By death you shall be put to death,’ and you did not command that person or speak in order to command the lawless one to return from his ways, for him to live; that lawless one will die for his wrongdoing, and I will seek his blood from your hand. 19 But if you command the lawless person and he does not return from his lawlessness and way, the lawless person will die for his wrongdoing and you will rescue your soul. 20 And when a righteous person returns from his righteousness and commits a transgression, then I will place torment before his face. He will die because you did not warn him, and he will die in his sins, because his righteous acts will not be remembered. And I will seek his blood from your hand. 21 But you, if you warn the righteous person not to sin and he does not sin, the righteous person will live with life, because you warned him. And you will rescue your own soul.” 22 And the hand of the Lord came upon me, and he said to me, “Get up and go out into the plain, and there it will be spoken to you.” 23 And I got up and went out into the plain, and look! There the glory of the Lord stood, just like the vision, and just like the glory that I saw by the River Chebar, and I fall upon my face. 24 And the spirit came upon me and set me on my feet and spoke to me and said to me, “Enter, and be shut up in the middle of your house. 25 And you, son of man, look! Bonds have been placed upon you, and they will bind you with them, and you shall certainly not go out from the middle of them. 26 And I will bind your tongue, and you will become deaf, and you will not be a rebuker to them, because it is a rebellious house. 27 And when I speak to you, I will open your mouth, and you shall say to them: ‘This is what the Lord says: “Let one who hears, hear, and let the one who resists, resist, because it is a rebellious house.”’”

4“And you, son of man, take yourself a brick, and you shall set it in front of your face and draw the city of Jerusalem on it, 2 and place a siege against it and build a rampart against it, and throw a stockade around against it, and place an encampment against it, and arrange the war-engines all around. 3 And you, take yourself an iron frying pan, and you shall place it as an iron wall between you and between the city, and prepare your face against it, and it shall serve as a siege, and you shall besiege it. This is a sign to the sons of Israel. Dung-baked Bread 4 “And you shall sleep upon your left side and place the injustices of the house of Israel upon it, according to the number of the days: a hundred and fifty that you will sleep upon it and receive their injustices. 5 And I have given you their two injustices for a number of days: a hundred and ninety days, and you shall receive the injustices of the house of Israel. 6 And you shall complete these things, and sleep upon your right side, and receive the injustices of the house of Judah forty days; I have placed on you a day for a year. 7 And you shall prepare your face for the seige of Jerusalem and strengthen your arm, and prophesy against it. 8 And look, I have placed bonds on you, and you must not turn from your one side onto your other side until the days of your siege are completed. 9 And you, take yourself some wheat and barley and beans and lentils and millet and rice-wheat, and throw these into one clay bowl and make these into loaves for yourself, and eat these for a hundred and ninety days, according to the number of days that you lie upon your side. 10 And you shall eat your food by weight: twenty shekels a day; from time to time you shall eat them. 11 And you shall drink water by measure: a sixth of a hin; from time to time you shall drink. 12 And you shall eat them as a barley loaf, you shall bake them in human dung before their eyes, 13 and say, ‘This is what the Lord God of Israel says: “In this way the sons of Israel will eat impure things among the nations.”’” 14 And I said, “Certainly not, O Lord God of Israel! If my soul has not been defiled by impurity, and since my birth until now I have not eaten anything torn by wild beasts or the carcass of an animal, and no rancid flesh has entered into my mouth!” 15 And he said to me, “Look! I have given you ox dung instead of human dung, and you shall make your loaves on them.” 16 And he said to me, “Son of man, look; I am breaking the support of bread in Jerusalem, and they will eat bread by weight and in want, and drink water by measure and in ruin, 17 that there might be need of bread and of water. And a person and his brother will be ruined, and they will waste away in their injustices.”

5“And you, son of man, take for yourself a sword sharper than a barber’s razor; you shall acquire it for yourself, and bring it on your head and on your beard, and take a set of scales, and separate them. 2 A fourth of it you shall burn in the fire in the middle of the city, according to the fulfillment of the days of the siege, and a fourth of it you shall take and burn it in the middle of it, and a fourth of it you shall cut in pieces with a sword around it, and a fourth of it shall scatter abroad to the wind; and I will unsheath a sword after them. 3 And you shall take some of it, few in number, and gather it in your garment. 4 And you shall take some of these again and throw them into the middle of the fire and burn them with fire. Fire will come out from it. And you shall say to the whole house of Israel: 5 a‘This is what the Lord says: “This is Jerusalem. I have put her and the territories around her in the middle of the nations. 6 And you shall declare my duties to the lawless one from the nations, and my statutes to the lawless one from those territories surrounding her, because they spurned my duties, and they did not walk in my statutes.” 7 Because of this, this is what the Lord says: “Because your model from the nations surrounding you, you did not walk in my duties and you did not do my customs.” But you have not even done according to the duties of the surrounding nations. 8 Because of this, this is what the Lord says: “Look, I am against you and in your midst I shall make a judgment before the nations. 9 And I shall do things among you which I have not done and things which I will not do anything like them again, according to all your abominations. 10 Because of this, fathers will eat their children in the middle of you, and children will eat their fathers. I will make a judgment among you, and I will scatter all who remain of you into every wind. 11 Because of this, as I live!” says the Lord, “if because you defiled my sacred things by all your abominations, and I shall spurn you; my eye will not spare, and I will show no mercy. 12 A fourth of you will be consumed by death, and a fourth of you will be killed by famine in the middle of you, and I will scatter a fourth of you into every wind, and a fourth of you will fall by the sword all around you, and I will unsheath a sword after them. 13 And my anger and my wrath will be accomplished against them, and you will acknowledge that I, the Lord, have spoken in my zeal, when I have accomplished my anger against them. 14 And I will make you deserted, and your daughters surrounding you, before all those who travel through. 15 And you will be mourned and wretched among the nations who surround you when I make a judgment for you in the vengence of my anger. I, the Lord, have spoken. 16 And when I have dispatched the javelins of famine against them, they also will become an extinction, and I will crush the supply of your bread. 17 And I will dispatch famine and grievous wild beasts against you, and I will take vengeance on you, and death and blood will pass through against you, and I will bring a sword against you all around. I, the Lord, have spoken.”’”

6And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against the mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them, 3 and you shall say, ‘Mountains of Israel, listen to the word of the Lord. This is what the Lord says to the mountains and hills and ravines and stream beds: “Look, I am bringing a sword against you, and your high places will be utterly destroyed. 4 And your altars and your shrines will be broken to pieces, and I will throw down your wounded before your idols, 5 and I will scatter your bones around your altars. 6 In every dwelling place of yours the cities will be abandoned and the high places will be removed, that your altars might be destroyed and your idols will be broken to pieces and your shrines might be wiped out; 7 and wounded men will fall in the middle of you, and you will acknowledge that I am the Lord. 8 When those of you who are rescued from the sword among the nations, and when you are scattered among the territories,[3] 9 and those who are rescued among the nations where they were taken prisoner, they will remember me. I have sworn against their heart that goes whoring away from me and against their eyes that prostitute themselves after their practices, and they will strike their faces for all their abominations, 10 and they will acknowledge that I, the Lord, have spoken.”’” 11 This is what the Lord says: “Clap your hands and stamp your feet and say, ‘Well done! Well done against all the abominations of the house of Israel. They will fall by the sword and death and famine. 12 The near will fall by the sword and the far will die by death, and the one surrounded will be killed by famine, and I will accomplish my wrath against them. 13 And you will know that I am the Lord, when your wounded are in the middle of your idols, surrounding your altars on every high hill and under every shady tree where they gave a scent of appeasement to all their idols. 14 And I will stretch out my hand against them and make the land into a desolation and into a ruin, from the desert of Riblah, from every dwelling, and you will acknowledge that I am the Lord.”

7And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Also you, son of man, say, ‘This is what the Lord says to the land of Israel: “An end has come! The end has come upon the four edges of the land! 3 aThe end has come 4 upon you who dwells in the land. The time has come; the day has come near without noises or birthpangs. 5 Now that it is close at hand, I will pour out my wrath against you, and I will accomplish my anger on you, and I will judge you by your ways, and I will repay all your abominations to you. 6 My eye will have no pity, and I will show no mercy, because I will repay your ways to you. And your abominations will be in the middle of you and you will acknowledge that I, the Lord, am the one who beats down. 7 bNow the end is coming to you and I will send it upon you and avenge you for your ways and repay all your abominations upon you. 8 My eye will have no pity, and I will show no mercy, because I will repay your way upon you, and your abominations will be in the middle of you, and you will acknowledge that I am the Lord.”’” 9 “‘For this is what the Lord says: 10 “Look! The end has come! Look! The day of the Lord. Even if the rod has blossomed, insolence has risen up. 11 And a staff of lawlessness will crush, and without noise or haste. 12 The time has come. Look! The day! Let the buyer not rejoice, and the seller not wail, 13 because the buyer will no longer return to the seller, and a person in an eye of his life will not lay hold.”’” 14 ‘“Blow the war trumpet, and judge everything! 15 The battle is with sword from without, and famine and death from within. He who is in the plain will die by the sword, and famine and death will kill those who are in the city. 16 And those of them who escape will be rescued, and they will be on the mountains. And I will kill all people, each for his injustices. 17 All hands will be weakened, and all thighs will be defiled by moisture. 18 And they will gird themselves with sackcloth, and shock will cover them, and upon every face shame will be upon them, and baldness upon every head. 19 Their silver will be thrown in the streets and their gold will be despised. Their souls will certainly not be fulfilled, and their bellies will certainly not be filled, because the torment of their injustices has come. 20 They made choice things of ornamentation, for arrogance’s sake, and they made images of their abominations from them. Because of this I have granted them to be uncleanness for them. 21 And I will give these things into the hands of foreigners, who will tear these things to pieces, and to the destroyers of the earth for spoils, and they will profane them. 22 And I will turn my face away from them, and they will defile my supervision and enter into things unguardedly and profane them. 23 And they will make disorder, because the land is full of peoples, and the city full of lawlessness. 24 And I will turn back the pride of their strength, and their holy things will be defiled. 25 Appeasement will come, and one will seek peace, and there shall be none. 26 Woe will be upon woe and news will be upon news, and they will seek a vision from a prophet, but the law will perish from priest and a plan from elders. 27 The ruler will wear destruction, and the hands of the people of the land will be enfeebled. I will do to them according to their ways, and I will punish them by their judgments, and they will know that I am the Lord.”’”

8And this happened in the sixth year in the fifth month on the fifth day of the month: I was seated in the house, and the elders of Judah were before me, and the hand of the Lord came upon me. 2 And I looked, and look! A likeness of a man. There was fire from his loins and below, and from his loins above it was like the appearance of amber. 3 And a likeness of a hand stretched out and took me up by my head, and a spirita took me up me between the earth and the heavens, and it carried me into Jerusalem in a vision of God, onto the doorway of the gates looking into the north, where there was the stone of the acquirer. 4 And look, the glory of the Lord God of Israel was there, just like the vision I saw in the plain. 5 And he said to me, “Son of man, lift your eyes up to the north!” And I lifted my eyes up to the north. And look; from the north upon the gate toward the east! 6 And he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what these people are doing? They are doing great lawlessness here, for me to abandon my holy places; and yet you will see greater lawlessness!” 7 And he led me toward the doorway of the court. 8 And he said to me, “Son of man, dig.” And I dug, and look! A door! 9 And he said to me, “Enter, and see the transgressions that they do here.” 10 And I entered and looked, and look! Vain abominations and all the idols of the house of Israel were carved on it all around. 11 And seventy men from the elders of the house of Israel: Jeconiah son of Shaphan stood in the middle of them, before their face, and each had his censer in hand, and the vapor of the incense ascended. 12 And he said to me, “Have you seen, O son of man, what things the elders of the house of Israel are doing, each of them in their hidden bedchamber? Because they have said, ‘The Lord does not see. The Lord has left the land.’” 13 And he said to me, “You will see yet greater lawlessness that these people are doing.” 14 And he led me to the doorway of the gate of the house of the Lord that looks to the north, and look! Women seated there, wailing for Tammuz! 15 And he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen? And yet you will see practices worse than these!” 16 And he led me into the interior court of the house of the Lord and toward the front-door space of the temple of the Lord, between the Elam and between the altar, were about twenty men; their backsides were toward the temple of the Lord and their faces opposite, and they were bowing to the sun.[4] 17 And he said to me, “Have you seen, son of man? Is it a small thing for the house of Judah to be doing the transgressions that they have done here? Because they have filled the land with lawlessness! And look; it is as if they are mocking![5] 18 And I will treat them with wrath. My eye will have no pity, and I will show no mercy.”

9And he cried out in my ears with a great sound, saying, “The avenging of the city has come near. And each had implements of destruction in his hand.” 2 And look, six men were coming from the way of the high gate, which looks to the north, and each one’s axe was in his hand. And one man in the middle of them was clothed in a full-length robe and a belt of sapphire upon his loins. And they entered and stood near the brazen altar. 3 And the glory of the God of Israel that was upon them ascended from the cherubim, into the open space of the house. And he called the man, the one clothed in the fulllength robe, who had a belt upon his loins, 4 and said to him, “Pass through the midle of Jerusalem and place a sign upon the foreheads of the men who are mourning and of those grievously afflicted by all the lawlessnesses which are happening in their midst.” 5 And he said to these people, with me listening, “Go after him into the city and slaughter, and have no pity in your eyes, and show no mercy. 6 With destruction kill elder and youth and virgin and infant and woman. But you shall not approach any upon whom is the sign. Begin at my holy places.” And they began with the elder men who were inside in the house. 7 And he said to them, “Defile the house, and fill the roads with the dead! Go out and destroy!” 8 And this happened when they destroyed: I fell upon my face and shouted and I said, “Ah Lord, are you destroying the remnant of Israel, when you pour out your wrath against Jerusalem?” 9 And he said to me, “The injustice of the house of Israel and of Judah has become very, very great, because the land is filled with many peoples, and the city is filled with injustice and uncleanness, because they said, ‘The Lord has deserted the land! The Lord does not oversee! 10 And my eye will not spare, and I will show no mercy. I have given their ways to their head.” 11 And look, the man clothed in the full-length robe and who had girded his loins with the belt also answered, saying, “I have done just as you commanded me.”

10And I looked, and look! Above the firmament above the head of the cherubim: a likeness of a throne upon them, as a stone of sapphire! 2 And he said to the man clothed in the robe, “Enter into the middle of the wheels under the cherubim and fill your hands with fiery coals from the middle of the cherubim, and scatter them over the city.” And he went in before me. 3 And the cherubim stood on the right side of the house, as the man entered, and the cloud filled the interior court. 4 And the glory of the Lord separated from the cherubim into the open space of the house, and the cloud filled the house, and the court was filled with the light of the glory of the Lord. 5 And a sound of the wings of the cherubim kept being heard as far as the outer court as a voice of God Shaddai speaking. 6 And this happened when he commanded the man clothed in the robe, saying, “Take fire from the middle of the wheels from the middle of the cherubim.” And he went in and stood close to the wheels, 7 and he stretched out his hand into the middle of the fire which was in the middle of the cherubim, and he took and placed them into the hands of him clothed in the robe, and he took them and went out. 8 And I saw the cherubim having a likeness of human hands under their wings. 9 And I looked, and look! four wheels stood next to the cherubim, one wheel beside one cherub, and the appearance of the wheels was like the appearance of a stone of coal. 10 And their appearance was one likeness for the four, just like a wheel in the middle of a wheel. 11 When these were going, they would go on their four parts; they did not turn when they were going, because they went wherever the first one looked, and they did not turn when they were going. 12 And their backs and their hands and their wings and the wheels were full of eyes all around the four wheels, 13 and these wheels were called “Gelgel” while I was listening. 15 And the cherubim were this living being that I saw at the River Chebar. 16 And when the cherubim were going, the wheels would go, and these wheels were next to them, and when the cherubim were lifting up their wings to rise from the earth, their wheels would not turn. 17 When they stood, they stood, and when they were rising up, they would rise up with them, because the spirit of life was in them. 18 And the glory of the Lord went out from the house and went upon the cherubim. 19 And the cherubim took up their wings and they were raised from the earth before me. When they departed, the wheels also were next to them. And they stood upon the doorway of the opposite gate of the house of the Lord, and the glory of the God of Israel was upon them from above. 20 This living being is the one I saw under the God of Israel at the River Chebar, and I knew that they were cherubim. 21 One had four faces and one had eight wings, and a likeness of a human’s hands was under their wings. 22 And as for the likeness of their faces, these were the faces that I saw under the glory of the God of Israel by the River Chebar, and they each were going according to their face.

11And the spirit took me up and led me to the facing gate of the house of the Lord that looks toward the east. And near the entrance of the gate there were about twenty-five men. And I saw in the middle of them Jeconiah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, the leaders of the people. 2 And the Lord said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who are planning worthless things and deliberating a bad plan in this city, 3 who are saying, ‘Haven’t the houses been built recently? This city is the kettle, and we are the meat. 4 Because of this, prophesy against them. Prophesy, son of man!” 5 And the spirit fell upon me and said to me, “Say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “This is what you said, O house of Israel, and I know the deliberations of your spirit. 6 You have multiplied your corpses in this city, and you filled their roads with the wounded.” 7 Because of this, this is what the Lord says: “Your corpses which you struck in the middle of it, these are the meat, and this city is the kettle, and I will lead you out of the middle of it. 8 You fear the sword, and I will bring the sword against you,” says the Lord. 9 “And I will lead you out of the middle of it, and I will give you over into the hands of foreigners and execute judgments against you. 10 You will fall by the sword. At the mountains of Israel I will judge you, and you will acknowledge that I am the Lord.”’” 13 And this happened while I prophesied: Pelatiah son of Benaiah died, and I fall on my face and cried out with a great voice and said, “Ah! Ah! Lord, are you bringing the remnant of Israel to an end?” 14 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 15 “Son of man, your brothers and the men of your captivity and all the house of Israel have come to an end, to whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem said, ‘You are away far from the Lord; the land has been given to us for an inheritance. 16 Because of this say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “I will thrust them into the nations and scatter them into every land, and I will become a sanctuary for them in the territories they go into there.” 17 Because of this say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “I will also take them from the nations and gather them from the territories among which I scattered them. And I will give them the land of Israel. 18 And they will enter there and remove all its abominations and all its transgressions from it. 19 And I will give them another heart and give them a new spirit and remove the stone heart from their flesh and give them a fleshly heart, 20 in order that they may go in my duties and guard my ordinances and do them, and they will be my people, and I will be their God. 21 And as for the heart of their abominations and of their transgressions, just as their heart was going, I have repaid their ways onto their heads,” says the Lord.’” 22 And the cherubim lifted up their wings and the wheels next to them, and the glory of the God of Israel was on them, above them. 23 And the glory of the Lord ascended from the middle of the city and stood on the mountain that was opposite the city. 24 And the spirit took me up and carried me into the land of the Chaldeans into the body of captives in a prophetic vision in the spirit of God, and I ascended by the prophetic vision that I saw. 25 And I spoke to all the captives the words of the Lord, which he showed me.

12And the word of the Lord came to me saying, 2 “Son of man, you dwell in the middle of the injustices of those who have eyes to see and do not see and have ears to hear and do not hear, because it is a rebellious house. 3 And you, son of man, make yourself baggagea before them for captivity, during the day, and you will be taken prisoner from your place into another place before them so that they may see, because it is a rebellious house. 4 And you shall carry out your baggage, baggage for captivity during the day, before their eyes, and you shall go out at evening, as a captive goes out, 5 before them. Dig through the wall by yourself, and pass through it. 6 You will be carried on shoulders before them, and after being hidden you will go out; you will cover your face, and you will not see the earth, since I have made you a sign to the house of Israel.” 7 And I did so, according to everything he commanded me, and I carried the baggage of captivity during the day, and during the evening I dug through the wall by myself, and after being hidden, I went out; I was taken up on shoulders before them. 8 And the word of the Lord came to me early in the day, saying, 9 “Son of man, have not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said to you, ‘What are you doing? 10 – 11 Say to them, ‘Thus says the lord, the Lord, the ruler and the leader in Jerusalem and the whole house of Israel who are in the middle of them.’ Say that I am doing wonders; the way I have done, so will it be to him. They will go in removal and in captivity. 12 And the ruler in the middle will be carried on shoulders, and after being hidden he will go out through the wall, and dig through for him to go through it; he will cover his face to not be seen by eye, and he will not see the earth. 13 And I will spread out my net over him, and he will be collected in my fortified enclosure, and I will lead him into Babylon, into the land of the Chaldeans, but he will not see it, and there he will die. 14 And I will scatter all his helpers around him, and all those who assist him into every wind, and I will unsheath a sword after them, 15 and they will know that I am the Lord, when I scatter them among the nations and I scatter them among the territories. 16 But I will spare some of their men few in number from the sword and from famine and from death, so they can explain all their transgressions among the nations where they entered, and they will know that I am the Lord.”’” 17 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, you shall eat your bread with pain and drink water with torment and affliction, 19 and you shall say to the people of the land, ‘This is what the Lord says to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, against the land of Israel: “They will eat their loaves with want, and drink their water with destruction, in order that the land be blotted out with its fullness, for all the inhabitants in it are in impiety. 20 And their inhabited cities will be abandoned, and the land will become a ruin, and you will acknowledge that I am the Lord.”’” 21 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 22 “Son of man, what is the parable of yours against the land of Israel, when you say, ‘The days are long; the vision is demolished’? 23 Because of this, say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: “I will even turn back this parable, and the house of Israel should never again say this parable,”’ because you will say to them, ‘The days have come near, and the thing of every vision! 24 Because there will be no more false vision or person divining things gratuitously in the middle of the sons of Israel, 25 because I, the Lord, will speak my words; I will speak, and I will do what I said; and I will not delay any longer, because, O rebellious house, I will speak a word and will do it in your time,’ says the Lord.” 26 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 27 “Son of man, look! The rebellious house of Israel are certainly saying,a ‘The prophetic vision which he sees is for many days, and he prophesies for a distant time. 28 On account of this, say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: “None of my words that I speak will delay any longer; I will speak it and do it,” says the Lord.’”

13And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel, and you shall prophesy and say to them, ‘Hear the word of the Lord. 3 This is what the Lord says: “Woe to those who prophesy from their heart and see nothing at all! 4 Your prophets are like foxes in the deserts, O Israel. 5 They did not stand in steadfastness, and they gathered flocks against the house of Israel; the ones who say, ‘In the day of the Lord,’ did not stand. 6 The ones who say, ‘The Lord says,’ and the Lord did not send them, are seeing lies, divining vain things! And they began to set up the word. 7 Have you not seen false things as a vision, and spoken empty prophecies?” 8 “On account of this say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Because of your lying oracles and your worthless divinations, on account of this, look, I am against you,” says the Lord, 9 “and I will stretch out my hand against the prophets who are seeing a lie and who divine false things. They will not be in the discipline of my people. And they will not be enrolled in the enrollment of the house of Israel, and they will not enter into the land of Israel, and they will know that I am the Lord. 10 Because they led astray my people saying, ‘Peace!’ and there was no peace, and one builds a wall and they whitewash it; it will fall. 11 Say to the whitewashers, ‘Fall!’ and there will be flooding rain, and I will place hailstones into their mortar, and they will fall, and a wind will rise up, and it will be shattered. 12 And look, the wall has fallen, and will they not say to you, ‘Where is your whitewash with which you whitewashed?’” 13 On account of this, this is what the Lord says: “And I will break out a high wind with wrath, and there will be flooding rain in my anger, and I will bring hailstones in wrath, for destruction. 14 And I will utterly destroy a wall which you whitewashed; it will fall, and I will place it against the earth, and I will uncover its foundation, and it will fall, and you will be consumed with rebukes, and you will acknowledge that I am the Lord. 15 Then I will accomplish my wrath against the wall and against those who whitewash it; it will fall. And I said to you, ‘There is no wall, nor those who whitewash it, 16 the prophets of Israel, who prophesy at Jerusalem and see peace for it, and there is no peace,’ says the Lord.” 17 “And you, son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people, who prophesy from their hearts, and prophesy against them. 18 And you shall say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Woe to the women who sew pillows under every elbowa and make coverings upon every head of every stature, to pervert the soul. The lives of my people are perverted, and they preserve their soul. 19 And they have profaned me to my people for a handful of barley and for the morsels of loaves, to kill souls that do not need to die and to preserve lives that do not need to live, when you prophesy to a people that listens to vain speeches.” 20 On account of this, this is what the lord, the Lord says: “Look, I am against your pillows, by which you turn souls, and I will break these away from your arms, and I will dispatch those souls that you pervert into a scattering, 21 and I will tear your coverings and rescue my people from your hand, and they will no longer become prey in your hand, and you will acknowledge that I am the Lord. 22 Because you return a righteous person’s heart, but I did not turn him, and you strengthen a lawless person’s hands so to completely turn from his worthless way and live, 23 on account of this you shall not see false things, and you shall not divine divination again, and I will rescue my people from your hand, and you will know that I am the Lord.”’”

14Then some men of the elders of Israel came to me and sat in front of my face. 2 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 3 “Son of man, these men set their thoughts upon their hearts and set the punishment of their injustices before their face. Should I, answering, answer them? 4 On account of this, speak to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord: “I, the Lord, shall answer a person, any person, from the house of Israel who sets his thoughts upon his heart and sets the punishment of his injustice before his face, and comes to the prophet, by that with which his thought entangles him, 5 in order that he should turn the house of Israel aside according to their hearts, which have been alienated from me by their thoughts.” 6 “On account of this, say to the house of Israel: ‘This is what the lord, the Lord, says: “Return and turn away from your practices and from all your ungodliness, and turn your faces. 7 Because I, the Lord, shall answer a person, any person, of the house of Israel and of the resident aliens of those who live among Israel who are alienated from me, and sets his thoughts upon his heart and sets the stumbling block of his injustice before his face, and comes to the prophet to ask him by me, by that in which he entangles himself. 8 And I will set my face against that person, and I will make him deserted and a ruin, and I will lift him up from the middle of my people, and you will acknowledge that I am the Lord. 9 And as for the prophet, if he misleads and speaks, I, the Lord, have misled that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him and remove him from the middle of my people Israel. 10 And they will receive their injustice; according to the injustice of the one who inquires, so will it be to the prophet, according to the injustice, 11 so that the house of Israel might not wander from me again, and in order that they should not be defiled again by all their transgressions, and they will become a people to me, and I will become God to them, says the Lord.”’” Noah, Daniel, and Job 12 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 13 “Son of man, if the land sins against me to transgress a transgression, then I will stretch out my hand against it and crush its support of bread to pieces, and I will dispatch famine against it and remove human and animal from it. 14 And if these three men should be in its midst, Noah and Daniel and Job, they will be saved by their righteousness,” says the Lord. 15 “If also I bring evil wild animals against the land and punish it, and it becomes a ruin, and there is no one who travels through because of the face of the wild animals, 16 and these three men should be in the middle of it, as I live,” says the Lord, “certainly neither sons nor daughters will be saved, except these alone will be saved, and the land will be devastated. 17 Or again, if I also bring a sword against that land and I say, ‘Let the sword pass through the land and remove human and animal from it,’ 18 and these three men are in the middle of it, as I live,” says the Lord, “they shall not rescue sons nor daughters; they alone will be saved. 19 Or should I also send death upon that land and pour out my wrath against it in blood, to utterly destroy human and animal from it, 20 and Noah and Daniel and Job be in the middle of it, as I live,” says the Lord, “neither sons nor daughters would be left remaining. They will rescue their lives by their righteousness.” 21 This is what the Lord says: “And if I also dispatch my four evil avengers: sword and famine and evil wild animals and death, against Jerusalem, to utterly destroy human and animal from it, 22 and look, those of her who have escaped are left behind in it, who are leading sons and daughters out of it; look, they are going out to you, and you will see their ways 23 and their thoughts, and you will acknowledge that I have not done all that I did in it without reason,” says the Lord.

15Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “And you, son of man, of all of the trees among the trees of the forest, what should the tree of the vine be? 3 Would they take wood from it to make anything? Or would they take a peg from it to hang any vessel on it? 4 It is only given to the fire for consumption. The fire consumes that which is pruned from it every year, and it finally comes to an end. Will it be useful for any work? 5 Not even when it is intact will it be fit for any work. If even fire does not finally consume it, will it still be fit for any work? 6 “On account of this, say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “The way the tree of the vine among the trees of the thicket, that I have given to the fire for consumption, so I have placed those who dwell in Jerusalem. 7 And I will put my face against them; they will come out from the fire, and fire will devour them, and they will acknowledge that I am the Lord, when I set my face against them. 8 And I will grant the land to be a ruin because they transgressed with a trangression,” says the Lord.’”

16And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, warn Jerusalem of its lawlessness. 3 And you shall say, ‘This is what the Lord says to Jerusalem: “Your root and your origin are from the land of Canaan; your father was an Amorite, and your mother was a Hittite. 4 And your origin in the day you were brought forth, you did not tie your breasts, and you were not washed in water or salted with salt or wrapped with swathing bands, 5 and my eye had no pity on you, of all these things of yours, to feel anything concerning you, and you were thrown upon the face of the field by the crookedness of your soul on the day you were brought forth. 6 And I came over to you and saw you mixed in blood, and I said to you: ‘Life from your blood! 7 Grow! I have made you like the rising of the field.’ And you grew and were strengthened and entered into the cities of cities. Your breasts grew firm and your hair appeared, but you were naked and shamed. 8 And I came over to you and I saw you, and look, it was your time, and a time of rest, and I spread my wings over you and covered your shame, and I swore to you and entered a covenant with you,” says the Lord, “and you became mine. 9 Then I washed you in water, and I cleansed your blood from you, and I anointed you with oil. 10 And I put multicolored garments on you, and I put hyacinth colored shoes on you, and I girded you with fine linen and placed a veil of fine hair around you. 11 And I furnished you with ornamentation and placed an armlet around your arm and a necklace around your neck. 12 And I placed a ring about your nose and an earring on your ears and a glorious crown on your head. 13 And you were dressed in gold and silver, and your cloak was fine linen and fine hair and multicolored cloth. You ate the finest wheat flour and olive oil and honey, and you became very beautiful. 14 And your name went out among the nations because of your beauty, because it was accomplished by goodly appearance in the bloom of youth that I arranged upon you,” says the Lord. 15 ‘“You trusted in your beauty and you prostituted yourself over your reputation, and you poured out your prostitution over every passerby. 16 And you took some of your garments and made yourself stitched idols, and you prostituted yourself with them, and you will certainly not enter, nor will this happen. 17 And you took implements of your boasting from my gold and from my silver, from what I gave you, and you made yourself male images and prostituted yourself with them; 18 and you took your many-colored clothing and put it on them, and you set my olive oil and my incense before their face; 19 and my cakes of bread which I gave you (I fed you the finest wheat flour and olive oil and honey), you also set these before their face for a scent of appeasement, and it happened!” says the Lord. 20 “And you took your sons and your daughters, which you brought forth, and you sacrificed them to them for consuming. You prostituted yourself as if these were small things. 21 And you slaughtered your children and gave them up when you offered them as an appeasement to them. 22 This is beyond all your prostitution, and you did not remember your childhood, the days when you were naked and shamed; you lived soaked in your blood. 23 And this happened after all your wickedness,” says the Lord. 24 ‘“And when you had built yourself a brothel, you also made yourself a public display in every street. 25 And at the beginning of every way you built your prostitutions, and you defiled your beauty, and you spread your legs for every passerby, and you increased your prostitution, 26 and you prostituted yourself with the sons of Egypt, those neighboring you, those of great flesh, and you prostituted yourself in many ways to provoke me. 27 And if I stretch out my hand against you, I will also remove your ordinances, and I will hand over, for the lives of those who hate you, those daughters of foreigners who turned you away from your way. 28 and prostituted yourself with the daughters of Assyria, and even in this way you were not satisfied, and you prostituted yourself, and were not satisfied. 29 And you increased your treaties with the land of the Chaldeans, and not even in these things were you satisfied. 30 Why should I make a covenant with your daughter,” says the Lord, “when you have done all these things, the work of a prostitute woman? And you prostituted yourself threefold among your daughters:[6] 31 You built a brothel at every beginning of a way, and you made your high place in every street, and you became like a prostitute gathering her wages. 32 The woman who commits adultery is like you, accepting wages from her husband; 33 she was giving wages to all who committed prostitution with her, and you gave wages to all your lovers, and you were loading them with money to come to you from all around in your prostitution. 34 And a perversity for your prostitution appeared in you beyond that of other women, and they have committed prostitution with you when you gave wages, and wages were not given to you, and perversity appeared in you.” 35 ‘On account of this, O prostitute, hear the word of the Lord. 36 This is what the Lord says: “Because you poured out your money,a also your shame will be uncovered for your prostitution with your lovers and for all the thoughts of your transgressions and for the blood of your children, which you gave to them. 37 On account of this, look, I am gathering all your lovers among whom you consorted, and all whom you loved, with all whom you hated, and I will gather them against you from all around and will uncover your wickedness to them, and they will see all your shame. 38 And I will avenge you with the vengeance of an adulteress, and I will place you in the blood of wrath and of jealousy. 39 And I will give you into their hands; and they will utterly destroy your brothel and take down your high place, and they will strip you of your cloak and take the implements of your boasting, and they will leave you naked and dishonored. 40 And they will lead a crowd against you, and they will pelt you with stones, and they will murder you with their swords. 41 And they will set your houses on fire and bring about vengeance against you before many women, and I will return you from prostitution, and you shall no longer give the price. 42 And I will let my wrath loose against you, and my zeal will be removed from you, and I will rest, and I shall no longer be anxious. 43 Because you did not remember your childhood, and you grieved me in all these things, and look, I have repaid your ways onto your head,” says the Lord, “and in this way you did impiety on top of all your other lawlessnesses.” 44 ‘“These things are all what they said against you in a parable, saying, ‘Like the mother, 45 also the daughter.’ You are your mother’s daughter, she who spurned her husband and her children, and sisters of your sisters, who spurned their husbands and their children; your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite. 46 Your elder sister was Samaria, she and her daughters dwelling on your left, and your younger sister dwelling on your right was Sodom and her daughters. 47 But you did not go as in their ways, nor did you act according to their transgressions; beyond small you even exceeded them in all your ways. 48 As I live,” says the Lord, “cursed if Sodom, both she and her daughters, has not acted the way you and your daughters did! 49 Surely this was the transgression of Sodom your sister: arrogance. She and her daughters were living lewdly, in abundance of bread and plenty; this was hers and her daughters’, but she did not help the hand of the beggarly and poor. 50 And they were boasting and committed transgressions of the law before me; and I removed them just as I saw them. 51 And Samaria did not sin according to half of your sins, but you increased your transgressions beyond them,b and you vindicated your sister by all your transgressions that you did. 52 So, you receive your torment by which you ruined your sister by your sins that you committed lawlesssly more than them, and you vindicated them more than yourself; so, be dishonored and receive your dishonor, when you vindicate your sister. 53 And I will return their return, the return of Sodom and her daughters, and I will return the return of Samaria and her daughters, and I will return your return back in the middle of them, 54 in order that she should bear your torment, and you will be dishonored by all that you did when you provoked me to anger. 55 And your sister Sodom and her daughters will be restored, just as they were from the beginning, and you and your daughters will be restored, just as you were from the beginning. 56 And didn’t Sodom your sister become a report in your mouth in the days of your arrogance, 57 before your wickedness was uncovered, the way you are now a reproach of the daughters of Syria and of all those around her, even of the daughters of the foreigners that surround you? 58 You have borne your impieties and your transgressions,” says the Lord. 59 ‘“This is what the Lord says: “I will also act among you just as you did, when you dishonored these things to break my covenant. 60 But I will remember my covenant with you in the days of your childhood, and I will establish an eternal covenant with you. 61 And you will remember your way and be utterly dishonored when you take back your older sisters with your younger ones, and I will give them to you for a building, but not from your covenant. 62 And I will establish my covenant with you, and you will acknowledge that I am the Lord, 63 in order that you may remember and may be ashamed, and it may be for you to open your mouth again from the face of your dishonor, when I make propitiation for you according to all things that you have done,” says the Lord.”’”

17And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, tell a tale, and speak a parable to the house of Israel. 3 And you shall say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “A great eagle, with great wings, wide in spread, full of claws, with the purpose of entering Lebanon! And it took the choice parts of the cedar; 4 it nipped off the tops of the tender twig, and it carried them into the land of Canaan; it placed them in a walled city. 5 And he took some of the seed of the land and placed it in the plain planted by much water; he arranged it attentively. 6 And it sprang up and became a vine feeble and small, so that it presented its branches over it, and its roots were under it, and it became a vine, and it made shoots and stretched out its tendril. 7 And another great eagle came, greatwinged, many-clawed, and look, this vine entwined against him, and its roots against him, and its branches extended to him for him to give it a drink, along with the soil of its planting. 8 This vine was enriched in a good plain by much water, to make shoots and bear fruit, to become a great vine.’” 9 On account of this, say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Will it prosper? Will not the roots of its tender twig and the fruit be made rotten, and all its sprouts be dried up, and this not by a great arm or by many people, to remove it from its root? 10 And look; does it thrive? It does not prosper, does it? Will it not be dried up the moment the burning wind touches it? It will be dried up along with the soil of its rising.”’” 11 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 12 “Son of man, say now to the rebelling house: ‘Do you not know what these things were?’ Say, ‘Whenever the king of Babylon should come against Jerusalem, he will take its king and its rulers and he will lead them to himself, into Babylon. 13 And he will take some of the seed of the kingdom and establish a covenant with him and bind him by an oath, and he will take the leader of the land, 14 so that it may become a weak kingdom, not to be exalted at all, to observe his covenant and establish it. 15 But he turned away from him, to send his own messengers into Egypt to give to him horses and a great army.a Will he prosper? Will the one who acts contrary be preserved? And will the one who breaks a covenant be preserved? 16 “As I live,” says the Lord, “cursed if he will not die with him in the middle of Babylon, in the place where the king is who made himself king, who dishonored my oath and who transgressed my covenant. 17 And Pharaoh will make war with him not by great power or mighty crowd, by throwing up a palisade and building engines to take souls. 18 And he dishonored the oath by breaking a covenant, and look, I have granted his hand, and he did all these things to him. Will he not be saved?” 19 On account of this, say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “As I live, cursed if I will not repay on his head my oath which he dishonored and my covenant which he transgressed. 20 And I will spread the net out over him, and he will be conquered in its enclosure. 21 In all his line of battle they will fall by the sword, and I will scatter the remnant abroad into every wind, and you will acknowledge that I, the Lord, have spoken.’” 22 “‘Because this is what the Lord says: “I will also take some of the choice ones of the cedar from the top; I will nip off their hearts and plant them on a high mountain 23 and hang him on a high mountain of Israel, and I will plant him, and he will bring forth a shoot, and it will make fruit and become a great cedar, and every bird will stop under it, and every winged creature will stop under its shade; its branches will be restored. 24 And all the trees of the field will know that I am the Lord, who brings a high tree low and raises a low tree up and who dries up green wood and makes dry wood sprout. I, the Lord, have spoken and will do it.”’”

18And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, why do you have this parableb among the sons of Israel, saying, ‘The fathers ate unripe grapes, and the children’s teeth were set on edge? 3 As I live,” says the Lord, “this parable will no longer be said among Israel. 4 For all lives are mine; the way is the life of the father, so also the life of the son; they are mine; the soul that sins, this is the one that will die. 5 And the human who is righteous, who does righteousness, 6 will not eat upon the hills, and he shall certainly not lift his eyes to the thoughts of the house of Israel, or defile the wife of his neighbor, or approach a menstruating woman, 7 or oppress a person. He will return the pledge of the debtor, and he will not seize booty; he will give his bread to the hungry and clothe the naked 8 and not give his moneyc at interest, and not take usury, and turn his hand away from injustice; he will make righteous justice between a man and between his neighbor, 9 and he has walked by my commandments and taken care to do my duties. This is a righteous person; he will live by life,” says the Lord. 10 “And if he fathers a pestilent son, who pours out blood and does offence, 11 who has not walked in the way of his righteous father, but rather has even eaten upon the mountains and defiled the wife of his neighbor, 12 and oppressed the poor and needy, and seized spoil, and did not return a pledge, and set his eyes to idols, he has done lawlessness; 13 he gave with interest and took usury; this one will not live by life. He did all these transgressions; he will be put to death by death. His blood will be upon him. 14 And if he fathers a son and he sees all the sins of his father that he did, and he is afraid and does not act according to these sins: 15 he has not eaten upon the hills or set his eyes into the thoughts of the house of Israel, or defiled the wife of his neighbor, 16 or oppressed a human, or taken a pledge, or seized spoil; he has given his bread to the hungry, and covered the naked, 17 and turned back his hand from injustice, has not taken interest or usury, has done righteousness and gone in my ordinances, he will not die for the injustices of his father. He will live by life. 18 But if his father afflicts with affliction and seizes spoil, then he has done what is contrary in the middle of my people, and he will die in his wrongdoing.” 19 “And you will say, ‘Why did the son not receive the injustice of the father?’ Because the son has done righteousness and mercy, has kept all my ordinances, and has done them, he will live by life. 20 But the soul who sins will die. But the son will not receive the injustice of the father or the father receive the injustice of the son. The righteousness that belongs to the righteous will be upon him, and the lawlessness that belongs to the lawless will be upon him. 21 But if the lawless person returns from all his transgressions which he has done, and keeps all my commands and does righteousness and mercy, he will live by life; he will certainly not die. 22 All his transgressions that he did will not be remembered. He will live by his righteousness which he has done. 23 I do not really want the death of the lawless, do I,” says the Lord, “as much as that he return from the way of evil and that he live? 24 But when a righteous person turns back from his righteousness and commits injustice according to all the transgressions that the lawless do, all his righteousness which he did shall certainly not be remembered. He will die in his transgression by which he transgressed and in his sins by which he sinned. 25 But you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not right.’ Hear now, house of Israel: Is my way not right? Is your way right? 26 When the righteous person turns back from his righteousness and commits a transgression, then he shall die by it. He shall die by the transgression which he committed. 27 But when a lawless person turns back from his lawlessness which he committed, and he does justice and righteousness, this one has kept his soul. 28 And he has turned away from all his ungodliness which he did; he will live by life. He should certainly not die. 29 But the house of Israel, they say: ‘The way of the Lord is not right.’ Is my way not right, O house of Israel? Is it not your way that is not right? 30 I will judge you each according to his way, O house of Israel,” says the Lord. “Turn around, and turn away from all your impious acts, and they will not become a punishment of injustice for you. 31 Throw away from yourselves all your impious acts by which you were impious to me, and make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, O house of Israel? 32 Because I do not want the death of the dying,” says the Lord.

19“And you, take up a lament concerning the ruler of Israel, 2 and you shall say, ‘What is your mother? She became a lion’s cub in the middle of lions. In the middle of lions she multiplied her cubs. 3 And one of her cubs hurried off; he became a lion and learned to seize prey; he ate humans. 4 And nations heard about him; he was captured in their destruction, and they led him by the muzzle into the land of Egypt. 5 And she saw that he was thrust aside from her; her hope was destroyed, and she took another one of her cubs; she appointed him a lion. 6 And he dwelled in the middle of lions. He became a lion, and he learned to seize prey; he ate humans. 7 And he kept being fed by his insolence, and he desolated their cities and blotted out the land and its fullness by the sound of his roaring. 8 And nations from surrounding territories set against him, and they opened their nets over him. He was captured in their destruction, 9 and they placed him in a muzzle and he came to the king of Babylon in a cage, and he led him into a prison, in order that his voice should not be heard on the mountains of Israel.’” 10 “‘Your mother was like a vine and like a blossom in a pomegranate tree planted in water; her fruit and her shoot came from much water. 11 And she became a rod over a tribe of leaders and was lifted high by her greatness in the middle of the branches, and she saw its greatness in the multitude of her branches. 12 Yet she was broken by wrath; she was thrown upon the earth, and a burning wind dried up her choicest things. They were avenged, and her strong rod dried up; fire consumed her. 13 And now they have planted her in the desert, in a waterless land. 14 And fire went out from a rod of her choicest things, and it devoured her, and there was no strong rod in her. The tribe is becoming a parable of lamentation, and it will become a lamentation.’”

20And this happened in the seventh year, in the fifteenth of the month: some men of the elders of the house of Israel came to inquire of the Lord, and they sat before my face. 2 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 3 “Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel, and you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Do you come to inquire of me? As I live, I will surely not answer you,” says the Lord, 4 “Shall I punish them with punishment?”’ Son of man, warn against them regarding the transgressions of their fathers, 5 and you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: “From the day when I chose the house of Israel and was made known to the seed of the house of Jacob and became known to them in the land of Egypt, and took hold of them by my hand, saying, ‘I am the Lord your God,’ 6 in that day I took hold of them by my hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt into the land which I prepared for them, a land flowing with milk and honey; it is a honeycomb beyond all the earth. 7 And I said to them, ‘Let everyone throw away the abominations of the eyes, and do not be defiled by the practices of Egypt. I am the Lord your God. 8 But they turned away from me and did not want to listen to me. They did not throw away the abominations of their eyes or desert the practices of Egypt. And I promiseda to pour out my wrath upon them to complete my anger among them in the middle of the land of Egypt. 9 But I acted in order that my name should absolutely not be profaned before the nations in the middle of whom they are, among whom I was made known to them before them, to lead them out from the land of Egypt. 10 And I led them into the desert, 11 and I gave them my ordinances, and I made my duties known to them, which a person shall do and live by them. 12 And I gave them my sabbaths to become a sign between me and between them, that they might know that I am the Lord who is sanctifying them. 13 And I said to the house of Israel in the desert, ‘Walk in my ordinances!’ And they did not walk in them, and they spurned my duties, which a person shall do and live by them, and they profaned my sabbaths very much, and I said I would pour out my wrath upon them in the desert to consume them. 14 But I acted in order that my name should absolutely not be profaned before the nations according to whose eyes I led them. 15 But I lifted my hand against them in the desert to absolutely not lead them into the land which I gave them, a land flowing with milk and honey, a honeycomb beyond every land, 16 because they spurned my duties, and they did not walk in my ordinances, and they kept profaning my sabbaths, and they kept going after the thoughts of their heart. 17 And my eye had pity on them from destroying them, and I did not make an end of them in the desert. 18 And I said to their children in the desert, ‘Do not walk in the ordinances of your fathers, or keep their duties, or mix in their practices, or be defiled. 19 I am the Lord your God; walk in my ordinances, and keep my duties, and do these things, 20 and sanctify my sabbaths, and let it become a sign between me and you, to know that I am the Lord your God. 21 And their children also rebelled against me. They did not walk in my ordinances, and they did not keep my duties to do them, which a person will do and live by them, and they kept profaning my sabbaths, and I said I would pour out my wrath on them in the desert, to accomplish my anger upon them. 22 And I acted so that my name should absolutely not be profaned before the nations, and I led them out before their eyes. 23 Also I lifted my hand against them in the desert to scatter them among the nations, to scatter them among the territories, 24 because they did not perform my duties, and they spurned my ordinances, and they kept profaning my sabbaths, and their eyes were after the thoughts of their fathers. 25 And I gave them ordinances that were not good and duties by which they could not live by them. 26 And I will defile them by their gifts in that everything that opens a womb goes through me, so that I will blot them out.” 27 “Therefore, speak to the house of Israel, son of man, and you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Until this time your fathers provoked me by their transgressions by which they committed apostasy against me. 28 And I led them into the land regarding which I lifted up the hand, my hand, to give to them, and they saw every high hill and every shaded tree and there they sacrificed to their gods, and there they offered sweet smelling offerings, and there they poured their drink-offerings. 29 And I said to them, ‘What is Abana, that you enter that place?’ And they called its name Abana to this day.” 30 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Will you be defiled by the transgressions of your fathers and commit prostitution after their abominations? 31 And by the firstfruits of your gifts, by special offerings by which you are defiled in all your thoughts until today; and shall I answer you, house of Israel? As I live,” says the Lord, “I will certainly not answer you, nor will this arise upon your spirit. 32 And it will not be the way you say: ‘We will be like the nations and like the tribes of the earth, to serve wood and stone. 33 On account of this, as I live,” says the Lord, “by a strong hand and by a high arm and by outpoured wrath I will reign over you, 34 and I will lead you out from the people, and I will gather you from the territories among whom you were scattered by a strong hand and a high arm and by outpoured wrath, 35 and I will lead you into the wilderness of the peoples, and I will dispute with you there face to face. 36 The way I disputed with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will judge you, says the Lord. 37 And I will bring you out under my rod, and I will lead you by number, 38 and I will reprove those of you who are impious and apostates, because I will lead them out from their sojourning, and they will not enter into the land of Israel, and you will acknowledge that I am the lord, the Lord.” 39 “‘And as for you, house of Israel, this is what the lord, the Lord says: “Everyone remove his practices, and after this if you do not listen to me and profane my holy name further by your gifts and by your practices, 40 because upon my holy mountain, upon the high mountain,” says the lord, the Lord, “there all the house of Israel will serve me completely, and there I will welcome and there examine your firstfruits and the firstfruits of your special offerings with all your holy objects. 41 I will accept you with a sweet smell when I lead out you from the people and gather you from the territories among which you were scattered, and I will be hallowed by you according to the eyes of the peoples. 42 And you will acknowledge that I am the Lord, when I lead you into the land of Israel, into the land in which I lifted my hand to give it to your fathers. 43 And there you will remember your ways, and your practices by which you were defiling yourselves, and you will strike your faces because of all your wickedness. 44 And you will acknowledge that I am the Lord when I act this way to you in order that my name should not be profaned according to your wicked ways and according to your corrupt practices,” says the Lord.’” 45 aAnd the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 46 “Son of man, set your face against Teman and look intently against Dagon and prophesy against the forest that is before Negeb; 47 and you will say to the forest of Negeb, ‘Hear an oracle of the Lord! Thus says the lord, the Lord: “Look, I am kindling a fire among you, and it will devour green tree and every dry tree among you. The kindled flame will not be quenched, and every face will be burned up by it, from the east to the north. 48 And all flesh will acknowledge that I, the Lord, kindled it; it will not be quenched.”’” 49 And I said, “Certainly not, lord, the Lord. They will say to me, ‘Is this saying not a parable?’”

21And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “On account of this, prophesy, son of man; set your face against Jerusalem and look intently upon their holy things; and you shall prophesy against the land of Israel. 3 And you shall say to the land of Israel, ‘Look, I am against you, and I will remove my sword from its sheath, and I will utterly destroy the unrighteous and lawless from you![7] 4 Because I will utterly destroy the unrighteous and lawless from you, so my sword will come out from its sheath against all flesh from the east to the north, 5 and all flesh will acknowledge that I, the Lord, drew out my sword from its sheath; it will never return. 6 But you, son of man, sigh with the crushing of your loins, and sigh in pain before their eyes. 7 And this will happen if they say to you, ‘What are you sighing for?’ And you shall say, ‘Because of the news that is coming, and every heart will be shattered, and all hands will be enfeebled, and all flesh and every spirit will faint, and all thighs will be stained by moisture.’ Look, it is coming!” says the lord, the Lord. 8 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 9 “Son of man, prophesy, and you will say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Say, ‘Sword, O sword, be sharp and angry, 10 that you should slay a victim! Be sharp, that you should become gleaming, prepared for destruction! Slaughter! Set at naught! Cut off every tree!’” 11 And he placed it ready for his hand to hold; the sword has been sharpened; he is ready to give it into the hand of the slayer. 12 Cry out and howl, O son of man, because this sword came among my people, this sword among all those who lead Israel. They sojourn; it has happened with a sword among my people. On account of this clap your hand. 13 Because it is justified; and has the tribe been cut off? It will not happen,” says the lord, the Lord. 14 “But you, son of man, prophesy, and clap your hands, and double the sword; the third sword wounding is the great sword of wounding, and you shall confound them, 15 in order that the heart should not be grieved and the weak should be multiplied at every gate. They have been given over as victims of the sword; it has become well suited for slaugther; it has become well suited for gleaming. 16 ‘Go on, sword! Be sharpened on the right and on the left, wherever your face arises! 17 And I also will clap my hands and discharge my wrath.’ I, the Lord, have spoken.” 18 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 19 “And you, O son of man, appoint for yourself two ways 20 for the sword of the king of Babylon to come; the two ways will come from one territory, and a hand in the beginning of the way of the city; at the beginning of the way you shall command the sword to come against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon and against Judea and against Jerusalem in the middle of it. 21 Because the king of Babylon will stand at the ancient road, at the beginning of the two roads, to divine a divination, to shake a rod and to inquire among the graven images and to inspect the liver from his right side. 22 The oracle came against Jerusalem, to place a palisade, to open the mouth with a shout, to lift up the voice with shouting, to place a palisade against its gates, and to throw up an embankment and to build banks of artillery. 23 But he is to them as one who divines divination before them, and he himself recalling his injustice, to be remembered. 24 On account of this, this is what the Lord says: ‘Because you remembered your injustice when your impieties were uncovered, so that your sins were seen, in all your impieties and in your practices, because you remembered, you will be conquered by these. 25 And as for you, lawless unclean leader of Israel, whose day has come as an end in a time of injustice, 26 this is what the Lord says: ‘Take away the tiara and put on the crown; it will not be like this, by lowering the high and raising up the low. 27 I will make it injustice, injustice, injustice! Woe to it! This will be like this until he to whom it belongs comes, and I will hand it over to him.’” 28 “But you, O son of man, prophesy, and you shall say, ‘This is what the Lord says against the sons of Ammon and against their reproaching,’ and you will say, ‘Sword! O sword drawn for slaughter and drawn for destruction, rouse yourself in order that you might glisten. 29 In your empty vision and when you prophesy lies, to repay you upon the necks of wounded, lawless people, the day has come as an end in a time of injustice. 30 Turn away! Do not rest in this place in which you were brought forth; I will judge you in your own land! 31 And I will pour out my anger against you. I will blow fire of my wrath against you, and I will deliver you into the hands of barbarous men skilled at making destruction. 32 You will be fuel for the fire; your blood will be in the middle of your land. There will certainly be no remembrance of you, because I, the Lord, have spoken.’”

22And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “And you, O son of man, will you certainly judge the bloody city and reveal all its transgressions to it? 3 And you shall say, ‘This is what the lord, the Lord says: “O city who pours out blood in the middle of it, so that its time might come, and making thoughts by yourself to defile it! 4 You have transgressed by their blood which you poured out, and you defiled yourselves by your thoughts which you were doing, and you brought near your day, and brought the time of your years. On account of this, I have granted you to be a reproach to the nations and a mockery to all territories, 5 to those who approach you and to those staying far from you, and they will mock you; your reputation is impure and great in unrighteous acts. 6 Look, those who lead the house of Israel, each to his neighbor, have conspired in you in order that they might pour out blood. 7 In you they would revile father and mother, and in you they would turn away the sojourner unjustly; they would oppress orphan and widow. 8 And in you they would disdain my sanctuaries and profane my sabbaths. 9 In you are robbers, that in you they might pour out blood, and in you they ate feasts upon the hills; in the middle of you they would do unholy things. 10 In you they have uncovered a father’s shame, and in you they would humble a menstruating woman in impurity. 11 In you each one has corrupted the wife of his neighbor, and each one would defile his daughter-in-law in wrongdoing, and each would humble his sister, a daughter of his father. 12 They would take giftsa in you, that they might pour out blood; in you they would take interest and usury, and you have completed the completion (which is by oppression) of your wickedness, but you forgot me,” says the Lord. 13 “And if I will bring my hand against those things you accomplished, which you have done, and against your blood which happened in the middle of you, 14 Will your heart withstand it? Will your hands be strong in the days in which I will work in you? I, the Lord, have spoken and will do it. 15 But I will scatter you among the nations, and I will spread you among the territories, and your impurity will come to an end from you, 16 and I will assign an inheritance among you before the eyes of the nations, and you will know that I am the Lord.”’” 17 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, look, the house of Israel, they have become to me all mixed together with copper and iron and tin and lead, in the middle of silver it is mixed. 19 On account of this, say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Because you became a single mixture, on account of this, I gather you into the middle of Jerusalem. 20 Just as silver and as bronze and iron and tin and lead are gathered into the middle of a furnace, to blow a fire into it to be smelted, so I will gather in my wrath, and I will collect and smelt you. 21 And I will blow against you in the fire of my wrath, and you will be smelted in the middle of it. 22 The way silver is smelted in the middle of an oven, so you will be smelted in the middle of it, and you will acknowledge that I, the Lord, poured out my anger against you.”’” 23 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 24 “Son of man, say to her, ‘You are a land which does not receive rain, and no heavy shower came upon you in the day of anger, 25 whose leaders in the midst of her are like roaring lions seizing spoil; they are consuming lives in power, and they are taking honors, and your widows have increased in your midst. 26 And her priests have set aside my law, and they were profaning my sacred things; they would not distinguish between holy and impure, and between unclean and clean, and they were covering their eyes from my sabbaths, and I was being profaned in their midst. 27 Her rulers in her midst are like wolves seizing prey to pour out blood, that they should grasp with greed. 28 And her prophets who are whitewashing them will fall, those who see false things, who divine empty things, who say, “This is what the Lord says,” but the Lord has not spoken, 29 who extort the people of the land with injustice, and seize a spoil, who oppress the poor and the needy, and do not behave with justice to the sojourner. 30 And I was seeking from them a man who would behave rightly and stand perfectly before my face in the time of the land, that I might not completely destroy it, and I found no one. 31 And I poured my anger upon it, in the fire of my wrath, to consume it; I have given their ways upon their heads,’ says the lord, the Lord.”

23And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, two women were daughters of one mother, 3 and they prostituted themselves in Egypt in their youth. There their breasts fell. There they were deflowered. 4 And their names were Oholah (the elder sister) and Oholibah (her sister), and they were mine, and they bore sons and daughters, and here are their names: Oholah was Samaria and Oholibah was Jerusalem. 5 But Oholah committed immorality from me and lay upon her lovers, upon the Assyrians who approached her, 6 clothed in blue, governors and generals. Young and chosen, they were all horsemen riding upon horses. 7 And she gave her prostitution to them; they were all the choicest sons of the Assyrians, and she would defile herself to all whom she ran after in all her desires. 8 And she did not leave her immorality from Egypt; for they slept with her in her youth, and they deflowered her, and they poured out their prostitution upon her. 9 On account of this, I delivered her into the hands of her lovers, into the hands of the sons of the Assyrians, upon whom she laid. 10 They uncovered her shame; they took her sons and daughters and killed her by the sword, and she became a byword among women, and they did vengeance against her for the daughters. 11 And her sister Oholibah saw, and she corrupted her attack more than her, and her prostitution more than her sister’s prostitution. 12 She laid on the sons of the Assyrians, governors and generals who approached her, clothed in fine garments, horsemen riding upon horses, all choice youths. 13 And I saw that one of the two roads had become defiled. 14 And she increased her immorality, and she saw men portrayed upon the wall, images of the Chaldeans, portrayed with a pointed tool, 15 girded with embroidery upon their waists and dyed things upon their heads; the appearance of all of them was threefold, a likeness of the sons of the Chaldeans, of their country. 16 And she laid upon them with the sight of her eyes, and she sent messengers to them in the land of the Chaldeans. 17 And the sons of Babylon came to her in a lodging bed, and they were defiling her in her prostitution, and she was defiled by them, and her soul was distanced from them. 18 And she uncovered her prostitution and uncovered her shame, and my soul was distanced from her, the way my soul was distanced from her sister. 19 ‘But you increased your prostitution to bring to remembrance the day of your youth in which you prostituted in Egypt, 20 and you laid upon the Chaldeans, whose flesh was like that of donkeys, and their private parts like private parts of horses.[8] 21 And you considered the lawlessness of your youth, which you used to do in Egypt in your lodging, where the breasts of your youth were. 22 “‘On account of this, Oholibah,’ this is what the Lord says, ‘Look, I am rousing your lovers against you, those from whom your soul was distanced, and I will bring them against you from all around, 23 sons of Babylon and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, and Shoa, and Koa, and all the sons of the Assyrians with them, choice youths, all leaders and generals, threefold, and reputed horsemen upon horses. 24 And they all will come against you from the north: chariots and wheels with a crowd of people, shields and bucklers, and he will throw a guard against you all around. 25 And I will give judgment before their face, and they will punish you with their judgments. And I will give my zeal to you, and they will deal with you in the wrath of anger. They will remove your noses and your ears, and strike down those of you who are left by the sword. They will take your sons and your daughters, and a fire will devour those of you who are left. 26 And they will strip you of your clothing, and they will take the objects of your boasting. 27 And I will return your impieties from you, and your prostitution from the land of Egypt, and you will never lift your eyes upon them, and you will never remember Egypt anymore. 28 For that reason this is what the lord, the Lord, says: ‘Look, I am giving you into the hands of those you hate, from whom your soul was distant, 29 and they will deal with you in hatred and take away all your hard works and your labors, and you will be naked and ashamed, and the shame of your prostitution and your impiety will be uncovered. 30 did these things to you, when you prostituted yourself after the nations and you were defiling yourself with their desires. 31 You walked in the way of your sister, and I will give her cup into your hands. 32 This is what the Lord says: ‘You will drink the cup of your sister, deep and wide and full, to complete the drunkenness; 33 and you will be filled with faintness. And the cup of destruction is the cup of your sister; 34 and you will drink it, and I will turn back its feast and new moons, because I have spoken,’ says the Lord. 35 On account of this, this is what the Lord says: ‘Because you forgot me and you threw me away behind your body, you also, receive your ungodliness and your immorality!’” 36 And the Lord said to me, “Son of man, will you not judge Oholah and Oholibah? And you shall announce their lawless acts to them, 37 because they kept committing adultery, and blood was on their hands. They committed adultery with their devices, and they made their children, which they bore for me, pass through the fire. 38 Until they did even these things to me: they kept defiling my sanctuary and profaning my sabbaths. 39 And when they were slaughtering their children to their idols, they were also entering into my sanctuary to profane it. And that they were acting like this in the middle of my house! 40 And that for the men who would come from afar (to whom they sent messengers), and as soon as they came, immediately you would wash and paint your eyes, and put on decorations. 41 And you sat on a spread bed, and a table was prepared before its face! And in incense and olive oil they were cheerful. 42 And they would make music with a harmonious voice, and with men from a multitude of people who came from the desert, and they would place armlets upon their hands and a glorious crown upon their heads. 43 And I said, ‘Do they not commit adultery with these?’ And she prostituted herself, with the actions of a prostitute. 44 And they entered her the way they enter a prostitute woman; thus they entered Oholah and Oholibah to commit lawlessness. 45 And righteous men themselves will also punish them with the punishment of an adulteress, and with punishment of blood, because they are adulteresses, and blood is on their hands.” 46 This is what the lord, the Lord says: “Bring up a crowd against them, and place trouble and plundering among them, 47 and stone them with stones from the crowds, and cut them down by their swords; they will kill their sons and their daughters, and they will set their houses ablaze. 48 And I will turn back impiety from the land, and all the women will be disciplined, and they will never again act according to their impieties. 49 And your impiety will be placed against you, and you will receive the sins of your thoughts, and you will know that I am the Lord.”

24And the word of the Lord came to me on the ninth year on the tenth month on the tenth day of the month, saying, 2 “Son of man, write for yourself dailya beginning today, when the king of Babylon directed himself against Jerusalem, today, 3 and speak a parable against the rebelling house, and you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Set up the kettle and pour water into it, 4 and throw the portions into it, every good portion, leg and shoulder, stripped from the bones, 5 taken from choice livestock. And burn the bones underneath them.”’” They boiled, boiled, and its bones were kindled in the middle of it. 6 “On account of this, This is what the Lord says: ‘O bloody city, kettle in which there is rust, and the rust did not come out of it! I have placed its blood upon bare rock so as not to cover it. 9 On account of this, this is what the Lord says: ‘I will also enlarge the people 10 and increase the wood and light up the fire, in order that the meat may melt, and the sauce be reduced, 11 and it be set upon the coals, in order that it may be thoroughly burned, and its bronze grow hot, and its uncleanness melt in the middle and its rust come to an end. 12 And its great rust certainly will not come out of it. Its rust will be disgraced, 13 because you defiled yourself. And what if you should not be cleansed again until I will fulfill my wrath? 14 I, the Lord, have spoken, and it will happen, and I will do it. I will not distinguish or even show mercy; I will judge you according to your ways and according to your devices,’ says the Lord. ‘On account of this, I will judge you according to your bloodshed, and I will judge you according to your devices; the renowned one is impure, and plentiful for rebelling.’” 15 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 16 “Son of man, look; I will take the desire of your eyes from you in formation; you shall certainly not mourn or weep. 17 You will be a sighing of blood, of loins, of grief. Your hair will be not braided upon you or your shoes on your feet; you will certainly not be consoled by their lips or eat men’s bread.” 18 And I spoke to the people early in the day the way he commanded me in the evening. But your sons and your daughters whom you leave behind will fall by the sword. 22 And you will do the way I have done; you will not be consoled by their mouth, and you will not eat men’s bread. 23 And your hair will be upon your head, and your sandals on your feet, and you will certainly not mourn, and you will certainly not weep, and you will pine away in your injustices, and you will each console his brother. 24 And Ezekiel will become a wonder for you; when these things come you will do according to all things which youa did, and you will acknowledge that I am the Lord.”’” 25 “‘But you, O son of man, will it not be that in the day that I take the strength from them, the pride of their boasting, the desire of their eyes, and the pride of their life, their sons and their daughters, 26 that in that day the survivor will come to report to you in your ears? 27 In that day your mouth will be opened to the survivor. You will speak, and you shall certainly become deaf no longer, and you will be a wonder to them, and they will acknowledge that I am the Lord.”’”

25And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against the sons of Ammon, and prophesy against them; 3 and you shall say to the sons of Ammon, ‘Hear an oracle of the Lord; this is what the Lord says: “Because you rejoice against my sanctuary, that it was profaned, and against the land of Israel, that it was removed, and against the house of Judah, that they went into captivity, 4 on account of this, look, I am delivering you to the sons of Kedem for an inheritance, and they will encamp among you with their baggage, and they will place their habitations among you. They will eat your fruit and drink your fatness. 5 And I will deliver the city of Ammon to be a pasture for camels, and the sons of Ammon to be a pasture of sheep, and you will acknowledge that I am the Lord. 6 Because of these things,” says the Lord, “because you clapped your hand and stamped your foot and rejoiced from your soul against the land of Israel, 7 on account of this I will stretch out my hand against you, and I will deliver you for a spoil among the nations, and I will utterly destroy you from the peoples and destroy you from the territories by destruction, and you will acknowledge that I am the Lord.” 8 “‘This is what the Lord says: “Because Moab said: ‘Look; isn’t the house of Israel and of Judah just like all the nations? 9 On account of this, look, I am enfeebling the shoulder of Moab from its frontier cities, the choice land, the House of Jesimoth leading up from the city beside the sea. 10 I have given him the sons of Kedem besides the sons Ammon for an inheritance, so that there will be no remembrance of the sons of Ammon. 11 And I will take vengeance against Moab, and they will acknowledge that I am the Lord.’” 12 “‘This is what the Lord says: “Because of what Edom did when they avenged toward the house of Judah with vengeance, and they bore a grudge and took vengeance with judgment, 13 on account of this,” this is what the Lord says: “I will also stretch out my hand against Edom, and I will utterly destroy human and animal from it, and I will make it a desert, and those pursued from Teman will fall by the sword. 14 And I will take my vengeance against Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will act in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and they will acknowledge my vengeance,” says the Lord.’” 15 “‘On account of this, this is what the Lord says: “Because the foreigners avenged and raised up vengeance, rejoicing from their spirit to destroy until one,” 16 on account of this, this is what the Lord says: “Look, I will stretch out my hand against the foreigners, and I will utterly destroy the Cretans and destroy those who are left, who inhabit the seacoast. 17 And I will execute great vengeance among them, and they will acknowledge that I am the Lord, when I deliver my vengeance against them.”’”

26And this happened in the eleventh year on the first of the month: the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, because Tyre said against Jerusalem, ‘Good, it was crushed; the nations destroyed it. It reverted to me. She who was full was laid waste. 3 On account of this, this is what the Lord says: ‘Look; I am against you, Tyre, and I will bring many nations against you, as the sea arises with its waves. 4 And they will strike down the walls of Tyre and throw down your towers. And I will winnow her dust from her and establish her as a smooth rock. 5 She will be a drying-place for large dragnets in the middle of the sea, because I have spoken,’ says the Lord, ‘and she will become plunder for the nations, 6 and her daughters in the plain will be killed by a sword, and they will know that I am the Lord. 7 “For this is what the Lord says: ‘Look, Tyre, I am bringing against you Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the north (he is king of kings), with horses, and chariots, and horsemen, and a company of very many nations. 8 He will kill your daughters who are in the plain with a sword, and he will establish an outpost against you and build them around you, and he will make a palisade and a surrounding of weapons against you all around, and he will deliver his lances against you. 9 He will overthrow your walls and your towers by his swords. 10 Because of the multitude of his horses, their dust will cover you, and by reason of the sound of his horsemen and of the wheels of his chariots, your walls will be shaken, when he enters your gates as if entering a city from a plain. 11 They will trample all your streets with the hoofs of his horses. He will kill your people by the sword, and he will bring down the foundation of your strength upon the earth. 12 And he will plunder your power and despoil your possessions and overthrow your walls, and tear down your pleasant houses and throw your stones and your wood and your mud into the middle of your sea. 13 And he will destroy the abundance of your musicians, and the sound of your harps will certainly not be heard again. 14 And I will establish you as a smooth rock; you will be a drying place of large dragnets. You will certainly not be restored again, because I the Lord have spoken,’ says the Lord. 15 “Because this is what the lord, the Lord, says to Tyre: ‘Will the islands not be shaken by the sound of your fall, when the wounded sigh, when the sword is drawn in the middle of you? 16 And all the rulers from the nations of the sea will step down from their thrones and remove the headbands from their heads and take off their many-colored clothing. They will be amazed with amazement; they will sit down on the earth, and they will be frightened by their destruction, and they will sigh over you. 17 And they will take up a dirge over you, and they will say to you, “How have you been destroyed from the sea, O commendable city, who gives fear of herself to all her inhabitants?” 18 And the islands will be frightened by the day of your fall. 19 Because this is what the lord, the Lord says: ‘When I will make you a desolated city, like the uninhabited cities, when I bring you against the abyss, and much water will cover you. 20 And I will bring you down to those who descend into a pit, to a people of eternity, and I will cause you to dwell in the depths of the earth as an eternal desert, with those who descend into a pit, so that you are not inhabited nor do you rise up on the land of life. 21 I will deliver you to destruction, and you will no longer remain for eternity,’ says the lord, the Lord.”

27And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, even you, take up a dirge against Tyre, 3 and you shall say to Tyre that dwells at the entrance of the sea, to the market of the people from many islands: ‘This is what the Lord says to Tyre: “You said, ‘I have placed my beauty around myself. 4 In the heart of the sea for Beeleim your sons have wrapped you with beauty. 5 Cedar from Senir was fashioned for you; they took boards of timbers of cypress from Lebanon to make masts of fir for you. 6 They made your oars of Bashan; they made your sacred vessels of ivory, houses of wood of the islands of Chettein. 7 Fine linen with embroidery from Egypt became your bed-spread to put glory around you, and to cover you with blue and purple from the islands of Elishah, and they became your clothing. 8 And your rulers, the inhabitants of Sidon and Aradians became your rowers. Your wise, O Tyre, who were in you, these were your steersmen. 9 The elders of Byblos and their wise were in you; these confirmed your counsel. And all the ships of the sea and their rowers came to you, to the west of the west. 10 Persians and Lydians and Lybians were in your force. Your warrior men hung up bucklers and helmets in you. They gave your glory. 11 Sons of Aradians and your force were upon your walls. Guards were in your towers. They hung their quivers on your harbors all around. They completed your beauty. 12 The Carthaginians were your merchants because of the multitude of all your strength; they supplied your market with silver and gold and iron and tin and lead. 13 Greece, both the totality and the adjacent coasts, these were traveling to you with souls of people, and they supplied copper implements as your merchandise.” 14 ‘“From the house of Togarmah, horses and horsemen supplied your market. 15 The sons of the Rhodians were merchants; from the islands they made your merchandise abundant with ivory, and by the imports you repaid your wages, 16 humans as your merchandise because of a multitude of your sundries: myrrh and embroidered work from Tarshish. And Lamoth and Chorchor supplied your market. 17 Judah and the sons of Israel—these were your merchants in the sale of grain and perfume and cassia, and they supplied first honey and olive oil and pine resin into your sundries. 18 Damascus was your merchant from the abundance of all your power, wine from Helbon and wool from Miletus, and they supplied wine for your marketplace. 19 From Asal, worked iron and castings are among your sundries. 20 People of Dedan are your merchants, with choice livestock for chariots. 21 Arabia and all the rulers of Kedar, these are your merchants through your hand, among which they traded you camels and rams and lambs. 22 Merchants of Sheba and of Raamah, these are your merchants; they supplied your marketplace with the foremost of spices and of precious stones and gold. 23 Haran and Channa, these are your merchants. Asshur and Charman are your merchants, 24 bearing as commerce hyacinth and choice treasures bound by cords, and cypress-wood.” 25 ‘“Ships are merchants of yours in abundance among your sundries, and you were filled and very weighed down in the heart of the sea. 26 Your rowers led you among many waters, the south wind crushed you in the heart of the sea. 27 They were your powers, and your wages also of your sundries, and your rowers and your steersmen and your advisors and your sundry people from your sundries, and all your warrior men who are among you, and all your gathering in the middle of you—they will fall in the heart of the sea in the day of your fall. 28 Your steersmen will be frightened with fear at the crying of your voice, 29 and all the rowers and the mariners will step down from the ships, and the lookouts of the sea will stand upon the land, 30 and they will cry with pain over you with their voice, and shriek bitterly, and put earth on their head and spread ashes. 32 And their sons will take up a dirge over you, a lament of Tyre: 33 ‘How much of a wage did you find from the sea? You satisfied nations from your abundance, and you enriched all the kings of the earth from your sundries. 34 Now you have been broken in the sea; your sundry is in deep water, and all your assembly in the middle of you; all your rowers have fallen. 35 All those inhabiting the islands were gloomy over you, and their kings were amazed with amazement, and their face wept. 36 Merchants from the nations whistled at you; you have become a ruin, and you will no longer exist, for eternity.’”

28And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “And you, O son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Because your heart was lifted up and said, ‘I am a god. I have settled in the dwelling place of a god in the heart of the sea.’ But you are a human and not a god, and you made your heart as the heart of a god. 3 You are not wiser than Daniel, are you? Did wise people educate you with their skill? 4 Have you made for yourself power and gold and silver in your treasury, by your knowledge or your prudence? 5 You increased your power by your great knowledge and trade; your heart is lifted up because of your power.” 6 On account of this, this is what the Lord says: “Since you have made your heart as the heart of a god, 7 for this reason look, I am bringing foreigners against you, plagues from the nations, and they will unsheath their swords against you and against the beauty of your knowledge, and they will strew your beauty into destruction, 8 and they will bring you down, and you will die by the death of the wounded in the heart of the sea. 9 Will you indeed say, saying, ‘I am a god,’ before those who kill you? But you are a human and not a god! 10 You will die in the multitude of the uncircumcised by the hands of foreigners, because I have spoken,” says the Lord.’” 11 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 12 “Son of man, take up a dirge against the ruler of Tyre, and say to him, ‘This is what the lord, the Lord says: “You were a signeta and a crown of beauty. 13 You came to be in the delight of the orchard of God, you have bound on every precious stone, carnelian and topaz and emerald and garnet and sapphire and jasper and silver and gold and stone of Liguria and agate and amethyst and topaz and beryl and onyx; and you filled your treasure houses and your storehouses among you with gold.[9] 14 From the day you were created, I placed you with the cherub in the holy mountain of God; you came to be in the middle of fiery stones. 15 You came to be blameless in your days from the day you were created, until unrighteous things were found in you. 16 Because of the abundance of your merchandise, you filled your treasuries with lawlessness, and you sinned and were wounded from the mountain of God, and the cherub led you out of the middle of the fiery stones. 17 Your heart was lifted up by your beauty; your knowledge was destroyed with your beauty. On account of the abundance of your sins, I threw you upon the earth. I gave you to be an example before kings. 18 On account of the abundance of your sins and of the unrighteous acts of your merchandise, I profaned your temples. And I will bring out fire from the middle of you; this will devour you. And I will deliver you to be ashes upon your land before all who see you. 19 And all who know you among the nations will groan over you. You have become a ruin, and you will not remain any longer, for eternity.”’” 20 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 21 “Son of man, set your face against Sidon and prophesy against her, 22 and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Look, I am against you, Sidon, and I will be glorified in you, and you will know that I am the Lord when I do judgments in you, and I will be hallowed in you. 23 Blood and death will be in your streets, and those wounded by swords will fall in you all around you, and they will know that I am the Lord. 24 And in the house of Israel there will no longer be a bitter thorn or a painful thorn from those around them who dishonor them,a and they will know that I am the Lord.” 25 This is what the lord, the Lord says: “I will also gather Israel from the nations where they were scattered, and I will be hallowed among them, and before the peoples and the nations. 26 And they will dwell upon their land which I have given to my servant Jacob, and they will dwell on it in hope, and build houses, and plant vineyards, and dwell in hope, when I will execute judgment among all who dishonor them, among those all around them, and they will know that I am the Lord their God and the God of their fathers.”’”

29In the twelfth year in the tenth month on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and prophesy against him and against all of Egypt, 3 and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Look, I am against Pharaoh, the great dragon that is seated in the middle of its rivers, saying, ‘The rivers are mine, and I made them. 4 But I will place snares in your jawbones, and I will glue the fish of your river onto your fins, and I will bring you up from the middle of your River; 5 and I will quickly throw you and all the fish of your river down. You will fall on the face of a plain, and you will certainly not be gathered, and you will certainly not be covered. I have given you for food to the beasts of the land and to the birds of the heavens. 6 And all the inhabitants of Egypt will know that I am the Lord, because you became a rod of reed for the house of Israel. 7 Because he seized you by their hand; you were crushed. And when every hand struck against them and when they rested upon you, you were crushed, and you shattered all their loins.” 8 ‘“On account of this, this is what the Lord says: “Look, I am bringing the sword against you, and I will destroy humans and animals from you, 9 and the land of Egypt will be destroyed and deserted, and they will know that I am the Lord, because you say, ‘The rivers are mine and I made them. 10 On account of this, look, I am against you and against all your rivers, and I will deliver up the land of Egypt to desolation, sword, and destruction from Migdol and Syene and as far as the borders of the Ethiopians. 11 No foot of a human shall pass through it, and no foot of livestock shall pass through it, and it will be uninhabited for forty years. 12 And I will make its land a ruin in the middle of a deserted land, and its cities will be in the middle of deserted cities for forty years, and I will scatter Egypt among the nations, and scatter them among the territories.” 13 This is what the Lord says: “After forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the nations where they were scattered, 14 and I will return the captivity of the Egyptians, and I will make them dwell in the land of Pathros, in the land from which they were taken, and its power will be low 15 in comparison to all the powers. It will never again be lifted up over the nations, and I will make them few so that they will not be many among the nations. 16 And for the house of Israel they will no longer be a hope that recalls lawlessness, when they follow after them, and they will know that I am the Lord.”’” 17 And this happened in the twenty-seventh year, on the first day of the first month: the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has made his force labor with hard labor against Tyre. Every head has become bald and every shoulder bare, but there was no reward for him and his force against Tyre, even for the labor with which they labored against it. 19 This is what the lord, the Lord, says: ‘Look, I am giving the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will plunder its plunder and will despoil its spoils, and it will be a reward for his force. 20 For his ministry which he served against Tyre, I have given him the land of Egypt.’ This is what the lord, the Lord says: 21 ‘In that day a horn will rise up for all the house of Israel, and I will give you an open mouth in the middle of them, and they will know that I am the Lord.’”

30And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Oh! Oh, day! 3 For the day of the Lord is near; it will be the end of the nations. 4 And a sword will come against the Egyptians, and there will be trouble in the land of Ethiopia, and the wounded will collapse in Egypt, and its foundations will collapse. 5 Persians and Cretans and Lydians and Libyans and all the mixed people and some of the sons of my covenant will fall by the sword in it. 6 And the supports of Egypt will fall, and the insolence of its strength will be brought down from Migdol as far as Syene. They will fall by the sword in it,” says the Lord. 7 And it will be laid waste in the middle of deserted territories, and their cities will be in the middle of deserted cities, 8 and they will know that I am the Lord, when I place a fire against Egypt and all those who come to aid it are broken. 9 In that day messengers will come hastening to destroy Ethiopia, and there will be trouble among them in the day of Egypt, for look; it has come! 10 “This is what the lord, the Lord, says: ‘I will also destroy the multitude of the Egyptians through the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, 11 of him and his people. They are plagues, sent from the nations to destroy the land, and they all will unsheathe their swords against Egypt, and the land will be filled with the wounded. 12 And I will make their rivers deserted, and I will destroy the land and its fullness by the hands of foreigners.’ I, the Lord, have spoken. 13 “Because this is what the lord, the Lord, says: ‘I will also destroy the great ones from Memphis, and the rulers of Memphis from the land of Egypt, and they will exist no longer. 14 And I will destroy the land of Pathros, and place fire on Tanis, and execute vengeance in Diospolis, 15 and pour out my anger on Sais the power of Egypt, and destroy the abundance of Memphis, 16 and I will place fire upon Egypt, and Syene will be anxious with anxiety, and in Diospolis there will be a breach, and the waters will pour through. 17 The youth of Heliopolisa and of Boubastos will fall by the sword, and the women will go into captivity. 18 And in Tahpanhes the day will grow dark, when I crush the staffs of Egypt there, and the insolence of her strength will perish there, and a cloud will cover her, and her daughters will be led away as captives. 19 And I will execute judgment in Egypt, and they will know that I am the Lord.’” 20 And this happened in the eleventh year in the first month, on the seventh day of the month: the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 21 “Son of man, I broke the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and look! It has not been bound up to be given healing, to be given a bandage on it, to be given strength to lay hold of the sword. 22 On account of this, this is what the lord, the Lord, says: ‘Look, I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and I will crush his strong and stretching arms to pieces, and throw his sword down from his hand, 23 and scatter Egypt among the nations, and scatter them among territories. 24 And I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and place my sword in his hand, and he will bring it against Egypt and plunder its plunder, and despoil its spoils. 25 And I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon; the arms of Pharaoh will fall, and they will know that I am the Lord when I place my sword into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he stretches it against the land of Egypt. 26 And I will scatter Egypt into the nations, and I will scatter them into the territories, and they will all know that I am the Lord.’”

31And this happened in the eleventh year in the third month, on the first day of the month: the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and his multitude, ‘To what have you likened yourself in your exaltation? 3 Look, Assyria was a cypress in Lebanon, and fair in offshoots and lofty in size; his power came to be into the middle of clouds. 4 Water nourished him; the abyss raised him; she gathered her rivers around his plants and sent her systems into all woods of the plain. 5 On account of this, his stature was exalted above all the woods of the plain, and his branches were spread because of abundant water. 6 All the birds of the heavens nested in his shoots, and all the wild beasts of the plain gave birth under his branches; every multitude of nations dwelt in his shade. 7 And he became beautiful in his exaltation on account of the abundance of his branches, because his roots came to be in much water. 8 And such cypresses were in the garden of God, and no pines were comparable to his offshoots, and no silver firs were comparable to his branches. 9 on account of the abundance of his branches, and the trees of the garden of God’s delight were jealous of him. 10 “On account of this, this is what the Lord says: ‘Because you became great in size, and you established your head in the middle of clouds, and I saw when he was exalted, 11 and I delivered him into the hands of a ruler of nations, and he worked his destruction. 12 And foreign plagues from the nations destroyed him, and they cast him down against the hills. His branches fell in all the ravines, and its boughs were crushed in every plain of the land, and all the people of the nations came down from their protection, and they dashed him to the ground. 13 All the birds of the heavens rested on its ruin, and all the wild beasts of the field came beside its boughs, 14 so that also all the trees by the water should not be lifted up in their height. And they gave their top into the middle of clouds, and they did not set them in their height toward them. All those that drink water, they all were given to death, into the depth of the earth, in the middle of the sons of humans, with those who descend into the pit. 15 “This is what the lord, the Lord, says: ‘In that day he descended into Hades, the abyss lamented him, and I stopped up her rivers and hindered an abundance of water, and Lebanon became saddened over him; all the trees of the plain gave out over it. 16 The nations were shaken by the sound of his fall, when I was bringing him down into Hades with those who descend into the pit; and all the trees of delight, and the choice ones of Lebanon, all that drink water, were consoling him in the land. 17 For even they descended with him into Hades, among those wounded by the sword, and his seed who were dwelling under his shade were destroyed in the middle of their life. 18 “‘To whom are you likened? Descend and be brought down with the trees of delight into the depth of the earth. You will sleep in the middle of the uncircumcised, with those wounded by the sword. So is Pharaoh and the multitude of his strength,’ says the Lord, the Lord.”

32And this happened in the twelfth year, in the tenth month, on the first day of the month: the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, take up a dirge over Pharaoh king of Egypt, and you shall say to him, ‘You have become like a lion of the nations, and like a sea monster that is in the sea, and you butted horns with your streams and stirred up water with your feet, and you trampled your rivers. 3 This is what the Lord says: ‘I will cast nets of many peoples over you, and I will bring you up with my fish-hook, 4 and I will stretch you out upon the land. Plains will be filled with you, and I will set all the birds upon you, and satisfy all the wild beasts of all the earth. 5 And I will give your flesh upon the mountains and satiate them from your blood. 6 And the land will be given to drink from your excrement, from your abundance upon the mountains. I will fill ravines from you. 7 And I will cover up the heavens when you are extinguished, and I will darken its stars; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall certainly not shine its light. 8 All that shine light in the heavens will grow dark over you, and I will give darkness over the land,’ says the lord, the Lord. 9 ‘And I will provoke the heart of many peoples to anger, when I lead your captivity into the nations, into a land which you do not know. 10 And many nations will be appalled over you, and their kings will be amazed by amazement when my sword flies against their faces, when they receive their fall from the day of your fall. 11 Because this is what the Lord says: ‘A sword of the king of Babylon will come upon you 12 with the swords of giants; and I will overthrow your strength. They are all plagues from the nations, and they will destroy Egypt’s insolence, and all its power will be crushed. 13 And I will destroy all its livestock from abundant water, and no human foot will trouble it anymore, and no footprint of livestock will trample it. 14 So then their waters will be quiet, and their rivers will go like oil,’ says the Lord. 15 ‘When I make Egypt into a ruin, and the land is deserted with its fullness, when I scatter all those who dwell in it, and they will know that I am the Lord. 16 It is a lament, and you will lament it, and the daughters of the nations will lament it. They will lament it over Egypt and over all its strength,’ says the lord, the Lord.” 17 And this happened in the twelfth year, of the first month, on the fifteenth of the month: the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, sing a dirge over Egypt’s strength, and the nations will bring down its daughters dead into the depth of the earth, to those who descend into the pit. 20 They will fall with him in the middle of those wounded by the sword, and all his strength will sleep. 21 ‘And the giants will say to you, ‘Come in the depth of clamor! Than whom are you mightier? And descend and sleep with the uncircumcised in the middle of those wounded by swords! 22 Assyria is there, and all his company, all the wounded were delivered up there,a and their grave is in the depth of the pit, and his company was all around his grave, all those wounded who fell by the sword, 23 who give their terror over the land of life. 24 Elam is there, and all his power all around his grave, all the wounded who fell by the sword, and who descend uncircumcised into the depth of the land, who have established their fear over life, and they received their torment with those who descend into the pit 25 in the middle of the wounded. 26 Meshech and Tubal were delivered up there, and all their strength all around its grave, all his wounded, all the uncircumcised wounded by the sword, who have given their terror over life. 27 And they slept with the giants, who had fallen from eternity, who descended into Hades with weapons of war, and placed their swords under their heads, and their lawless acts came upon their bones, because they terrified everyone in their life. 28 And you will sleep in the middle of the uncircumcised with those wounded by the sword.[10] 29 The rulers of Assyria were delivered up there, those who give its strength for a wound by the sword. They slept with the wounded, with those who descend into the pit. 30 The rulers of the north are there, all generals of Assyria, who descend slain; they slept with their fear and their strength with the uncircumcised, with those wounded by the sword, and they bore their torment with those who descend into the pit. 31 King Pharaoh will see them and be consoled over all their strength,’ says the lord, the Lord. 32 ‘Because I have established his terror upon life, and he will sleep in the middle of the uncircumcised, with those wounded by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude with him,’ says the lord, the Lord.”

33And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, speak to the sons of your people and you shall say to them: ‘As for any land upon which I bring the sword, and if the people of the land take one person from them, and they establish him as a watchman for themselves, 3 and he sees the sword coming upon the land and he sounds the trumpet and sounds the alarm for the people, 4 and hearing the sound of the trumpet with hearing, and does keep guard, and the sword comes and falls upon him, his blood will be upon his head. 5 For although he heard the sound of the war-trumpet, he did not take heed. His blood will be upon him, but he that listened delivered his life. 6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not sound the trumpet, and the people do not listen, and the sword comes and takes a soul from them, this one was taken on account of his own lawlessness, and I will require the blood from the hand of the watchman. 7 And you, O son of man, I have established you as a watchman for the house of Israel, and you may hear an oracle from my mouth. 8 When I say to the sinner, ‘You shall be put to death by death,’ and you should not speak that the impious keep from his way, the lawless one himself will die by his lawlessness, but I will require his blood from your hand. 9 But you, if you announce to the ungodly to turn away from his way, and he does not turn away from his way, he will die by his impiety, but you will deliver your own soul.” 10 “And you, son of man, say to the house of Israel: ‘So you have spoken, saying, “Our deception and our lawless acts are upon us, and in them we are wasting away; and how shall we live?” 11 Say to them, ‘“As I live,” thus the Lord says, “I do not wish the death of the impious, but that the ungodly turn back from his way and live. In turning, turn away from your way. Why should you die, O house of Israel?” 12 Say to the sons of your people, “A righteous person’s righteousness will certainly not deliver him in that day he is led astray, and an impious person’s lawlessness will certainly not mistreat him in that day he turns away from his lawlessness, and the righteous will certainly not be able to be saved. 13 When I say to the righteous, ‘This one trusts in his righteousness,’ and should he commit lawlessness, none of his righteousness will be remembered in his injustice that he committed; he will die in it. 14 But when I say to the ungodly, ‘By death you will be put to death,’ and should he turn away from his sins and do justice and righteousness, 15 and restore what is pledged and return loot, walk in the ordinances of life so as not to commit unrighteousness, he will live by life and shall not die. 16 None of his sins which he committed will be remembered; because he did justice and righteousness, he will live by them. 17 And the sons of your people will say, ‘The way of the Lord is not straight,’ and this way of theirs is not straight. 18 When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and he commits lawlessness, he will also die by them, 19 but when the sinner turns away from his lawlessness and does justice and righteousness, he will live by these. 20 And this is what you said: ‘The way of the Lord is not straight.’ I will judge each of you in his ways, O house of Israel.”’” 21 And this happened in the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the fifth of the month, of our captivity, an escapee came to me from Jerusalem, saying, “The city has been conquered.” 22 And the hand of the Lord came upon me in the evening before he came. And he opened my mouth until he came to me early in the day, and when my mouth was opened, it was no longer shut up. 23 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 24 “Son of man, those who inhabit the deserted cities on the land of Israel will say, ‘Abraham was one person and he possessed the land, but we are more; the land has been given to us for a possession. 25 On account of this, say to them, 27 ‘This is what the lord, the Lord, says: “As I live, certainly those in the deserted cities will fall by swords, and those upon the face of the plain will be given to the beasts of the field for food, and I will kill those in the fortified places and those in the caves by death. 28 And I will make the land deserted, and the insolence of its strength will be destroyed, and the mountains of Israel will be laid waste on account of there being no one passing through. 29 And they will know that I am the Lord, and I will make their land deserted, and it will be laid waste on account of all their abominations which they have done.” 30 But you, son of man, the sons of your people who are speaking about you beside the walls and in the gates of the houses and they each say to his brother, saying, ‘Let us go together and hear the things that come from the Lord. 31 They come to you, as a people goes together, and sit before you and hear your words, and they will certainly not do these things because a lie is in their mouth, and their heart is after what is polluted. 32 And you are becoming the sound of a sweet-voiced harmonious harp to them, and they hear your words, but they will certainly not do them. 33 But at the time when it comes they will say, ‘Look, it has come!’ And they will know that a prophet was in the middle of them.”

34And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy and say to the shepherds, ‘This is what the lord, the Lord, says: “O shepherds of Israel, should shepherds feed themselves? Should not shepherds feed the sheep? 3 Look! You consume the milk and wear the wool and slaughter the fatling, and you do not feed my sheep! 4 You did not strengthen the feeble, or revive the ill or bind the crushed or return the stray, or seek the perishing, and you oppressed the strong with hardship. 5 And my sheep were scattered because there were no shepherds, and they became for food for all the beasts of the field. 6 And my sheep were scattered in every mountain and on every high hill and scattered on the face of the land, and there was no one searching for them or returning them.” 7 On account of this, O shepherds, hear an oracle of the Lord: 8 “As I live,” says the lord, the Lord, “if indeed because my sheep have become plunder, and my sheep became food for all the beasts of the plain because there were no shepherds, and the shepherds did not seek out my sheep, and the shepherds tended themselves but did not tend my sheep,” 9 because of this, shepherds, 10 this is what the lord, the Lord, says: “Look, I am against the shepherds, and I shall search for my sheep from their hands, and I shall turn them back from shepherding my sheep, and the shepherds will no longer feed them, and I shall deliver my sheep from their mouth, and the shepherds will no longer feed them.” 11 ‘“For that reason, this is what the Lord says: “Look, I shall seek out my sheep and watch over them. 12 Just as the shepherd seeks his flock on the day when there is darkness and a cloud in the middle of the separated sheep, so I will seek out my sheep and drive them away from every place they were scattered on the day of cloud and darkness. 13 And I will bring them out of the nations and gather them from the territories and lead them into their land, and will feed them on the mountains of Israel and in the valleys and in every dwelling place of the land. 14 I will tend them in a good pasture, in Israel’s high mountain. And their sheepfolds will be there, and they will sleep, and there they will rest in good delight, and they will feed in a rich pasture upon Israel’s mountains. 15 I shall tend my sheep, and I shall give them rest, and they will know that I am the Lord.” This is what the lord, the Lord, says: 16 “I shall seek the perishing and return the stray and bind up the crushed and strengthen the ones coming to an end and guard the strong and tend them with justice.” 17 And you sheep, this is what the lord, the Lord, says: “Look, I shall bring judgment between sheep and sheep, rams and he-goats. 18 And was it not enough for you that you were grazing the good pasture and trampling the rest of your pasture with your feet, and drinking the stagnant water and stirring up the rest with your feet? 19 And my sheep were grazing on the tramplings of your feet, and they were drinking water troubled by your feet!” 20 “‘On account of this, this is what the lord, the Lord, says: “Look, I will judge between strong sheep and between weak sheep. 21 You kept pushing upon your ribs and shoulders, and you kept butting with your horns, and you were afflicting all the ones coming to an end. 22 But I shall save my sheep, and they will never again become plunder, and I shall judge between ram against ram. 23 And I shall raise up one shepherd over them, and he is shepherding them: my servant David; and he shall be their shepherd, 24 and I, the Lord, shall become their God, and David a ruler in the middle of them; I, the Lord, have spoken. 25 And I shall make a covenant of peace with David, and I shall remove evil beasts from the land, and they will dwell in the desert, and they will sleep in the thickets, 26 and I will establish them all around my mountain, and I will give the rain to you, a rain of blessing. 27 And the trees in the plain will give their fruit, and the land will give its wealth, and they will dwell upon their land in hope of peace, and they will know that I am the Lord, when I break their yoke, and I will deliver them from the hand of those who enslaved them. 28 And they will never again become plunder for the nations, and the beasts of the land will no longer eat them, but they will dwell in hope, and no one will frighten them. 29 And I will raise up a plant of peace for them, and they will no longer be perishing by a famine on the land, and they will never again bear the nations’ reproach. 30 And they will know that I am the Lord their God, and they, the house of Israel, are my people,” says the Lord. 31 “You are my sheep, and the sheep of my flock, and I am the Lord your God,” says the lord, the Lord.’”

35And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, turn your face against Mount Seir and prophesy to it, 3 and say, ‘This is what the lord, the Lord, says: “Look, I am against you, Mount Seir, and I shall stretch out my hand against you and make you into a desert, and you will be deserted; 4 and I will make your cities a desert, and you will be deserted, and you will know that I am the Lord. 5 Because you were eternally hostile and laid in wait in treachery for the house of Israel by the hand of enemies, by the sword in a time of injustice at the last,” 6 on account of this, “As I live,” says the lord, the Lord, “surely you sinned unto blood, and blood will pursue you. 7 And I shall make Mount Seir deserted, and it will be deserted, and I will destroy humans and livestock from it, 8 and I will fill your hills and ravines with the wounded, and in all your plains those wounded by the sword will fall among you. 9 I will make you an eternal desert, and your cities will never be inhabited again, and you will know that I am the Lord.” 10 Because you say, “Two nations and two territories will be mine, and I will inherit them,” yet the Lord is there; 11 on account of this, “As I live,” says the Lord, “I will also deal with you according to your enmity, and I will be made known to you, when I judge you, 12 and you will know that I am the Lord. I have heard the sound of your blasphemies, because you said, ‘The mountains of Israel are deserted, they have been given to us for food,’ 13 but you boasted against me with your mouth. I heard it!” 14 This is what the Lord says, “When all the land is merry,a I will make you deserted. 15 You will be a desert, Mount Seir, and all Edom will also be consumed. You will know that I am the Lord their God.”’”

36“But you, son of man, prophesy against the mountains of Israel, and say to the mountains of Israel, ‘Hear an oracle of the Lord. 2 This is what the lord, the Lord, says: “Because of what the enemy said against you: ‘Good! Eternal deserted things have become a possession for us!’” 3 “On account of this, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the lord, the Lord, says: “Because you are dishonored and you are hated by those all around you so that you have become a possession for the remaining nations, and you arose as a byword on the tongue and a reproach for nations,” 4 on account of this, mountains of Israel, hear an oracle of the Lord! This is what the Lord says to the mountains and the hills and the ravines and the torrents and the deserted places and destroyed places and abandoned cities: they have also become plunder and a trampling by the remaining nations on all around. 5 On account of this, this is what the lord, the Lord, says: “If indeed I spoke in the fire of my anger against the remaining nations and against all Edom, because they took my landb for a possession with cheer, dishonoring souls to destroy it by plundering.” 6 “On account of this, prophesy against the land of Israel, and say to the mountains and the hills and the ravines and the valleys: ‘This is what the Lord says: “Look, I spoke in my jealousy and in my anger because you bore the reproach of nations. 7 On account of this, I will lift up my hand against the nations all around you. They will receive their dishonor. 8 But you, mountains of Israel, my people will devour your grapes and fruit because they are hoping to come. 9 Because, look, I am against you, and I will look upon you, and you will be prepared and sown. 10 And I will multiply people upon you, and all the house of Israel to completion, and the cities will be inhabited, and the desolate city will be restored. 11 And I will multiply humans and livestock upon you, and I will cause you to dwell as in your beginning, and I will make you well just as in your former times, and you will know that I am the Lord. 12 And I will birth people upon you, my people Israel, and they will inherit you, and you will be a possession for them, and you shall no longer continue to be made childless by them.” 13 This is what the lord, the Lord says: “Because they said to you, ‘You are a devourer of humans, and you were made childless by your nation,’ 14 on account of this, you will no longer eat humans, and you will not make your nation childless again,” says the lord, the Lord. 15 “And the dishonor of nations will no longer be heard upon you, and you shall not carry the reproach of peoples,” says the lord, the Lord.’” 16 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 17 “Son of man, the house of Israel dwelt upon their land, and they defiled it by their way and their idols and their impurities, and their way became before my face like the impurity of the woman sitting apart. 18 And I poured out my wrath against them 19 and scattered them among the nations and drove them away among the territories. I judged them according to their way and according to their sin. And they entered among the nations where they entered there, and they profaned my holy name when they said, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and they have come from his land. 21 And I had pity on them on account of my holy name, which the house of Israel profaned among the nations wherever they entered there. 22 “On account of this, say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord says: “I shall act not for you, O house of Israel, but rather on account of my holy name, which you profaned among the nations where you went there. 23 And I shall sanctify my great name which was profaned among the nations which you profaned in the middle of them. And the nations will know that I am the Lord, when I am sanctified by before their eyes.[11] 24 And I shall take you from the nations and gather you from all the lands, and I will lead you into your land. 25 And I shall sprinkle clean water upon you, and you will be cleansed from all your impurities and from all your idols, and I will cleanse you. 26 And I shall give you a new heart and establish a new spirit in you and remove the heart made of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I shall establish my spirit in you, and I shall work so that you walk in my duties and keep my judgments and do them. 28 And you will dwell upon the land which I gave to your fathers, and you will be my people, and I will be your God. 29 And I shall save you from all your impurities, and I shall summon the grain 30 and multiply it and I shall not give hunger upon you, and I will multiply the tree’s fruit and the field’s produce, so that you do not receive the reproach of famine among the nations. 31 And you will remember your evil ways and your practices which are not good, and you will be angry before their face because of your transgressions and because of their abominations. 32 I will act not on account of you,” says the lord, the Lord. “It is known to you; be ashamed and turn from your ways, O house of Israel.” 33 This is what Adonai the Lord says: “On the day that I will cleanse you from all your transgressions, I also will settle the cities, and deserted cities will be restored. 34 And the destroyed land will be worked, instead of being destroyed, in the eyes of all who pass by. 35 And they will say, ‘That land became destroyed like a garden of delight, and the deserted and blotted out and utterly destroyed cities sat secure. 36 And the nations which were left behind around you will know that I, the Lord, built what was torn down and planted what was removed. I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will do it.” 37 “‘This is what Adonai the Lord says: “Yet for this I will be sought for the house of Israel: to make them. I will multiply them, humans like sheep, 38 like holy sheep, like the sheep of Jerusalem in its festivals, so the deserted cities will be full of humans like sheep, and they will know that I am the Lord.”’”

37And the hand of the Lord came upon me, and the Lord led me out by the spiritb and placed me in the middle of the plain, and this was full of human bones. 2 And he led me to them around in a circle, and look! Very many on the face of the plain, very dry. 3 And he said to me, “Son of man, will these bones live?” And I said, “O Lord, you know these things.” 4 And he said to me, “Prophesy against these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 5 This is what the Lord says to these bones: “Look, I am bringing a living spirit into you, 6 and I will place tendons upon you, and bring flesh upon you, and stretch out skin over you, and place my spirit into you, and you will live and know that I am the Lord.”’” 7 And I prophesied just as he commanded me. And this happened when I prophesied: and look! An earthquake! And the bones each drew near to its joint. 8 And I looked, and look, tendons and flesh were growing upon them, and skin was coming up over them, and there was no spirit in them. 9 And he said to me, “Prophesy to the spirit! Prophesy, son of man, and say to the spirit, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Come from the four winds, and blow into these corpses and they will live.”’” 10 And I prophesied just as he commanded me, and the spirit entered into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, a very great company. 11 And the Lord spoke to me, saying, “Son of man, these bones are all the house of Israel, and they say, ‘Our bones have become withered; our hope has been destroyed; we have perished. 12 On account of this, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Look, I am opening your tombs, and I shall bring you up from your tombs and lead you into the land of Israel, 13 and you will know that I am the Lord when I open your graves, that I might bring my people up from the graves. 14 And I will place my spirit into you, and you will live, and I will set you upon your land, and you will know that I am the Lord. I have spoken and will do it,” says the Lord.’” 15 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 16 “Son of man, take for yourself a rod and write on it, ‘Judah and the sons of Israel who are joined to him.’ And take for yourself a second rod and you write upon it, ‘For Joseph,’ a rod of Ephraim and all the sons of Israel who have been added to him. 17 And you shall join them together to one another for yourself, to bind them into one rod, and they shall be in your hand. 18 And this will happen: when the sons of your people say to you, ‘Will you not proclaim to us what these things are to you? 19 And you will say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Look, I shall take the tribe of Joseph, which is by the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel joined to him, and I shall establish them over the tribe of Judah, and they shall be one rod in the hand of Judah.” 20 And the rods upon which you wrote upon them shall be in your hand before them. 21 And you shall say to them, ‘This is what the lord, the Lord says: “Look, I am taking all the house of Israel from the middle of the nations where they entered there, and I shall gather them from all those surrounding them and lead them into the land of Israel. 22 And I shall make them a nation in my land and in the mountains of Israel, and they will have one ruler, and they will no longer be two nations, and no longer divided into two kingdoms, 23 that they should never again be defiled by their idols. And I will rescue them from all their transgressions by which they sinned, and I will cleanse them, and they will be a people for me, and I, the Lord, will be God for them. 24 And my servant David will be ruler in the middle of them, he will be one shepherd of all, because they will walk in my ordinances and keep my judgments and do them. 25 And they will dwell upon their land, which I have given to my servant Jacob, there where their fathers dwelt, and they will dwell upon it, and my servant David will be ruler for eternity. 26 And I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an eternal covenant with them, and I will place my sanctuary in the middle of them for eternity. 27 And my habitation will be among them, and I will be God for them, and they will be my people. 28 And the nations will know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them, when my sanctuary is in the middle of them for eternity.”’”

38And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against Gog and the land of Magog, ruler of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him, 3 and say to him, ‘This is what the lord, the Lord says: “Look, I am ruler of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. 4 And I shall gather you and your whole force, horses and horsemen all clothed in breast plates, a great company, with bucklers and helmets and swords, 5 Persians and Ethiopians and Libyans, all with helmets and bucklers, 6 Gomer and all those around him, the house of Togarmah from the furthest north and all those around him, and many nations will be with you. 7 Be ready! Ready yourself, you and all your company, those gathered with you, and you shall be a guard for me. 8 From many days it will be prepared, and at the end of years it will come and arrive into the land, returned from the sword, when they are gathered from many nations against the land of Israel which had become entirely deserted, and this one has come out from nations, and they all will dwell at peace. 9 And you will arise like rain, and he will come like a cloud to cover the land, and there will be you and all those around you, and many nations with you.” 10 This is what the lord, the Lord says: “But this will happen in that day: words will arise upon your heart, and you will calculate an evil account. 11 And you will say, ‘I shall arise upon a rejected land; I will come upon those resting in rest and dwelling at peace, all inhabiting a land in which there is no wall or bolted doors—and gates do not exist for them 12 to capture plunder and despoil their spoils, to turn my hand to the deserted city which was established, and against a nation gathered from many nations, who had made acquisitions, dwelling upon the navel of the earth. 13 Sheba and Dedan and Carthaginian merchants and all their villages will say to you, ‘Do you come to plunder for plunder and to despoil spoil? Did you gather your company to take silver and gold, to carry away property, to despoil spoil?’”’” 14 “On account of this, prophesy, son of man, and say to Gog, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Will you not be roused in that day when my people Israel dwells at peace? 15 And you will come from your place from the furthest north, and many nations with you, all riders of horses, a great company, and a great force, 16 and you will arise against my people Israel like a cloud covers the land, this will happen at the last of the days, and I will bring you up against my land so that all the nations should know me when I am sanctified among you before them.” 17 This is what the lord, the Lord says to Gog: “You are the one about whom I spoke before the earlier days through the hand of my servants, the prophets of Israel in those days and years, to lead you against them. 18 And this will happen in that day, in the day which Gog comes against the land of Israel,” says the lord, the Lord. “My anger will arise, 19 and my jealousy. In the fire of my wrath I said, ‘Certainly,a in that day there will be a great earthquake upon the land of Israel, 20 and the fish of the sea and the birds of the heavens and the wild beasts of the plain, and all the creeping things that creep on the earth, and all the humans who are on the face of the earth will be shaken from the face of the Lord; and the mountains will be shattered, and the ravines will fall, and every wall will fall upon the earth. 21 And I shall summon even every fear against it,” says the Lord, “A sword of a person will be against his brother. 22 And I will judge him by death and blood and overwhelming rain and hailstones, and I shall rain fire and sulfur upon him and upon all those with him, and upon many nations with him. 23 And I will be exalted and hallowed and glorified and known before many nations, and they will know that I am the Lord.”’”

39“But you, O son of man, prophesy against Gog and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Look, I am against you, Gog, ruler of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal; 2 and I will gather you and guide you down, and I will raise you up upon the ultimate north, and I will bring you up on the mountains of Israel. 3 And I will destroy your bow from your left hand and your arrows from your right hand and overthrow you 4 on the mountains of Israel. And you will fall, you and all those around you, and the nations with you will be given to a multitude of birds. I have given you to every winged creature and to all the beasts of the plain to be devoured. 5 You will fall on the face of the plain, because I have spoken,” says the Lord. 6 “And I will send fire upon Gog, and the islands will be inhabited in peace, and they will know that I am the Lord. 7 And my holy name will be made known in the middle of my people Israel, and my holy name will no longer be profaned, and the nations will know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. 8 Look, it has come, and you will know that it will be,” says the lord, the Lord. “This is the day of which I have spoken. 9 And those who inhabit the cities of Israel will come out, and they will burn the weapons, bucklers and spears and bows and arrows and hand-rods and lances, and they will burn among them with fire seven years. 10 But they shall take no trees from the plain, or even cut them down from the woods; rather they will burn the weapons with fire, and they will plunder those who plundered them, and they will despoil those who despoiled them,” says the Lord. 11 “‘And this will happen in that day: I will give Gog a famous place, a memorial in Israel, the cemetery of those who come up to the sea. And they will enclose the mouth of the ravine, 12 aand there they will bury Gog and all his multitude, and it will be called The Te, The Cemetery of Gog. 13 And the house of Israel will bury them so that the land should be cleansed after seven months. Gather together from all around to my sacrifice which I have slaughtered for you, a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, and you shall eat meat and drink blood! 18 You shall eat the flesh of giants, and drink the blood of the rulers of the earth, rams and calves and he-goats, and the calves are all fattened. 19 And you will eat fat to satiety, and drink blood to drunkenness, from my sacrifice which I slaughtered for you. 20 And you will be satisfied at my table, by horse and rider and giant and every human warrior,’” says the Lord. 21 “And I will establish my glory among you, and all the nations will see my judgment which I executed, and my hand which I laid upon them. 22 And the house of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God, from this day and henceforth. 23 And all the nations will know that the house of Israel were taken prisoner on account of their sins, because they rejected me, and I turned my face away from them, and I delivered them into the hands of their enemies, and they all fell by the sword. 24 I dealt with them according to their uncleannesses and according to their transgressions, and I turned my face away from them.” 25 “‘On account of this, this is what the lord, the Lord says: “Now I will turn back the captivity among Jacob and show mercy upon the house of Israel and be jealous on account of my holy name. 26 And they will receive their own dishonor and injustice which they practiced unjustly when they are settled upon their land at peace, and there will be no one who frightens them. 27 After I return them from the nations, and gather them from the territories of the nations, I will also be hallowed by them before the nations. 28 And they will know that I am the Lord their God, when I appear to them among the nations. 29 And I will no longer turn my face away from them, because I poured out my anger upon the house of Israel,” says the lord, the Lord.”’”

40And this happened in the twenty-fifth year of our captivity, in the first month, on the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after the city was taken. On that day, the hand of the Lord came upon me and took me 2 in a vision of God into the land of Israel, and he placed me upon a very high mountain, and upon it was something like the construction of a city, opposite. 3 And he led me there, and look! A man! and his appearance was like the appearance of glistening bronze, and in his hand there was a builders’ cord and a measuring reed, and he stood by the gate. 4 And the man said to me, “Have you seen, son of man? Look with your eyes and listen with your ears, and set into your heart all the things I show you, since you have come here for me to show to you, and you shall show the house of Israel all the things you have seen.” 5 And look! There was an enclosing wall outside the house all around, and in the hand of the man was a reed, the measure of six cubits (each cubit being one cubit and a hand-breadtha), and he measured the outer wall; its thickness was equal to the reed, and its height equal to the reed. 6 And he entered into the gate facing toward the east in seven steps, and he measured the ailama of the gate, measuring one reed in depth,b 7 and the room was equal to the reed in length and equal to the reed in width, and the ailam between the thaielathac was six cubits, and the second theed equal to the reed in width, and equal to the reed in length, and the ailam was five cubits. 8 And the third thee was equal to the reed in width, and was equal to the reed in length. 9 And the ailam of the gate neighboring the ailam of the gate was eight cubits, and the aileue two cubits, and the ailam of the gate was inward. 10 And the thees of the gate were thees in front,f three on the one side and three on the other side and the same measure for the three, the same measure for the ailam on the one side and on the other side. 11 Also, he measured the breadth of the doors of the gate ten cubits, and the width of the gate thirteen cubits. 12 And the face before the theeimg narrowed to one cubit,h on the one side and on the other side, and the thee was six cubits on the one side and six cubits on the other side. 13 And he measured the gate from the wall of the thee to the wall of the thee, a breadth of twenty-five cubits, this gate against that gate. 14 And the open space of the ailam of the gate outside was twenty cubits, theeim around the gate. 15 And the open space of the gate outside into the open space of the ailam of the gate inside was fifty cubits. 16 And there were hidden niches toward the thees and toward the ailam of the inside gate surrounding the court, and in like manner the ailam had windows all around within, and toward the ailam palm trees were on the one side and on the other side. The North, East, and South Gates 17 And he led me into the interior court, and look, there were chambers and galleries all around the court; thirty chambers were in the galleries. 18 And the porticoes were behind the gates, in conformity to the length of the gates, that is, the lower gallery. 19 And he measured the breadth of the court from the open space of the outer gate inward to the open space of the gate facing out, a hundred cubits, facing toward the east. And he brought me to the north. 20 And look, there was a gate facing north, by the outer court, and he measured it, both its length and breadth, 21 and the three thees on the one side and three on the other side and the aileu and the ailamoni and its palms, and it was in conformity with the measure of the gate facing toward the east; fifty cubits was its length and twenty-five cubits its width. 22 And its windows and ailamon and its palm trees were just as the gate facing toward the east, and they would ascend it by seven steps, and the ailams were inward. 23 And the gate to the interior court was facing toward the northern gate, as was the gate facing toward the east, and he measured the court, from gate to gate, a hundred cubits. 24 And he led me toward the south, and look, there was a gate facing south, and he measured it and the thee and the aileu and the ailamon according to these measures. 25 And its windows and ailamon were all around, just as the windows of the ailams: fifty cubits was its length and twenty-five cubits its width. 26 And it had seven steps and inward ailamon, and it had palm trees, one on the one side and one on the other side upon the aileus. 27 And there was a gate opposite the gate of the interior court southward, and he measured the court from gate to gate, a hundred cubits in width, southward. 28 And he led me into the interior court of the southern gate, and he measured the gate according to these measures, 29 and the thee, the aileu, and the ailamon according to these measures. And it and the surrounding ailamon had windows all around; fifty cubits was its length, and the width twentyfive cubits, 31 from the ailams into the outer court, and palms and eight steps were on the aileus. 32 And he led me into the gate facing the east, and he measured it according to these measures, 33 and the thees, and the aileus, and the ailamon according to these measures. And it and the ailamon had windows; fifty cubits was its length, and the width twenty-five cubits. 34 And there were ailamon in the interior court, and palms were on the aileus on the one side and on the other side, and it had eight steps. 35 And he led me into the north-facing gate, and he measured according to these measures. 36 And the thees, and the aileus and the ailamon, and it and its ailamon had windows all around, fifty cubits was its length, and its width twenty-five cubits. 37 And the ailamon were in the outer court, and the aileus had palms on the one side and on the other side, and it had eight steps. 38 Its chambers and its doorways and its ailamon near the second gate were an outflow 39 in order that they could sacrifice the sacrifices for sins and ignorance in it; 40 and behind the drain of the burnt offerings facing north were two tables facing toward the east, behind the second gate, that is, the ailams of the gate, two tables toward the east, 41 four on the one side and four on the other side, behind the gate. Upon them they will sacrifice the offerings, opposite the eight tables of the offerings. 42 And there were four hewn stone tables for the burnt offerings, a cubit and a half in width, and two and a half cubits long, and a cubit in height. Upon them they will place the implements by which they slaughter the burnt offerings and the sacrifices there. 43 And they will have a border of a hand’s breadth hewn all around inside, and on the tables there were coverings above, to cover from the rain and from the heat. 44 And he led me into the interior court, and look, there were two rooms in the interior court, one behind the gate facing north extending southward, and one behind the gate southward but facing north. 45 And he said to me, “This room facing southward is for the priests who keep guard over the house, 46 and the room facing north is for the priests who keep guard over the altar; these are the sons of Zadok, those of the sons of Levi who approach the Lord to minister to him. 47 And he measured the court: its length a hundred cubits and its width a hundred cubits over its four sides, and the altar was opposite the house. 48 And he led me into the ailam of the house. And he measured the aila of the ailam: five cubits in width on the one side and five cubits on the other side, and the width of the doorway fourteen cubits, and the side walls of the door of the ailam three cubits on the one side and three cubits on the other side, 49 and the length of the ailam was twenty cubits, and the width twelve cubits, and they would ascend it on ten steps. And there were pillars upon the ailam, one on the one side and one on the other side.

41And he led me into the sanctuary whose ailam he measured; six cubits was the width on the one side, 2 and six cubits the width of the ailam on the other side, and the width of the gate ten cubits, and the side walls of the gate five cubits on the one side and five cubits on the other side, and he measured itsa length forty cubits, and the width twenty cubits. 3 And he entered into the interior court, and he measured the ail of the doorway two cubits, and the doorway six cubits, and the side walls of the doorway seven cubits on the one side and seven cubits on the other side. 4 And he measured the length of the doors forty cubits, and their width twenty cubits, at the face of the sanctuary. And he said, “This is the holy of holies.” 5 And he measured the wall of the house six cubits, and the width of the side chamber four cubits all around. 6 And the sides, side upon side were twice thirty-three, and a space was in the wall of the house, in the sides all around, for the supporters to see, in order that they should never touch the walls of the house. 7 And the width of the upper part of the sides was in conformity with the extension from the wall toward the upper part surrounding the house, so that it would be wider at the top,b and people would go up from the lower part to the upper part, and from the cornice to the third floor. 8 And the thrael of the house was, in height, all around the space of the sides equal to the reed, a space of six cubits. 9 And the width of the wall of the outer side chambers was five cubits, and the open space between the side chambers of the house 10 and between the rooms was twenty cubits wide, the periphery of the house all around. 11 And the doors of the rooms at the open space of the one door which was facing toward the north, and the one door facing toward the south, and the width of the light of the open space was five cubits in width all around. 12 And the court in front of the open space facing as to the sea was seventy cubits, the width of the boundary wall was five cubits wide all around, and its length was ninety cubits. 13 And he measured in front of the house a hundred cubits long, and the open spaces and the partitions and their walls a hundred cubits long, 14 and the width toward the face of the house and the open spaces in front, a hundred cubits. 15 And he measured the length of the boundary at the face of the open space of the back of that house and the open space on the one side and on the other side, a hundred cubits long. And the sanctuary and the corners and the outer ailam were roofed, 16 and the windows were latticed, lights all around for the three stories, for looking down, and the house and the neighboring parts were paneled all around, and the ground even from the ground as far as the windows, and the windows would fold back threefold for looking out. 17 And close to the interior and as far as the exterior and upon the whole wall all around, on the inside and outside, 18 were carved cherubim and palms between cherub and cherub; there were two faces for each cherub; 19 a face of a human facing toward the one palm and a lion’s face facing toward the other palm.a The house was carved all around. 20 From the ground as far as the coffered work, the cherubim and palms were carved. 21 And the holy place and the sanctuary opened on four sides. 22 a wooden altar. Its height was three cubits, and the length two cubits, and the width two cubits, and it had horns, and its pedestal and its sides were of wood. And he said to me, “This is the table which is before the face.” And there were two doorways to the temple; 23 and two doorways to the holy place. 24 Of the two pivoting doorways, one had two doorways, and the second door had two doorways. 25 And there was carving on them, and at the doors of the sanctuary there were cherubim and palms in conformity with the carving of the holy places, and good wood in conformity according to the face of the outer ailam, 26 and hidden windows. And he measured on the one side and on the other side to the roof of the ailam and to the joined sides of the house.

42And he led me into the inner court, toward the east, opposite the gate toward the north, and he led me, and look! There were five rooms next to the open space and next to the boundary toward the north, 2 a hundred cubits in length toward the north, and in width, fifty. 3 The gates were marked the way of the interior court, and the galleries the way of the outer court, arranged in rows facing three porticoes. 4 And in front of the rooms was a walkway, ten cubits wide, a hundred cubits long, and their doors were toward the north. 5 And the upper walkways were likewise, because the gallery projected from it, from the gallery below, and the space. So was gallery and space; so also were the two porticoes. 6 Wherefore, they were triple, and they had no pillars like the outer pillars. On account of this they projected from the lower and the middle from the land. 7 And there was an outer light the way the rooms of the outer court opposite the rooms of those toward the north, fifty cubits long. 8 Because the length of those rooms facing into the outer court was fifty cubits, these also were facing those. The whole was a hundred cubits. 9 And there were doors of these rooms of the entrance toward the east, for entering through them from the outer court 10 in conformity with the light in the beginning of the walkway. And the parts toward the south were toward the face of the south, facing the open space and toward the face of the partition, and so were the rooms. 11 And the walkway according to the face of them was according to the measures of the rooms toward the north, according to their length and according to their width and according to all their exits and according to all their twisting and according to their lights and according to their doorways, 12 of the rooms toward the south, and according to the doorways from the beginning of the walkway, about an interval of a reed for light, and toward the east, to enter through them. 13 And he said to me, “The rooms toward the north, and the rooms toward the south, facing the spaces, these are the rooms of the sanctuary, in which the priests, the sons of Zadok who approach the Lord, will eat the holies of holies and there set the holies of holies, and the sacrifice and sin offeringsa and offerings for mistakes,b since the place is holy. 14 Besides the priests no one will enter there; they will not go out from the sanctuary into the outer court, so that those who approach should be continually holy, and they should not touch their clothing in which they minister, since they are holy, and they will put on other garments when they touch the people.” 15 And the interior measuring of the house was completed. And he led me along the way of the gate facing toward the east, and he measured the plan of the house round about. 16 And he stood behind the gate facing the east, and he measured five hundred by lengths of the measuring reed, 17 and he turned toward the north, and he measured along the face of the north five hundred cubits by lengths of the measuring reed, 18 and he turned toward the sea, and he measured along the face of the sea five hundred by lengths of the measuring reed, 19 and he turned toward the south, and he measured in front of the south, five hundred by lengths of the measuring reed; 20 he measured the four parts with his reed.f And he set it and their surrounding enclosure in order, five hundred cubits toward the east, and separated by a width of five hundred cubits between the sanctuary and between the outer wall of the design of the house.

43And he led me to the gate that looks east, and he led me out, 2 and look, the glory of the God of Israel was coming along the road toward the east! And there was a sound of the encampment like a sound of many redoubling sounds, and the land shone like a light from the glory all around.[12] 3 And the vision I saw was similar to the vision I saw when I entered to anoint the city, and the vision of the chariot I saw was similar to the vision I saw near the River Chebar, and I fell upon my face. 4 And the glory of the Lord entered into the house along the road of the gate facing toward the east. 5 And a spirit lifted me and led me into the interior court, and look, the house was full of the glory of the Lord! 6 And I stood and look, there was a voice of someone speaking to me from the house, and the man stood close to me. 7 And he said to me, “You have seen, O son of man, the place of my throne and the place of the soles of my feet, among which my name dwells in the middle of the house of Israel for eternity; and the house of Israel, they and their princes, will no longer profane my holy name by their fornication and by the murders of the princes in the midst of them,[13] 8 when they set my porch by their porches and my doorposts close to their doorposts, and they set my wall as if it enclosed me and them, and they profaned my holy name by their lawless acts that they were committing, and I destroyed them by my anger and by slaughter. 9 And now, let them thrust aside their immorality and the murders of their princes from me, and I will dwell in the middle of them for eternity. 10 And you, O son of man, show the house of Israel the house, and they will grow weary of their sins—and its appearance and its disposition, 11 and they will receive their punishment for all that they did. And mark out the house and its exits and its plan, and you shall make known to them all its ordinances and all its statutes, and you shall delineate them before them, and they shall keep all my duties and all my ordinances, and they shall do them. 12 And show them the plan of the house; on the top of the mountain, all its boundaries all around are the holies of holies. 13 And these are the dimensions of the altar (by the cubit of the cubit and hand-breadth): a hole of a depth about a cubit and the width a cubit, and a projection upon its border all around it was a span. And this was the height of the altar, 14 from the bottoma of the beginning of its hole to this great lower ledge two cubits, and the width a cubit, and from the small ledge to the great ledge four cubits, and width a cubit, 15 but the arielb was four cubits, and from the ariel and above the horns a cubit. 16 And the ariel was twelve cubits long by twelve cubits, upon its four sides, 17 and the ledge was fourteen cubits long by fourteen cubits wide upon its four parts. And its border encircling all around it half a cubit, and its rim a cubit all around, and its steps were facing toward the east. 18 And he said to me, “Son of man, this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘These are the ordinances of the altar, in the day of its creation, to bring burnt offerings upon it and to pour blood against it. 19 And you shall give to the Levite priests, those from the seed of Zadok, those who approach me,’ says the Lord God, ‘to minister for me, a bull-calf for sin, 20 and they shall take some of its blood and place it on the four horns of the altar and on the four corners of the ledge and on the step all around, and they shall make atonement for it, 21 and they shall take the calf that is for sin, and it will be burned up in the separate part of the house, outside the sanctuary. 22 And on the second day they will take two unblemished goat kids for sin, and make atonement on the altar just as they made atonement by the calf. 23 And after you complete the atonement, they shall offer an unblemished bullcalf and an unblemished ram-sheep, 24 and you shall offer them before the Lord. And the priests shall sprinkle salt upon them, and offer them as burnt offerings to the Lord. 25 For seven days you will daily do a kid for sins, and bull-calf and ram-sheep; they shall do them unblemished 26 for seven days. And they shall make atonement for the altar, and they will purify it and fill their hands. 27 And it shall be from the eighth day and henceforth, the priests shall do your burnt offerings and the sacrifices of your salvation on the altar. And I will accept you,’ says the Lord.”

44And he returned me along the road of the gate of the outer sanctuary facing the east, and this was shut. 2 And the Lord said to me, “This gate shall be shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall ever pass through it, because the Lord, the God of Israel, will enter through it, and it will be shut. 3 Therefore the prince, he shall sit in it to eat bread before the Lord; he shall enter along the way of ailam of the gate, and he will exit along its way.” 4 And he led me along the road of the gate which was facing north opposite the house, and I looked, and look! the house of the Lord was full of glory, and I fell upon my face. 5 And the Lord said to me, “Son of man, set into your heart and look with your eyes and hear with your ears everything that I am speaking with you according to all the ordinances of the house of the Lord, and according to all its statutes, and you shall set your heart to the entrance of the house, according to all its exits in all the sanctuary. 6 And you shall say to the rebelling house, to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Let there be enough for you of all your transgressions, O house of Israel, 7 for you to bring alien sons, uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, to be in my sanctuary, and they would profane it when you offered bread, flesh and blood, and you transgressed my covenant by all your lawless acts; 8 but you set to keep a watch in my sanctuary.” 9 “‘On account of this, this is what the Lord God says: “No alien son, uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, shall enter into my sanctuary among all the aliens’ sons who are in the middle of the house of Israel, 10 except for the Levites who abandoned me when Israel wandered astray from me after their thoughts (they also will receive their injusticea) 11 and they will be ministering in my sanctuary as doorkeepers by the gates of the house, and ministering for the house. They shall sacrifice the burnt offerings and the sacrifices for the people, and they shall stand before the people to minister to them. 12 Because they were ministering for them before the face of their idols, and it became a punishment of injustice to the house of Israel; on account of this I lifted my hand against them,” says the Lord God, 13 “and they shall not approach me to serve me as priest, or to approach the sanctuary of the sons of Israel, or to my holy of holies, and they will receive their dishonor in the error by which they erred. 14 But they shall bring them to keep watch as guards of the house in all its works and in everything that they do. 15 The Levite priests, the sons of Zadok who kept guard over my sanctuary when the house of Israel wandered astray from me, they will approach me, to minister to me as priests, and they shall stand before my face to offer me sacrifice, fat and blood,” says the Lord God. 16 ‘“They shall enter into my sanctuary and come to my table to minister to me as priests, and they shall keep my watches. 17 But this shall happen when they enter the gates of the interior court: they shall put on linen garments, and not put on wool when they minister as priests from the gate of the interior court. 18 And they shall have linen turbans upon their heads, and have linen underclothes upon their waists, and they shall not gird themselves forcefully. 19 But when they go out into the outer court to the people, they shall take off their garments in which they ministered, and they shall place them in the rooms of the sanctuary and put on other garments, but they shall never sanctify the people by their garments. 20 And they shall not shave their heads or pluck off their hair; in covering, they will cover their heads. 21 And no priest shall ever drink wine when they enter into the interior court. 22 And they shall not take a widow or a divorced woman as a wife for themselves, but rather a virgin from the seed of Israel, but they shall take a widow if she be from a priest. 23 And they shall teach my people between holy and impure and explain to them between unclean and clean. 24 And they shall stand to give judgment upon a judgment of blood. They shall vindicate my duties, and judge my judgments, and keep my statutes and my ordinances at all my festivals, and sanctify my sabbaths. 25 But they will not come near to defile themselves, for the soul of a person except for a father and a mother and for a son and for a daughter and for a brother and for a sister of his who had no husband, he may be defiled. 26 And after he is purified he shall count seven days for himself. 27 And on whatever day they enter into the interior court to minister in the holy place, they shall bring a sin offering,” says the Lord God. 28 “And it will be their inheritance. I am their inheritance, and no possession will be given among the sons of Israel, because I am their possession. 29 But they shall eat the sacrifices and the offerings for sins, and the offerings for ignorance, and everything that is set apart in Israel shall be theirs. 30 The firstfruits of everything and the first-born of everything and all the choice parts from all of your firstfruits shall be for the priests; and you shall give your firstfruits to the priest to put your blessings upon your houses.[14] 31 And the priests shall not eat any carcass or creature caught by wild beasts from birds and from livestock.”’”

45“‘“And when you measure the land for inheritance, you shall separate firstfruits for the Lord, a holy part of the land, twenty-five thousand cubits long and its width twenty thousand cubits. It shall be holy in all its borders all around. 2 And from this there shall be a sanctuary, five hundred cubits by five hundred cubits square all around, and an interval of fifty cubits all around it. 3 Also from this distribution you shall measure twenty-five thousand long and twenty thousand wide, and in it shall be the holy of holies. 4 Some of the land shall be for the priests ministering in the holy place, and it shall be for those who approach to minister to the Lord, and it shall be a place for them for their houses, separate for consecration, 5 twenty-five thousand long and twenty thousand wide. And for the Levites who minister to the house, there shall be cities as a possession for them to dwell in. 6 And you shall establish the possession of the city five thousand wide and twenty fivethousand long; just like the firstfruits of the holy places, they shall be for all the house of Israel. 7 And some of this and that shall be for the prince, for the firstfruits of the sanctuary, for the possession of the city before the firstfruits of the sanctuary, and before the possession of the city, facing the sea, and from the sea, toward the east; and the length equal to one of the portions from the seaward borders, and the length to the eastward boundaries of the land, 8 and it shall be his for a possession in Israel, and the princes of Israel shall not oppress my people any more, and the house of Israel shall inherit the land according to their tribes.”’” 9 “‘This is what the Lord God says: “Let it be enough for you, princes of Israel! Remove injustice and distress; do justice and righteousness; remove oppression from my people!” says the Lord God. 10 “You should have a just scale and a just measure and a just choinix for the measure; 11 and the choinix likewise will be one to receive. The choinix shall be a tenth of the gomor and a tenth of the gomor will be equal with reference to the gomor. 12 And the stathmion shall be twenty obols; five shekels will be five, and shekels, ten and fifty shekels will be a mina for you. 13 And this is the firstfruits which you will separate: a sixth measure from the gomor of the wheat, and a sixth of it will be the oiphi from the kor of barley. 14 And the ordinance of the oil: a kotyle of oil from ten kotyles, because ten kotoyles are a gomor. 15 And a sheep from ten sheep, a portion from all the families of Israel, for sacrifices and for burnt offerings and for a peace offering to make atonement for you,” says the Lord God. 16 “And all the people shall give this firstfruit to the prince of Israel. 17 But the burnt offerings and the sacrifices and the drink offerings for the festivals, and for the new moons and for the sabbaths and for all the festivals of the house of Israel, will be through the prince. He will make these offerings for sins and the sacrifice and these burnt offerings and the offerings of peace to make atonement for the house of Israel.”’” 18 “‘This is what the Lord God says: “In the first month, on the first day of the month, you shall take an unblemished calf from the cattle to make atonement for the sanctuary. 19 And the priest shall take some of the blood of the propitiatory offering and put it on the doorposts of the house and on the four corners of the temple and on the altar and on the doorposts of the gate of the interior court. 20 And thus you shall do in the seventh month, on the first day of the month: there shall be a portion from each person, and you shall make a propitiation for the house. 21 And on the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, the Pascha shall be a feast for you. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. 22 And on that day the prince will prepare a calf for sins for himself and the house and all the people of the land. 23 And he will make burnt offerings for the seven days of the feast to the Lord, seven unblemished calves and seven rams every day for the seven days, and a goat-kid for sins every day, and a sacrifice. 24 And you shall make a cake for the calf and a cake for the ram and the hin of oil for the cake. 25 And in the seventh month on the fifteenth of the month, at the feast, you shall make the offerings throughout the seven days, just like the offerings for the sins and just like the burnt offerings and just like the gift and just like the oil.”

46“‘This is what the Lord God says: “The gate in the interior court facing the east shall be shut for the six working days. On the day of the sabbaths it should be opened, and on the day of the new moon it shall be opened. 2 And the prince shall enter along the way of the ailam of the inner gate, and he shall stand at the doorway of the gate, and the priests will perform his burnt offerings and his offerings of peace. 3 And they shall worship at the doorway of the gate and go out, and the gate shall not be shut until the evening, and the people of the land shall worship at the doorway of that gate both on the Sabbaths and on the new moons before the Lord. 4 And the prince shall offer the burnt offerings to the Lord on the day of the Sabbaths: six unblemished lambs and an unblemished ram, 5 and a manna cake for the ram, and for the lambs for the sacrifice, a gift of his hand and the hin of oil for the cake. 6 And on the day of the new moon it will be an unblemished calf and six unblemished lambs and a ram, 7 and there the cake for the ram and the cake for the calf will be manna, but for the lambs whatever his hand should procure, and the hin of oil for the cake. 8 And when the prince enters, he shall enter along the way of the ailam of the gate, and he will exit along the way of the gate. 9 But when the people of the land enter before the Lord on the festivals, the one who enters along the way of the gate looking to the north to worship shall go out along the way of the southern gate, and the one who enters along the way of the southern gate shall go out along the way of the northern gate. One shall not turn around toward the gate by which one had entered, but rather he shall exit straight across from it. 10 And the prince shall enter with them in the middle of them when they enter, and when they go out he shall go out. 11 And on the festivals and on the assemblies there will be manna as cake for the calf and a cake for the ram and for the lambs whatever his hand should procure, and the hin of oil for the cake. 12 And if the prince should make a burnt offering of peace to the Lord as an acknowledgement, he shall also open for himself the gate facing the east, and he shall make his burnt offering and his peace offerings,a the way he does on the day of the sabbaths, and he shall exit and shut the door after he departs. 13 And he shall prepare an unblemished year-old lamb for a burnt offering every day for the Lord; he will prepare it early in the day. 14 And he will prepare manna in addition to it early in the day, a sixth of the measure and third of the hin of oil, to mix the fine flour, manna for the Lord, an ordinance continually. 15 You shall prepare the lamb, and you shall prepare the manna and the oil early in the day, a burnt offering continually.” 16 “‘This is what the Lord God says: “If the prince gives a present to one of his sons from his inheritance, this will be a possession for his sons by inheritance. 17 But if he gives a present to one of his subjects it will be hisb until the year of release, and he will return it to the prince, except for the inheritance of his sons—it will be theirs. 18 But the prince shall certainly not take any of the people’s inheritance to oppress them; he will assign an inheritance to his sons from his property so that my people should not be scattered, every one from his property.”’” 19 And he led me into the entrance behind the gate, into the rooms of the holy priests facing north. And look, there was a separated place there. 20 And he said to me, “This is the place where the priests shall boil the offerings for ignorance and the offerings for sins, and there they shall bake the entire manna so as not to carry it into the outer court and sanctify the people.” 21 And he led me out into the outer court, and he led me to the four sides of the court, and look, there was a court along the side of the court. 22 Along the side was a court,c a court on the four sides, and of the court there was a small court forty cubits long, and thirty cubits wide, the one measure the same for the four. 23 And there were rooms surrounding them all around the four, and kitchens had been made under the rooms all around. 24 And he said to me, “These are the cookhouses where those who minister to the house boil the sacrifices of the people.”

47And he brought me to the doorway of the house, and look, water was going out underneath the open space toward the east, because the face of the house faced toward the east, and the water was descending from the right side south of the altar. 2 And he led me out along the way of the gate toward the north, and he led me around the outside way to the gate of the court facing east, and look, water was descending from the right side. 3 Just as a man was exiting opposite, and a measure was in his hand, and he measured a thousand cubits with the measure, and he passed through in the water, water of a discharge. 4 And he measured a thousand cubits, and he passed through in the water, water up to his thighs, and he measured a thousand cubits, and he passed through the water up to his waist. 5 And he measured a thousand cubits, and he was not able to pass through, because it was overflowing with a torrent which they will not cross. 6 And he said to me, “Have you seen, son of man?” And he led me to the bank of the river. 7 When I returned,a and look, on the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other side. 8 And he said to me, “This water proceeding into the Galilee which is toward the east would also descend to Arabia and would come as far as to sea to the water of the estuary, and it will make the waters healthy. 9 And this will happen: every creature of the living beings that teem upon everywhere the river comes will live. And there will be very many fish because this water has come there, and it will make healthy and will live. Everything upon which the river comes will live. 10 And fishermen from En-gedi as far as En-eglaim will stand there; it will be a drying-place of large drag nets, it will be by itself, and its fish will be equal to the fish of the Great Sea, a very great multitude. 11 And in its estuary and at its turning and at its high water mark they will certainly not become healthy; they have been given over for salt. 12 And every fruit tree will arise at the river, on its bank on the one side and on the other side. It will certainly not decay upon it; neither should its fruit come to an end; it will bring forth its new produce, because these waters of theirs proceed from the sanctuary, and their fruit will be for food, and their ascent for health.” 13 “This is what the Lord God says: ‘You will inherit these boundaries of the land. There will be an addition of a portion for the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. 14 And you will inherit it, each one like his brother, for which I lifted my hand to give their fathers, and this land will fall to you by inheritance. 15 And these are the boundaries of the land toward the north, from the Great Sea that descends and divides the entrance of Hamath Zedad, 16 Abthera Sibraim, Eliam, between the borders of Damascus and between the borders of Hamath, a court of Saunon, which are above the borders of Hauran. 17 These are the boundaries from the sea from the court of Enan, the boundaries of Damascus and the regions to the north. 18 And the regions to the east: between Hauran and between Damascus and between Gilead and between the land of Israel, the Jordan separates to the sea east of Palms; these are the regions to the east. 19 And the regions to the south and southwest from Teman and Palms as far as the water of Meribath-kadesh extending to the Great Sea. 20 This is the south and southwest part. This is the part of the Great Sea; it acts as a boundary as far as opposite the entrance of Hamath up to its entrance. These are the regions to the west of Hamath. 21 And you shall divide this land for yourselves, for the tribes of Israel. 22 You shall cast it by lot for you and for the aliens who dwell in the middle of you, whoever fathered sons in the middle of you, and they will be like natives to you among the sons of Israel. They will eat with you by inheritance in the middle of the tribes of Israel. 23 And they will be in a tribe of sojourners among the sojourners with them. There you will give an inheritance to them,’ says the Lord God.

48“‘And these are the names of the tribes from the beginning toward the north along the part of the descent that divides to the entrance of the court of Hamath, court of Elam, the border of Damascus toward the north, along the side of Hamath’s court. And the regions to the east as far as to the west will be for them: of Dan, one portion. 2 And from the borders of Dan, the regions to the east as far as the regions to the west: of Asher, one portion. 3 And from the borders of Asher from the regions to the east as far as the regions to the west: of Naphtali, one portion. 4 And from the borders of Naphtali from east as far as the regions to the west: of Manasseh, one portion. 5 And from the borders of Manasseh from the regions to the east as far as the regions to the west: of Ephraim, one portion. 6 And from the borders of Ephraim from the regions to the east as far as the regions to the west: of Reuben, one portion. 7 And from the borders of Reuben from the regions to the east as far as the regions to the west: of Judah, one portion. 8 “‘And from the borders of Judah from the regions to the east he will remain. There will be a firstfruit of what is set apart, twenty-five thousand wide and its length like one of the portions of those to the east and as far as the west, and that which is holy will be in the middle of them, 9 the firstfruit which they will separate for the Lord, twenty-five thousand long and twenty-five thousand wide. 10 The firstfruit of the sanctuary will belong to these people: for the priests, to the north twenty-five thousand and to the west ten thousand and to the south twenty-five thousand, and the mountain of the sanctuary will be in the middle of it. 11 To the sanctified priests, the sons of Zadok who kept the watches over the house, who were not led astray when the sons of Israel erred, the way the Levites were led astray, 12 also to them will the firstfruit be given from the regions of the land, a holy of holies from the borders of the Levites. 13 And for the Levites will be the parts next to the borders of the priests, twenty-five thousand long, and ten thousand wide—all twenty-five thousand long, and twenty thousand wide. 14 Nothing from it will be sold, and it will not be measured, and the firstfruits of the land not be removed, because it is holy to the Lord. 15 And the remaining five thousand wide by twenty-five thousand long will be an outer wall for the city, for dwelling and for an interval for it, and the city will be in the middle of it. 16 And these are its dimensions, from the sides to the north four thousand five hundred, and from the sides to the south four thousand five hundred; from the sides to the east four thousand five hundred, and from the sides to the west four thousand five hundred. 17 And there will be a space for the city to the north two hundred and fifty, and to the south two hundred and fifty, and to the east two hundred and fifty, and to the west two hundred and fifty. 18 And the remainder of the length that is next to the firstfruits of the sanctuary, ten thousand to the east and ten thousand to the west. And they will be the firstfruit of what is holy, and its produce will be for bread for those who work in the city. 19 And those who work in the city will work in it from all the tribes of Israel. 20 All the firstfruit will be twenty-five thousand by twenty-five thousand; you shall separate a square of it, the beginning of what is holy, from the property of the city. 21 And the remainder is for the prince from this and that from the firstfruits of what is holy, and for the possession of the city about twenty-five thousand long, as far as the borders of those to the east to the west about twenty five thousand as far as the borders of those to the west, next to the portions of the prince; and the firstfruits of the holy places and the sanctuary of the house will be in the middle of it. 22 And from the Levites some of the property of the city will be in the middle of the princes’ properties between the borders of Judah and between the borders of Benjamin; it will be the princes. 23 “‘And the remainder of the tribes, from the regions to the east as far as the regions to the west: of Benjamin, one portion. 24 And from the borders of Benjamin from the regions to the east as far as the regions to the west: of Simeon, one portion. 25 And from the borders of Simeon from the regions to the east as far as the regions to the west: of Issachar, one portion. 26 And from the borders of Issachar from the regions to the east as far as the regions to the west: of Zebulun, one portion. 27 And from the borders of Zebulun from the regions to the east as far as the regions to the west: of Gad, one portion. 28 And from the borders of Gad as far as the regions toward the southwest and its borders will be from Teman and the water of Meribath-kadesh, an inheritance as far as the Great Sea. 29 This is the land that you shall cast by lot for the tribes of Israel, and these are their divisions,’ says the Lord God. 30 ‘And these are the exits of the city, which are to the north, four thousand five hundred cubits by measure. 31 And the gates of the city shall be called by the names of the tribes of Israel, three gates to the north: Reuben’s gate one and Judah’s gate one and Levi’s gate one. 32 And the regions to the east four thousand five hundred cubits, and three gates: Joseph’s gate one and Benjamin’s gate one and Dan’s gate one. 33 And the regions to the south four thousand five hundred cubits by measure, and three gates: Simeon’s gate one and Issachar’s gate one and Zebulun’s gate one. 34 And the regions to the west four thousand five hundred cubits by measure, and three gates: Gad’s gate one and Asher’s gate one and Naphtali’s gate one. 35 Its circumference is eighteen thousand. And the name of the city: its name will be from the day it was created.”’”
