The Chapter of Taking the Censer in the Hand. The following shall be said: “Homage to you, [O censer] of the gods who are in the following of Thoth. I am Horus of the height of heaven, the beautiful one of terror, the Lord of victory, the mighty one of terror, the exalted one of the two plumes, the great one in Abydos! Suten ta hetepu. I am pure.” Another Chapter. “Awake happily in peace, O Apt, ruler of the temples of the gods and goddesses who dwell in you! Your fear is in my belly, and your terrors follow after my limbs. Adoration to your limbs, adoration to the Great Company of the Gods who are in your following. I smell the earth to you as to Neb-er-tcher. “I am the beneficent Ram (or, Soul) that dwells in Suten-henen (Herakleopolis), who gives doubles, and who destroys sins. Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, is flooded with it, for it is sweet to your heart, and it shall never depart from you. “Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, is filled with the sweet Eye[s] of Horus, the Black and the White, which rest on the river-flood, the mud of Amen, concerning which Amen said, ‘Behold it ...’ That which is its abomination (but) is lying in its name of ‘Bat.’ “It is sweet to the heart of Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, and beautiful on the day in which he rests his heart upon it. It opens his flesh, it knits together his bones, it gathers together his members, and he absorbs the smell of it as Ra joins himself to his horizon. “O Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, I give to you the Eye of Horus, it is sweet to your heart; let your face be gracious (or, appeased) and good for Pharaoh.” The Sixteenth Ceremony. It washes you, it ornaments you, it makes its place on your two hands.[2] “Homage to you, O incense. Homage to you, O Ment-uru (bitumen), which dwells in the member of the Eye of Horus the Great. Pharaoh has made you spread abroad (pet) in your name of ‘Pet,’ Pharaoh has censed (senter) you in your name of ‘Senter.’ “O Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, I have presented to you the Eye of Horus, the odour comes to you, the odour of the Eye of Horus is to you.” The Seventeenth Ceremony. Run to me yourself as you ran to your holy uraeus to deliver yourself from Apep. “I have come to you, O Amen-Ra. I am Thoth, who journeys at the two seasons to seek for the Eye of its Lord. I have come, I have found the Eye, I have reckoned it up for its Lord. “Come to me, O Amen-Ra, guide me in the path on which you travel; make me to enter in in the form of a Ba bird, make me to come forth in the form of a Lion, make me to travel in the form of Ap-uat, and let me not be repulsed or turned back on the roads, on this day, on this night, in this month, in this year. “Behold, come to me, O Amen-Ra, and open for me the two doors of the sky, and unclose for me the two doors of the earth, and throw open before me the area of the divine house. “I have looked upon the god, I have come to him, and his two uraei have enclosed me. There are oblations in my hands, let there not be said to me, ‘Get back.’ I have made the God to rest [upon] his seat, I have not defiled my magical power, and no evil belonged to me. I come forth in the form of Sekhet. Suten ta hetepu. I am pure.” The Nineteenth Ceremony. The Chapter of Withdrawing the Foot, with the Papyrus Cord, from the Great Sanctuary. The following shall be said four times: “Thoth has come. He has delivered the Eye of Horus from the hands of his enemies. No male devil and no female devil shall enter into this temple. I have come to perform the rites; behold, I have not come to perform that which should not be performed. Exalted is Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, upon his great seat; the Great Company of the Gods are exalted upon their seats. “Your beauties are to you, O Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands. They give oil to your divine double front, and the Menkhet bandlet for your members. They present to you the eye-paints Uatch and Mestemet, and [the odours of] myrrh and natron go round about your shrine. “Your Soul has gained the mastery in Annu of the South (Hermonthis), your terror has conquered those in the South; your name is holy in Annu (Heliopolis), and those of the North have fear of you. Offerings of things of every kind are made to you by the thousand on your altars of silver-gold. “The hands of the beneficent god are pure, your son Pharaoh whom you love. Your souls have tied together the Two Lands, and your bellowing (or, roaring) goes through every foreign land.”
The Censing and the Morning Hymns to Amen
5The Thirtieth Ceremony. The Chapter of Incense. The following shall be said: “The god comes provided with his members which he had hidden in the Eye of his body. The incense of the god comes forth in him to give an odour to the effluxes which have come forth from his divine flesh, the droppings which have fallen to the earth. All the gods have given it to him, and you have risen among them as a lord of fear, and your terror has come into being in those who are among them. “O Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, I have presented them to you, I have given them to you, that is, the Eye of Horus. If it lives, the Rekhit live, your flesh lives, and your sinews grow (or, flourish). The hearts of the gods of the horizon are gracious to you. When they see you they breathe the odour of you, and you rise upon your earth. Truly he flourishes.” Another Chapter. “The incense comes. The incense comes. The odour of the God comes. The breath of the God comes. The grains of incense come. The moisture which drops from the God comes, and the smell of it is upon you, O Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands. The Eye of Horus hides you in its tears, and the odour of it comes to you, O Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, and it exalts itself for you among the gods. “O divine odour, which are doubly good, exalt yourself as a god; Ra-Heru-khuti loves you, and his nostrils have seized you. Purity is to you, O incense of Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, exaltation be to you, O incense of Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands. The Eye of Horus has exalted you to the sky, the gods have seized you, for their hearts love you. “Peace be to you, O Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands. Let your heart expand, for I have brought to you the Eye of Horus, so that you may be great through that which your heart has received, and through that which your nostrils inhale at this censing. “The odour of the God is made the odour of the festival through the burning of it, and it rises up into the sky before Ra; the odour of the festival is made for all the gods from it, from the odour which comes forth from you, O Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands. “The great crown is exalted to your head, O image of Amen, who are established as the lord of the rising, and it forms an ornament before you, O Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands. I have bound up for you the Eye of Horus, the smell of it comes to you; the smell of the Eye of Horus is to you, O Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, the lover of incense.” Hymns to Amen. The following shall be said: “Pharaoh has come to you, Amen, Image of Amen, who are established with all things in your name of ‘Amen,’ Image of the eldest son of the Earth before your Father the Earth, and your Mother Nut, begetter of his organ of generation, who rise as the King of the South and North, most powerful of the gods. “Watch, and be in peace, you watch in peace; watch, Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, in peace. Watch, and be in peace, you watch in peace; watch, Prince in Annu, great one in Thebes, in peace. Watch, and be in peace, you watch in peace; watch, Prince of the Two Lands, in peace. “Watch, and be in peace, you watch in peace; watch, O you who built yourself, in peace. Watch, and be in peace, you watch in peace; watch, Creator of the sky and of the hidden things of the two horizons, in peace. “Watch, and be in peace, you watch in peace; watch, You before whom the gods come with bowed backs, lord of fear, mighty one of terror, in the hearts of all the Rekhit beings, in peace. Watch, and be in peace, you watch in peace; watch, Lord of offerings and of that beautiful offering, and rest in peace. “O Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, Lord of the month, for whom rites are performed every tenth day, Amsi-Amen (or, Menu-Amen), Bull of his mother, homage to you. Behold, Ra has offered to you that which you love; twice beautiful is he who has made an offering to Amen, his mother Nut is content at it. Exalted, exalted, you are exalted in the double horizon. “Ra has given you Hu and Sa, happiness and love. You have received offerings, and tchefau food of all kinds you have tasted in the Sekhet-hetep. Those who are in the heavens come to you rejoicing when they see you as their father; they recognize their Lord in you. Make yourself their chief in your name of Khepera. They approach you in your name of Ra-Tem, their faces are to you in your name of ‘Tem.’ “The goddess Maat has raised you up in your Khu, she has placed her arms around you, your Ka is in her. She has built you, your daughter whom you have built, and she has made you to come into being with the Ka of all the gods. You have pronounced the formulae, you have made them live, O Image, maker of the Kau. “You have made offerings to the Company of the Gods with your two hands, as the God who makes [beings] of different kinds with your fingers and with your toes, [when] you have embraced all the gods. You have risen as the lord of the Urertu Crown, you have led captive all the Lands, you have the mastery in the South, you have the mastery in the North, and you have united the Meh Crown to the Afi Crown, O Image who have fashioned all the gods, Image of the Father in all things. “Your two Eyes have come forth on your head with the goddess Ur-hekau of the South and with the goddess Ur-hekau of the North; behold, they flourish on your head in the train of them all, and in all their .... “O Image of Amen, O Image of Atem, O Image of Khepera, behold, you have presented to all the gods their doubles, their protections (?), their tchefau food, and everything which they have. Behold, Pharaoh has come to you, O Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, grant that he may be at the head of the living, be at peace with him, Amen-Ra, Bull of his Mother, president of his great seat, at the head of the Apts. “He declares before you that you have created for him good things of every kind, that you have delivered him from evil and baleful things of every kind; let them never have being before him.” Another Chapter. “Watch, and be in peace, you watch in peace; watch, Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, in peace. O Image of the firstborn son, heir of the Earth before your Father the Earth, and your Mother Nut. “Image of the god who came into being in primeval time, when no god existed, and when the name of nothing had been recorded, when you opened your two eyes and saw with them light appeared for all people; when shadow was pleasing to your two eyes the day [light] ceased to be. “You opened your mouth, you spoke with it, you established the sky with your two arms on the right in your name of ‘Amen,’ O Image of the Ka of all the gods, Image of Amen, Image of Atem, Image of Khepera, Image of the Lord of the whole earth, Image of the Lord who rises as King of the South and North, Image, fashioner of gods, fashioner of men, fashioner of all things, Lord of life, you live, most powerful of all the gods. “You have led captive the Company of the Gods and given [them their] offerings, you have pronounced the formulae for them, you have made them live, O Image, creator of their Kau. That which fills Horus you have given among the Company of the Gods. “You are the God who creates beings of different kinds with your fingers and with your toes; you exist, Lord of all things, Atem who came into being in primeval time, the god with your high plumes, the begetter who has created more creations than all the gods.” Another Chapter. “Watch, and be in peace, you watch in peace; watch, Amen-Ra, Lord of the Throne of the Two Lands, in peace. You renew the sht bandlet, King of the gods, you lift high the arm, Lord of the Urertu Crown, Bull of your mother, at the head of your fields, with extended stride, at the head of the Land of the South. “The gods of the West make offerings to you, the gods of the East make entreaty to you, and the gods of the two horizons praise you, when you cause annihilation, annihilation. Mighty one of slaughter, great of valour, who have dominion among the gods, god of the exalted arm, on whom the two plumes glitter like stars, you have united the Meteh Crown to the Afnet Crown, you place your arms and the gods rest [upon them]. “Tem, powerful one at each of the two seasons, whose name is more hidden than his births, the chief who sends forth light from his two eyes, the Great Power who is exalted upon his throne, the life of the gods of the two horizons, through whom the water comes into being, who appears issuing from within his egg; “He is the eldest son for those who dwell in the Tuat, and Ra the Chief is for living beings, he opens the mouth beneficently for those who dwell in the sky, he is the beneficent guide of the divine beings of the Tuat, and the Company of the Gods live when they see you. Pharaoh has come to you, his Lord, he propitiates you, he speaks what you wish, so that you may be wholly at peace with him on this day.” Another Hymn to Amen. The following shall be said: “Homage to you, Amen-Ra, Divine Power who came into being in primeval time, lord of Eternity, One, fashioner of the gods, fashioner of men, fashioner of all things, you appear the Only One, Only One in Nu, before your Father the Earth, and your Mother Nut (the Sky). “You are in the form of Horus who illumines the Two Lands with his two Eyes. It is not Aten [of] the dwellers in the sky, but it is your head which reaches into the upper sky in your divine form, the god of the two lofty plumes, which appears from out of the water of his lapis-lazuli. “Revolve in your name of ‘Destroyer of the evil ones,’ and hack in pieces all those who devise evil against Pharaoh; as you have sent them forth to do what they had to do, deliver him (i.e., Pharaoh) from them. It is he who has joined the Abet Crown to the Mat Crown, he knows your beautiful names, which you made when you were the Only One in the sky in your name of ‘Creator whose heart does not rest.’ “All the gods cry, ‘Hail,’ and they adore their Lord, the Only One, who is more hidden than his creations, who ruled this earth when he appeared from out of the water, who enveloped with fire the impotent one, and drove him away in his name of ‘Kaf.’ “Behold, do not give Pharaoh to that Enemy who is in the front of ..., nor to the red fiends, nor to the children of Set, nor to the ..., nor to the children of impotent revolt. Protect him, for you are his protector, guard him, for you are his guard, O Creator of the gods, and fashion his face with life and serenity, and let him never, never die.” Another Daily Morning Hymn to Amen. The following shall be said: “Watch well, O Amen-Ra Heru-Khuti Tem Khepera Heru, traverse the sky, O Great Hawk, who makes happy the body. Beautiful Face with the plumes of Maat, O Prince, when you watch (or, awake) happily each morning the whole Company of the Gods say to you, ‘Hail!’ and they cry out joyfully to you at eventide. “The star Kenemti addresses supplication to you as you lie on your couch conceiving [yourself], and the earth becomes light at your birth. Your mother smells (or, nurses) you every day. Ra lives and the fiend Nekau dies; you are stable and your enemies fall. “You traverse the upper heavens in life and serenity, you make festal the sky in the Atet Boat, you pass the day in your Boat, and your heart is glad. Maat rises up before you, Ra rolls up into the sky, your horizon shines with brilliant light. “The mariners of Ra rejoice, the sky and the earth are glad, the Great Company of the Gods sing songs of praise, saying, ‘Amen-Ra Heru-Khuti appears as one whose word is law.’” To be said four times.
Presenting Maat
6The Chapter of Presenting Maat. The following shall be said: “I have come to you. I am Thoth, and my two hands are joined under Maat. Homage to you, Amen-Ra, holy god, Lord of eternity! He joins himself to the upper sky, rising in the Disk each morning. He unbolts the two horizons, even as does the god Ubeni, he illumines the two Qerti [in the Tuat], and guides his body to the gods, and those who are in it look upon his divine Form when he sends round him the splendour of his two eyes. “Divine Child that dwells in Khemennu (Hermopolis), Holy Youth of the Eight Gods, you are the Ram-god who shoots out his emissions in Tetet city, whose terror is in the heart of the gods. You are the Chief of the city of Nart, the Creator of the food of all the Company of the Gods, and you make no distinction between one god and another among them. “Maat has come that she may be with you. Maat is in every place of yours so that you may rest upon her. The beings of the Circle of the heavens have their hands [stretched out] to praise you every day. You have given breath to every nostril to vivify that which you made with your two hands. You are the God who creates with your two hands; besides yourself there is no other. “Homage to you! You are provided with Maat, Creator of things which are, Maker of things which shall be. You are the Beneficent God, Meriti; you are content when the gods make offerings [to you]. You go onward in Maat, you live in Maat, you unite your members to Maat, you cause Maat to rest on your head, and she makes her seat to be on your brow. “You renew your youth when you see your daughter Maat, and you live by the odour of her moisture. Maat places herself as an amulet on your neck, and she rests on your breast. The gods serve you and offer gifts to you in Maat, for they know her character (?). Truly the gods and the goddesses who are in you possess Maat, and they know that you live in her. “Your right eye is in Maat, your left eye is in Maat, your flesh and your members are in Maat, the breath of your body and your heart are of Maat. You traverse the Two Lands having Maat, you have anointed your head with Maat, you journey on your two hands having Maat, your Asnet bandlet is of Maat, the clothing of your members is of Maat, your food is of Maat, your drink is of Maat, your bread is of Maat, your beer is of Maat, the incense which you inhale is of Maat, and the breath of your nostrils is of Maat. “Tem comes to you having Maat, you alone look upon Maat, Shu, the son of Ra, your priest, makes Maat to be in the book of your possessions, and you have peace and flourish through her. Maat bears you up, her two hands being before your face, and your heart is happy through her. “The two halves of the earth come to you bearing Maat, to give you the whole of the circuit of the Disk (Aten). You are the One Alone who bears up the sky, O Amen-Ra. Maat unites herself to your Disk, O you who are great, O you who are mighty, the Lord of the gods. Maat is among the Company of the gods [when] they are gathered together. Maat comes to you and repulses your evils, and she makes the Urertu Crown to be on your head. “The Majesty of Ra Heru-Khuti rises, and he makes Maat to be for you in your Two Great Lands. Thoth presents Maat to you, and his two hands are upon her beauty before your face. Your Ka is to you when Maat praises you, and when your members unite with Maat. You rejoice, you become young at the sight of her, the heart of Amen-Ra lives when Maat rises before him. “Your daughter Maat is in front of the Sekti Boat, and she is the One Alone who is in your cabin.
