The words of Enoch's blessing, with which he blessed the chosen and righteous, who will live through the days of tribulation when all the wicked and godless will be removed.[1] 2 He began his parable and said, Enoch, a righteous man, whose eyes were opened by God, saw the vision of the Holy One in the heavens, shown to him by the angels. He heard everything from them, and from them he understood what he saw, not for his own generation, but for a distant one yet to come.[2] 3 Regarding the chosen, he spoke and taught about them: The Holy Great One will emerge from His dwelling,[3] 4 And the eternal God will walk upon the earth, even on Mount Sinai, and appear from His camp and reveal His might from the heavens above.[4] 5 Everyone will be struck with fear and the Watchers will tremble, and great fear and trembling will grip them to the ends of the earth.[5] 6 The high mountains will shake, the hills will be leveled, and they will melt like wax before the fire[6] 7 The earth will be completely torn apart, and everything on it will perish, and there will be judgment upon all people. 8 But with the righteous, He will establish peace. He will protect the chosen, and mercy will be upon them. They will all belong to God, prosper, and be blessed. He will aid them, and light will shine for them, and He will make peace with them.[7] 9 Behold! He comes with tens of thousands of His holy ones to pass judgment upon all, to annihilate all the wicked, to convict every soul of all the godless deeds they have committed, and of all the harsh words that godless sinners have spoken against Him.[8]
Observe everything that occurs in the heaven, how the celestial bodies do not alter their paths, and the luminaries in the sky, how they all rise and set orderly, each in its own season, without deviating from their assigned courses.[9] 2 Look at the earth, and pay attention to the things that unfold from beginning to end, how consistent they are, how nothing on earth changes, how all of God’s works appear to you. 3 Observe the summer and winter, how the entire earth is filled with water, and how clouds, dew, and rain cover it.
Observe and notice how, during winter, all the trees appear as if they have withered and lost all their leaves, except for fourteen trees that do not shed their foliage but keep the old leaves for two to three years until the new ones arrive.
And again, observe the days of summer how the sun is high above the earth. You seek shade and shelter due to the sun's intense heat, and the ground also burns with growing heat, so you cannot walk on the earth or on a rock because of its heat.[10]
Observe how the trees clothe themselves in green leaves and produce fruit: therefore, pay attention and understand all His creations, and realize how the Eternal One has made them so. 2 And all His works continue year after year forever, and all the tasks they perform for Him, and their tasks do not change, but happen just as God has decreed. 3 And see how the sea and the rivers also fulfill their tasks unchangingly according to His commands.[11] 4 But you have not remained faithful, nor have you obeyed the Lord's commandments. Instead, you have turned away and spoken arrogantly and harshly with your impure mouths against His greatness. Oh, you stubborn-hearted, you will find no peace.[12] 5 Therefore, you will curse your own days, and the years of your life will vanish, and the years of your doom will increase in eternal condemnation, and you will find no mercy. 6 In those days, your names will become a curse forever to all the righteous, and all who curse will use your name, and all the sinners and the godless will swear by your name.[13] 7 And all the righteous will rejoice, and there will be forgiveness of sins, and every kind of mercy and peace and tolerance: There will be salvation for them, a splendid light. And for you sinners, there will be no salvation, but a curse will remain on you all.[14] 8 And for you, the godless, there will be a curse. 9 But for the chosen, there will be light, joy, and peace, and they shall inherit the earth.[15] 10 And then wisdom will be granted to the chosen, and they will all live and never sin again, neither through ungodliness nor through pride; but those who are wise will be humble. 11 And they will not transgress again, nor will they sin all the days of their life, nor will they die of divine anger or wrath, but they will complete the number of their days. And their lives will be lengthened in peace, and the years of their joy will be multiplied, in eternal happiness and peace, all the days of their life.
And it came to pass when the population of humans had increased during those times, beautiful and attractive daughters were born to them.[16] 2 And the angels, the children of heaven, saw them and desired them, and said to each other: 'Come, let us choose wives from among the humans and father children.'[17] 3 And Semjâzâ, their leader, said to them: 'I fear that you will not actually agree to do this, and I alone will have to pay the penalty of a great sin.' 4 And they all replied to him and said: 'Let us all take an oath, and all bind ourselves with a solemn promise not to abandon this plan but to carry out this act.' 5 Then they all took an oath together and bound themselves with a solemn promise to do so. 6 And there were in total two hundred who descended on the summit of Mount Hermon in the days of Jared, and they named it Mount Hermon because they had taken an oath and bound themselves with solemn promises there.[18] 7 And these are the names of their leaders: Semjâzâ, their leader, Arâkîba, Râmêal, Kôkabîal, Tâmîal, Râmîal, Dânal, Êzêqêal, Barâqîjâl, Asâal, Armâros, Batârêal, Anânêal, Zaqîêal, Samsâpêal, Satarêal, Tûrêal, Jômjâal, Sarîêal.[19] 8 These are their chiefs of tens.
And all the others them took wives for themselves, each choosing one for himself, and they began to unite with them and defiled themselves with them. They taught them sorcery, spells, and the art of extracting medicinal substances from plants.[20] 2 The women became pregnant and gave birth to enormous giants, whose height was three thousand ells.[21] 3 These giants consumed everything humans produced. And when humans could no longer support them, 4 the giants turned against them and devoured mankind. 5 They began to sin against birds, beasts, reptiles, and fish, eating each other’s flesh and drinking the blood. 6 Then the earth brought charges against these lawbreakers.[22]
And Azâzal taught men to make swords, knives, shields, and breastplates, and revealed to them the metals of the earth and how to work with them, as well as how to make bracelets, ornaments, and the use antimony, beautifying the eyelids, along with all kinds of precious stones and various dyes.[23] 2 Widespread wickedness arose, and they engaged in fornication, were led astray, and corrupted all their ways. Semjâzâ taught spells and the cutting of roots, Armârôs taught how to break spells, Barâqîjâl taught astrology, Kôkabîal taught about the constellations, Ezêqêal taught about the clouds, Araqiêal taught the signs of the earth, Shamsiêal taught the signs of the sun, and Sariêal taught the course of the moon. And as men died, they cried out, and their cries ascended to heaven.[24]
And then Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel looked down from heaven and saw much blood being shed on the earth, and all lawlessness being committed on the earth.[25] 2 And they said to one another: 'The earth, left without inhabitants, cries out, and the voice of their crying reaches the gates of heaven.'[26] 3 'And now to you, the holy ones of heaven, the souls of men plead, saying, "Present our case before the Most High."'[27] 4 And they said to the Lord of the ages: 'Lord of lords, God of gods, King of kings, and God of the ages, the throne of Your glory stands through all generations, and Your name is holy and glorious and blessed through all ages![28] 5 You have created all things, and over all things, You have power: all things are open and visible in Your sight, and You see all things, and nothing can hide from You.[29] 6 You see what Azâzal has done, who has taught all unrighteousness on earth and revealed the eternal secrets that were kept in heaven, which men were eager to learn:[30] 7 And Semjâzâ, to whom You gave authority to lead his companions. 8 And they have gone to the daughters of men on the earth, and have lain with the women, and have defiled themselves, and revealed to them all kinds of sins. 9 And the women have borne giants, and the whole earth has been filled with blood and unrighteousness as a result. 10 And now, behold, the souls of those who are dead are crying and pleading to the gates of heaven, and their lamentations have risen: and cannot stop because of the lawless acts that are committed on the earth.[31] 11 And You know all things before they happen, and You see these things and You allow them, and You do not tell us what we should do regarding them.'[32]
Then the Most High, the Holy and Great One spoke, and sent Uriel to the son of Lamech, saying to him:[33] 2 'Go to Noah and tell him in my name to hide himself and reveal to him that the end is near: the entire earth will be destroyed, a deluge is about to cover the whole earth and will wipe out everything on it.[34] 3 And now instruct him so that he may escape and his descendants may be preserved for all future generations.' 4 And the Lord also said to Raphael: 'Bind Azâzal hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: make a hole in the desert in Dûdâel, and throw him in.[35] 5 Place upon him rough and jagged rocks, cover him with darkness, and let him remain there forever, and cover his face so he may not see light. 6 On the day of great judgment he shall be thrown into the fire. And restore the earth which the angels have corrupted, and announce the restoration of the earth, so that the plague may be healed, and all the children of men may not perish due to the secrets that the Watchers have revealed and taught their children.'[36] 8 The entire earth has been corrupted by the deeds taught by Azâzal: attribute all sin to him.' 9 And to Gabriel, the Lord said: 'Proceed against the bastards, the outcasts, and the children of fornication: and destroy them; make them fight one another, so they may destroy each other in battle: for they shall not have long lives.[37] 10 And no request made by their fathers on their behalf will be granted; for they hope to live an eternal life, and each one of them thinks he will live five hundred years.'[38] 11 And the Lord said to Michael: 'Go, bind Semjâzâ and his companions who have joined with women and defiled themselves with them in all their uncleanness. 12 And when their sons have killed each other, and they have seen the destruction of their loved ones, bind them fast for seventy generations in the valleys of the earth, until the day of their judgment and their ultimate end, until the judgment that lasts forever is completed.[39] 13 In those days they will be taken to the abyss of fire: to the torment and the prison where they will be confined forever. And whoever is condemned and destroyed will henceforth be bound together with them till the end of all ages.[40] 15 And destroy all the spirits of the corrupt and the children of the Watchers, because they have wronged mankind. Remove all evil from the face of the earth and let every wicked deed end: and let the plants of righteousness and truth emerge; and let them be a blessing. The deeds of righteousness and truth will be planted in truth and joy forevermore.[41] 17 And then all the righteous will escape, And shall live until they beget thousands of children, And all the days of their youth and their old age Shall be completed in peace. 18 And then the whole earth will be cultivated in righteousness, and will be entirely planted with trees and filled with blessings. 19 And all desirable trees will be planted on it, and they will plant vines on it: the vine they plant will produce abundant wine, and for every measure of seeds sown on it, a thousand will be harvested, and every measure of olives will produce ten presses of oil. 20 And cleanse the earth from all oppression, from all injustice, from all sin, and from all godlessness: and all the uncleanness that has been wrought upon the earth, remove it from the earth.[42] 21 'And all the children of men shall become righteous, and all nations shall worship and praise Me, and all shall worship Me. And the earth shall be cleansed from all contamination, from all sin, from all punishment, and from all torment, and I will never again send these upon it from generation to generation and forever.'[43]
And in those days, I will open the storehouses of blessings that are in heaven, so as to send them down upon the earth to bless the work and labor of the children of men.[44] 2 And truth and peace will be joined together throughout all the days of the world and through all the generations of men.
Before these things, Enoch was hidden, and no one among the children of men knew where he was hidden, where he lived, or what had happened to him.[45] 2 His dealings were with the Watchers, and he spent his days among the holy ones. 3 And I, Enoch, was praising the Lord of majesty and the King of the ages, and lo! the Watchers called me - Enoch the scribe - and said to me:[46] 4 'Enoch, you scribe of righteousness, go, tell the Watchers of heaven who have left the high heaven, the holy eternal place, and have defiled themselves with women, and have acted as the children of earth do, and have taken wives for themselves: You have caused great destruction on the earth:[47] 5 And you shall have no peace or forgiveness of sin; and as much as you delight in your children, 6 You will witness the murder of your beloved ones, and you will mourn over the destruction of your children, and you will plead forever, but you will not find mercy or peace.'
And Enoch went and said: 'Azâzal, you shall have no peace: a severe sentence has been issued against you to put you in chains: 2 And you shall not be tolerated nor will your requests be granted, because of the unrighteousness that you have taught, and because of all the acts of godlessness, unrighteousness, and sin that you have shown to men.' 3 Then I went and spoke to them all together, and they were all afraid, and fear and trembling seized them. 4 And they begged me to write a petition for them that they might find forgiveness, and to read their petition in the presence of the Lord of heaven.[48] 5 For from then on, they could not speak or lift up their eyes to heaven because of the shame of their sins for which they had been condemned.[49] 6 Then I wrote out their petition, and the prayer regarding their spirits and their deeds, and regarding their requests for forgiveness and a longer lifespan.[50] 7 And I went off and sat down by the waters of Dan, in the land of Dan, to the south of the west of Hermon; I read their petition until I fell asleep. 8 And behold, a dream came to me, and visions fell upon me, and I saw visions of punishment, and a voice commanded me to tell it to the sons of heaven, and reprimand them. 9 And when I awoke, I came to them, and they were all sitting gathered together, weeping in 'Abelsjâêl, which is between Lebanon and Sênesêar, with their faces covered. 10 And I recounted to them all the visions that I had seen in sleep, and I began to speak words of righteousness, and to reprimand the heavenly Watchers.
The book of the words of righteousness, and of the reprimand of the eternal Watchers in accordance with the command of the Holy Great One in that vision.[51] 2 I saw in my sleep what I will now speak with a tongue of flesh and with the breath of my mouth: which the Great One has granted to men to converse with and understand with the heart. 3 As He has created and granted to man the power of understanding the word of wisdom, so has He created me also and given me the power of reprimanding the Watchers, the children of heaven.[52] 4 I wrote out your petition, and in my vision, it was clear that your petition will not be granted throughout all the days of eternity, and that judgment has been finally passed upon you; your petition will not be granted.[53] 5 And from now on you shall not ascend into heaven for all eternity, and on the earth, the decree has been issued to bind you for all the days of the world.[54] 6 And previously you shall have seen the destruction of your beloved sons and you shall take no pleasure in them, but they shall fall before you by the sword. 7 And your petition on their behalf shall not be granted, nor yet on your own, even though you weep and pray and speak all the words contained in the writing which I have written. 8 And the vision was shown to me: Behold, in the vision clouds called me and a mist summoned me, and the course of the stars and the lightnings sped and hastened me, and the winds in the vision caused me to fly and lifted me upward, and took me into heaven.[55] 9 And I went in until I drew near to a wall built of crystals and surrounded by tongues of fire: and it began to frighten me. And I entered the tongues of fire and drew near to a large house built of crystals: and the walls of the house were like a mosaic floor of crystals, and its foundation was of crystal.[56] 10 Its ceiling was like the path of the stars and the lightnings, and between them were fiery cherubim, and their heaven was clear as water.[57] 11 A flaming fire surrounded the walls, and its portals blazed with fire. 12 And I entered into that house, and it was hot as fire and cold as ice: there were no delights of life therein: fear covered me, and trembling seized me. 13 And as I shook and trembled, I fell upon my face. 14 And I saw a vision, and there it was, a second house, greater than the former, and the entire portal was open before me, and it was built of flames of fire.[58] 15 And in every way it so excelled in splendor and magnificence and size that I cannot describe to you its splendor and its size. 16 And its floor was of fire, and above it were lightnings and the path of the stars, and its ceiling also was flaming fire. 17 And I looked and saw therein a lofty throne: its appearance was as crystal, and the wheels thereof as the shining sun, and there was the vision of cherubim.[59] 18 And from underneath the throne came streams of flaming fire so that I could not look upon it.[60] 19 And the Great Glory sat on it, and His garment shone more brightly than the sun and was whiter than any snow.[61] 20 None of the angels could enter and could behold His face because of the magnificence and glory and no flesh could behold Him.[62] 21 The flaming fire was all around Him, and a great fire stood before Him, and no one around could draw near Him: ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him, yet He needed no counselor.[63] 22 And the most holy ones who were near to Him did not leave by night nor depart from Him. 23 And until then I had been prostrate on my face, trembling: and the Lord called me with His own mouth, and said to me: 'Come near, Enoch, and hear my word.' 24 And one of the holy ones came to me and woke me, and He made me rise up and approach the door: and I bowed my face downwards.[64]
And He answered and said to me, and I heard His voice: 'Fear not, Enoch, you righteous man and scribe of righteousness: come closer and hear my voice.[65] 2 And go, say to the Watchers of heaven, who have sent you to intercede for them: "You should be interceding for men, not men for you:" 3 Why have you left the high, holy, and eternal heaven, and lain with women, and defiled yourselves with the daughters of men, taken yourselves wives, and done like the children of earth, and fathered giants as your sons? 4 And though you were holy, spiritual, living the eternal life, you have defiled yourselves with the blood of women, and fathered children with the blood of flesh, and, like the children of men, have lusted after flesh and blood as those also do who die and perish.[66] 5 Therefore I have given them wives also that they might impregnate them, and beget children by them, that thus nothing might be lacking to them on earth. 6 But you were formerly spiritual, living the eternal life, and immortal for all generations of the world. 7 And therefore I have not appointed wives for you; for the spiritual ones of heaven, in heaven is their dwelling.[67] 8 And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling. 9 Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men, and from the holy Watchers is their beginning and primal origin; they shall be evil spirits on earth, and evil spirits shall they be called. 10 As for the spirits of heaven, in heaven shall be their dwelling, but as for the spirits of the earth which were born upon the earth, on the earth shall be their dwelling. 11 And the spirits of the giants afflict, oppress, destroy, attack, do battle, and work destruction on the earth, and cause trouble: they take no food, but nevertheless hunger and thirst, and cause offences. And these spirits shall rise up against the children of men and against the women, because they have proceeded from them.
From the days of the slaughter and destruction and death of the giants, from whose flesh the spirits have emerged, they will destroy without facing judgment—thus they will destroy until the day of the final judgment, when the era will end, encompassing both the Watchers and the godless, and indeed, it shall be completely finished.[68] 2 And now, regarding the Watchers who sent you to intercede for them, who were formerly in heaven, tell them: 'You were in heaven, yet not all mysteries were revealed to you, and you learned worthless things. You taught these things to women through the hardness of your hearts, and because of these mysteries, both women and men commit much evil on earth.' 3 Therefore, say to them: 'You have no peace.'
And they brought me to a place where those present were like flaming fire, and when they wished, they appeared as men.[69] 2 And they led me to a place of darkness, and to a mountain whose peak reached to heaven.[70] 3 And I saw the places of the sun and moon and the treasuries of the stars and of the thunder in the utmost depths, where there was a fiery bow and arrows and their quiver, and a fiery sword and all the lightnings.[71] 4 And they took me to the living waters, and to the fire of the west, which receives every setting of the sun.[72] 5 And I came to a river of fire where the fire flows like water and pours into the great sea towards the west. 6 I saw the great rivers and came to the great river and to the great darkness, and went to the place where no flesh walks. 7 I saw the mountains of the darkness of winter and the place from where all the waters of the deep flow. 8 I saw the mouths of all the rivers of the earth and the mouth of the deep.
I saw the treasuries of all the winds: I saw how He had equipped them for the whole creation and the firm foundations of the earth.[73] 2 And I saw the cornerstone of the earth: I saw the four winds that support the earth and the firmament of heaven.[74] 3 And I saw how the winds stretch out the vaults of heaven and have their station between heaven and earth; these are the pillars of heaven. 4 I saw the winds of heaven which turn and guide the course of the sun and all the stars to their setting. 5 I saw the winds on the earth carrying the clouds; I saw the paths of the angels. I saw at the end of the earth the firmament of heaven above. And I proceeded and saw a place that burns day and night, where there are seven mountains of magnificent stones, three towards the east, and three towards the south. 6 And as for those towards the east, one was of colored stone, and one of pearl, and one of jacinth, and those towards the south of red stone. 7 But the middle one reached to heaven like the throne of God, of alabaster, and the summit of the throne was of sapphire.[75] 8 And I saw a flaming fire. And beyond these mountains 9 is a region at the end of the great earth: there the heavens were completed. 10 And I saw a deep abyss, with columns of heavenly fire, and among them I saw columns of fire fall, which were beyond measure alike in height and depth. 11 And beyond that abyss I saw a place which had no firmament of heaven above, and no firmly founded earth beneath it; there was no water upon it, and no birds, but it was a waste and horrible place.[76] 12 I saw there seven stars like great burning mountains, and to me, when I inquired about them,[77] 13 The angel said: 'This place is the end of heaven and earth; this has become a prison for the stars and the host of heaven.[78] 14 And the stars which roll over the fire are those which have transgressed the command of the Lord at the beginning of their rising, because they did not come forth at their appointed times.[79] 15 And He was angry with them, and bound them until the time when their guilt should be consummated, even for ten thousand years.'[80]
And Uriel said to me: 'Here shall stand the angels who have united with women, and their spirits, taking many different forms, are corrupting mankind and leading them astray to worship demons as gods. Here they shall remain until the day of the great judgment when they will be judged and brought to an end.[81] 2 And the women of the angels who went astray will become sirens.'[82] 3 And I, Enoch, alone saw the vision, the ends of all things: and no man shall see as I have seen.
And these are the names of the holy angels who watch. 2 Uriel, one of the holy angels, who is over the world and over Tartarus.[83] 3 Raphael, one of the holy angels, who is over the spirits of men. 4 Raguel, one of the holy angels who takes vengeance on the world of the luminaries. 5 Michael, one of the holy angels, to wit, he that is set over the best part of mankind and over chaos. 6 Saraqâel, one of the holy angels, who is set over the spirits, who sin in the spirit. 7 Gabriel, one of the holy angels, who is over Paradise and the serpents and the Cherubim. 8 Remiel, one of the holy angels, whom God set over those who rise.
And I proceeded to where things were chaotic. 2 And I saw there something horrible: I saw neither a heaven above nor a firmly founded earth, but a place chaotic and horrible. 3 And there I saw seven stars of heaven bound together in it, like great mountains and burning with fire.[84] 4 Then I said: 'For what sin are they bound, and on what account have they been cast in here?'[85] 5 Then said Uriel, one of the holy angels who was with me and was chief over them, and said: 'Enoch, why do you ask, and why are you eager for the truth?[86] 6 These are of the number of the stars of heaven, which have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and are bound here until ten thousand years, the time entailed by their sins, are consummated.'[87] 7 And from there I went to another place, which was still more horrible than the former, and I saw a horrible thing: a great fire there which burned and blazed, and the place was cleft as far as the abyss, being full of great descending columns of fire: neither its extent or magnitude could I see, nor could I conjecture. 8 Then I said: 'How fearful is the place and how terrible to look upon!' 9 Then Uriel answered me, one of the holy angels who was with me, and said unto me: 'Enoch, why do you have such fear and fright?' And I answered: 'Because of this fearful place, and because of the spectacle of the pain.' 10 And he said to me: 'This place is the prison of the angels, and here they will be imprisoned forever.'[88]
And from there I went to another place, a mountain made of hard rock. 2 And there were four deep, wide, and very smooth hollow places in it. How smooth and deep and dark they are to look at. 3 Then Raphael, one of the holy angels who was with me, said to me: 'These hollow places have been created specifically for the spirits of the souls of the dead to gather. 4 They are meant to assemble here until the day of their judgement and until their appointed time, until the great judgement comes upon them.' I saw the spirit of a dead man pleading, 5 and his voice rose to heaven and made a plea. And I asked Raphael the angel who was 6 with me, and I said to him: 'This spirit that pleads, whose is it, whose voice rises and makes a plea to heaven?' 7 And he answered me saying: 'This is the spirit of Abel, whom his brother Cain killed, and he pleads against him until his seed is wiped from the face of the earth, and his descendants are destroyed among the seed of men.' 8 Then I asked about it, and about all the hollow places: 'Why is one separated from the other?' 9 And he answered me and said: 'These three have been made so that the spirits of the dead might be separated. And such a division has been made for the spirits of the righteous, which includes the bright spring of[89] 10 water. And one has been made for sinners when they die and are buried in the earth and judgement has not been executed on them in their 11 lifetime. Here their spirits shall be kept in great pain until the great day of judgement and punishment and torment of those who are cursed forever, and retribution for their spirits. There[90] 12 they shall be bound forever. And such a division has been made for the spirits of those who make their plea, who testify about their destruction, when they were killed in the days 13 of the sinners. Such has been made for the spirits of men who were not righteous but sinners, who were complete in transgression, and they shall be companions of the transgressors; but their spirits shall not be slain on the day of judgement nor shall they be raised from there.' 14 Then I blessed the Lord of glory and said: 'Blessed be my Lord, the Lord of righteousness, who rules forever.'
From there I went to another place to the west of the ends of the earth. 2 And I saw a burning fire which ran without resting, and paused not from its course day or night but ran regularly. 3 And I asked saying: 'What is this that does not rest?' 4 Then Raguel, one of the holy angels who was with me, answered me and said to me: 'This course of fire which you have seen is the fire in the west that pursues all the luminaries of heaven.'
And from there I went to another place on the earth, and he showed me a mountain range of fire that burned day and night. 2 I went beyond it and saw seven magnificent mountains, each distinct from the others, with stones that were magnificent and beautiful, overall glorious in appearance and fair exterior: three towards the east, stacked one on top of the other, and three towards the south, each one upon the other, with deep rough ravines, none of which connected with any other.[91] 3 The seventh mountain was in the midst of these, and it was the tallest, resembling the seat of a throne, with fragrant trees encircling the throne.[92] 4 Among these trees was one that I had never smelled before, unlike any other; it had a scent beyond all scents, and its leaves, blooms, and wood never wither; its fruit was beautiful and resembled the dates of a palm. 5 Then I said: 'How beautiful is this tree, and fragrant, with fair leaves and blooms very delightful in appearance.' 6 Then Michael, one of the holy and honored angels who was with me and was their leader, answered.
And he said to me: 'Enoch, why do you ask me about the fragrance of the tree, and why do you wish to learn the truth?' Then I answered him saying: 'I want to know about everything, but especially about this tree.' And he answered saying: 'This high mountain which you have seen, whose summit is like the throne of God, is His throne, where the Holy Great One, the Lord of Glory, the Eternal King, will sit when He comes down to visit the earth with goodness. 2 And as for this fragrant tree, no mortal is allowed to touch it until the great judgment, when He will take vengeance on all and bring everything to its consummation forever. It will then be given to the righteous and holy. 3 Its fruit will be food for the elect: it will be transplanted to the holy place, to the temple of the Lord, the Eternal King.[93] 4 Then they will rejoice with joy and be glad, and they will enter the holy place; its fragrance will be in their bones, and they will live a long life on earth, such as your ancestors lived: and in their days, no sorrow or plague or torment or calamity will touch them.' 5 Then I blessed the God of Glory, the Eternal King, who has prepared such things for the righteous, and has created them and promised to give them to them.[94]
And I went from there to the middle of the earth, and I saw a blessed place where trees with branches were abiding and blooming [from a dismembered tree].[95] 2 And there I saw a holy mountain, and beneath the mountain to the east there was a stream that flowed towards the south.[96] 3 And I saw towards the east another mountain higher than this, and between them a deep and narrow ravine: in it also a stream ran beneath the mountain. 4 And to the west of this was another mountain, lower than the former and of small elevation, and a deep and dry ravine between them: and another deep and dry ravine was at the extremities of the three mountains. 5 And all the ravines were deep and narrow, (being formed) of hard rock, and no trees were planted upon them. 6 And I marveled at the rocks, and I marveled at the ravine, yes, I marveled very much.
Then I said: 'For what purpose is this blessed land, which is entirely filled with trees, and this cursed valley between them?' 2 Then Uriel, one of the holy angels who was with me, answered and said: 'This cursed valley is for those who are cursed forever: Here shall all the cursed be gathered who speak unseemly words against the Lord with their lips and speak harshly of His glory. Here shall they be gathered together, and here shall be their place of judgment.'[97] 3 In the last days, there shall be the spectacle of righteous judgment in the presence of the righteous forever: here the merciful shall bless the Lord of glory, the Eternal King. Here shall they be gathered together, and here shall be the place of their habitation. 4 In the last times, in the days of the true judgment in the presence of the righteous forever: here shall the godly bless the Lord of Glory, the Eternal King. 5 In the days of judgment over the former, they shall bless Him for the mercy by which He has assigned them their lot.' 6 Then I blessed the Lord of Glory and extolled His glory and praised Him gloriously.
And from there I went towards the east, into the midst of the mountain range of the desert, and I saw a wilderness that was solitary, full of trees and plants. 2 Water gushed forth from above. 3 Rushing like a copious watercourse which flowed towards the northwest, it caused clouds and dew to ascend on every side.
And from there I went to another place in the desert, and approached the east of this mountain range. 2 There I saw aromatic trees exhaling the fragrance of frankincense and myrrh, and the trees also resembled almond trees.
And beyond these, I traveled far to the east, and I saw another place, a valley full of water. 2 There, there was a tree, the color of fragrant trees such as the mastic. 3 Along the sides of those valleys, I saw fragrant cinnamon. And beyond these, I continued to the east.
And I saw other mountains, and among them were groves of trees, from which flowed nectar, named sarara and galbanum. 2 Beyond these mountains, I saw another mountain to the east of the ends of the earth, where there were aloe trees, and all the trees were full of stacte, similar to almond trees. 3 And when burned, it smelled sweeter than any fragrant odor.
After these fragrant odors, as I looked towards the north over the mountains, I saw seven mountains full of choice nard, fragrant trees, cinnamon, and pepper. 2 To the northeast, I beheld seven mountains full of choice nard, mastic, cinnamon, and pepper. 3 And from there I went over the summits of all these mountains, far towards the east of the earth, and passed above the Erythraean sea and went far from it, and passed over the angel Zotêl. 4 And I came to the Garden of Righteousness, and beyond those trees, I saw many large trees growing there, fragrant, large, very beautiful, and glorious, including the tree of wisdom, from which they eat and gain great wisdom. 5 And I came to the Garden of Righteousness, and from afar off I saw trees more numerous than these, and among them were two very large, beautiful, glorious, and magnificent trees, including the tree of knowledge, whose holy fruit they eat and gain great wisdom. 6 That tree is as tall as a fir, and its leaves are like those of the Carob tree; its fruit is like the clusters of the vine, very beautiful, and the fragrance of the tree penetrates afar. 7 Then I said: 'How beautiful is the tree, and how attractive is its appearance!' 8 Then Raphael, the holy angel who was with me, answered and said: 'This is the tree of wisdom, which your father, old in years, and your aged mother, who were before you, have eaten from, and they gained wisdom, their eyes were opened, and they knew they were naked, and they were driven out of the garden.'
And from there I went to the ends of the earth and saw there great beasts, each differing from the other; and I saw birds also, differing in appearance, beauty, and voice, each distinct from the other. 2 And to the east of those beasts, I saw the ends of the earth where the heavens rest and the portals of heaven open. 3 And I saw how the stars of heaven come forth, and I counted the portals from which they emerge, and noted down all their outlets, each individual star by itself, according to their number and their names, their courses and their positions, and their times and their months, as Uriel the holy angel who was with me showed me.[98] 4 He showed me all things and wrote them down for me: also, he wrote down their names, their laws, and their companies.
And from there I went towards the north to the ends of the earth, and there I saw a great and glorious device at the ends of the whole earth. 2 And here I saw three portals of heaven open in the sky: through each of them north winds blow: when they blow, there is cold, hail, frost, snow, dew, and rain. 3 And from one portal they blow for good: but when they blow through the other two portals, it is with violence and affliction on the earth, and they blow with violence.
And from there I went towards the west to the ends of the earth, and saw there three portals of heaven open, similar to those I had seen in the east, with the same number of portals and the same number of outlets.
And from there I went to the south to the ends of the earth and saw there three open portals of heaven from which dew, rain, and wind emerge. 2 And from there I went to the east to the ends of heaven and observed here the three eastern portals of heaven open and small portals above them. 3 Through each of these small portals, the stars of heaven pass and run their course to the west on the path that is shown to them. 4 And as often as I saw, I always blessed the Lord of Glory, and I continued to bless the Lord of Glory who has wrought great and glorious wonders, to show the greatness of His work to the angels, spirits, and men, that they might praise His work and all His creation; that they might see the work of His might and praise the great work of His hands and bless Him forever.
The second vision which he saw, the vision of wisdom which Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Cainan, the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, saw.[99] 2 And this is the beginning of the words of wisdom which I raised my voice to speak and say to those who dwell on earth: Hear, you men of old time, and see, you who come after, the words of the Holy One which I will speak before the Lord of Spirits.[100] 3 It would be better to declare them only to the men of old time, but even from those who come after, we will not withhold the beginning of wisdom. 4 Until this day, such wisdom has never been given by the Lord of Spirits as I have received according to my insight, according to the good pleasure of the Lord of Spirits by whom the lot of eternal life has been given to me. 5 Now three parables were imparted to me, and I raised my voice and recounted them to those who dwell on the earth.
The First Parable. When the assembly of the righteous shall appear, and sinners shall be judged for their sins and shall be driven from the face of the earth: 2 And when the Righteous One shall appear before the eyes of the righteous, whose chosen deeds depend on the Lord of Spirits, and light shall appear to the righteous and the elect who dwell on the earth, where then will be the dwelling of the sinners, and where the resting-place of those who have denied the Lord of Spirits? It would have been better for them if they had not been born.[101] 3 When the secrets of the righteous are revealed and the sinners judged, and the godless driven from the presence of the righteous and elect, 4 From that time those who possess the earth shall no longer be powerful and exalted, and they shall not be able to behold the face of the holy, for the Lord of Spirits has caused His light to appear on the face of the holy, righteous, and elect.[102] 5 Then shall the kings and the mighty perish and be given into the hands of the righteous and holy. 6 And from then on, none shall seek mercy from the Lord of Spirits for their life, for their life is at an end.
And it shall come to pass in those days that elect and holy children will descend from the high heaven, and their seed will become one with the children of men. 2 And in those days Enoch received books of zeal and wrath, and books of disquiet and expulsion. And mercy shall not be accorded to them, says the Lord of Spirits. 3 And in those days a whirlwind carried me off from the earth, and set me down at the end of the heavens.[103] 4 And there I saw another vision, the dwelling places of the holy, and the resting places of the righteous.[104] 5 Here my eyes saw their dwellings with His righteous angels, and their resting places with the holy. And they petitioned and interceded and prayed for the children of men, and righteousness flowed before them as water, and mercy like dew upon the earth: Thus it is among them forever and ever.[105] 6 And in that place my eyes saw the Elect One of righteousness and of faith, 7 And righteousness shall prevail in his days, and the righteous and elect shall be without number before Him forever and ever. 8 And I saw his dwelling place under the wings of the Lord of Spirits. 9 And all the righteous and elect before Him shall be strong as fiery lights, and their mouth shall be full of blessing, and their lips extol the name of the Lord of Spirits, and righteousness before Him shall never fail, and uprightness shall never fail before Him. 10 There I wished to dwell, and my spirit longed for that dwelling place; and there heretofore has been my portion, for so it has been established concerning me before the Lord of Spirits.[106] 11 In those days I praised and extolled the name of the Lord of Spirits with blessings and praises, because He has destined me for blessing and glory according to the good pleasure of the Lord of Spirits.[107] 12 For a long time my eyes regarded that place, and I blessed Him and praised Him, saying: 'Blessed is He, and may He be blessed from the beginning and forevermore. 13 And before Him there is no ceasing. He knows before the world was created what is forever and what will be from generation to generation. 14 Those who never sleep bless You: they stand before your glory and bless, praise, and extol, saying: "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of Spirits: He fills the earth with spirits."'[108] 15 And here my eyes saw all those who never sleep: they stand before Him and bless and say: 'You are blessed, and blessed be the name of the Lord forever and ever.' 16 And my face was changed; for I could no longer behold.[109]
And after that, I saw thousands upon thousands and ten thousand times ten thousand, a multitude beyond number and reckoning, who stood before the Lord of Spirits.[110] 2 And on the four sides of the Lord of Spirits, I saw four presences, different from those that do not sleep, and I learned their names: for the angel who accompanied me made known to me their names, and showed me all the hidden things. 3 And I heard the voices of those four presences as they uttered praises before the Lord of glory. 4 The first voice blesses the Lord of Spirits forever and ever. 5 And the second voice I heard blessing the Elect One and the elect ones who depend on the Lord of Spirits. 6 And the third voice I heard pray and intercede for those who dwell on the earth and supplicate in the name of the Lord of Spirits. 7 And I heard the fourth voice fending off the Satans and forbidding them to come before the Lord of Spirits to accuse those who dwell on the earth.[111] 8 After that, I asked the angel of peace who went with me, who showed me everything that is hidden: 'Who are these four presences which I have seen and whose words I have heard and written down?'[112] 9 And he said to me: 'The first is Michael, the merciful and long-suffering; and the second, who is set over all the diseases and all the wounds of the children of men, is Raphael; and the third, who is set over all the powers, is Gabriel; and the fourth, who is set over the repentance unto hope of those who inherit eternal life, is named Phanuel.' And these are the four angels of the Lord of Spirits and the four voices I heard in those days.[113]
And then I witnessed all the mysteries of the heavens, how the kingdom is divided, and how the actions of people are weighed on a scale.[114] 2 There, I saw the dwellings of the chosen and the holy, and my eyes beheld all the sinners being expelled, those who deny the name of the Lord of Spirits, dragged away, unable to endure the punishment from the Lord of Spirits. 3 My eyes also saw the mysteries of lightning and thunder, and the secrets of the winds, how they are distributed to blow across the earth, and the mysteries of the clouds and dew, observing where they originate and how they moisten the dusty earth.[115] 4 I saw hidden chambers from which the winds are dispersed, the chamber for hail and winds, the chamber for mist, and of the clouds, with the cloud above floating over the earth since the beginning of time. 5 I observed the chambers of the sun and moon, where they emerge and return, their magnificent reappearance, how one surpasses the other in splendor, their majestic orbit, and how they remain faithful to their orbit, adding nothing and taking nothing from it, keeping their promise to each other, as per the oath that binds them.[116] 6 First, the sun emerges and follows its course as commanded by the Lord of Spirits, whose name is mighty forever and ever. 7 Then I saw the hidden and visible paths of the moon, as it completes its journey day and night—one position opposing the other—before the Lord of Spirits, offering thanks and praise without rest, for their rest is in their thanksgiving. 8 For the sun often changes for a blessing or a curse, and the path of the moon brings light to the righteous and darkness to the sinners in the name of the Lord, who separated the light from the darkness, divided the spirits of people, and strengthened the spirits of the righteous in the name of His righteousness.[117] 9 No angel can hinder nor any power obstruct; for He appoints a judge for them all and He judges them all before Him.[118]
Wisdom found no place where she might dwell; then a dwelling-place was assigned to her in the heavens.[119] 2 Wisdom went forth to make her dwelling among the children of men, and found no dwelling-place: Wisdom returned to her place, and took her seat among the angels.[120] 3 And unrighteousness went forth from her chambers: whom she did not seek, she found, and dwelt with them, like rain in a desert and dew on a thirsty land.[121]
And I saw other lightnings and the stars of heaven, and I saw how He called them all by their names and they listened to Him. 2 And I saw how they are weighed in a righteous balance according to their proportions of light: I observed the width of their spaces and the day of their appearing, and how their movements produce lightning, and their movements according to the number of the angels, and how they maintain faith with each other. 3 And I asked the angel who accompanied me and showed me what was hidden: 'What are these?' 4 And he said to me: 'The Lord of Spirits has shown you their symbolic meaning: these are the names of the holy who dwell on the earth and believe in the name of the Lord of Spirits forever and ever.'
Also, I observed another phenomenon regarding the lightnings: how some of the stars arise and transform into lightnings and cannot part from their new form.
This is the Second Parable concerning those who deny the name of the dwelling of the holy ones and the Lord of Spirits. 2 They shall not ascend into heaven, nor shall they come upon the earth: such is the fate of the sinners who have denied the name of the Lord of Spirits, who are set aside for the day of suffering and tribulation. 3 On that day, My Elect One shall sit on the throne of glory and shall judge their works, and their places of rest shall be innumerable. And their souls shall grow strong within them when they see My Elect Ones, and those who have called upon My glorious name.[122] 4 Then I will cause My Elect One to dwell among them. And I will transform the heaven and make it an eternal blessing and light.[123] 5 And I will transform the earth and make it a blessing; and I will cause My elect ones to dwell upon it. But the sinners and evildoers shall not set foot on it. 6 For I have provided and satisfied with peace My righteous ones and have caused them to dwell before Me. But for the sinners, there is judgment impending with Me, so that I shall destroy them from the face of the earth.[124]
And there I saw One who had a head of days, and His hair was white like wool. With Him was another being whose countenance resembled that of a man, and his face was full of graciousness, like one of the holy angels.[125] 2 And I asked the angel who accompanied me and showed me all the hidden things, about that Son of Man, who he was, where he was from, and why he accompanied the Head of Days? The angel answered and said to me: 'This is the Son of Man who possesses righteousness, with whom righteousness dwells, and who reveals all the hidden treasures, because the Lord of Spirits has chosen him, and his status is foremost before the Lord of Spirits in uprightness forever.'[126] 3 'And this Son of Man whom you have seen will raise up the kings and the mighty from their seats, and the strong from their thrones, will loosen the reins of the strong, and break the teeth of the sinners.'[127] 4 'And he shall depose the kings from their thrones and kingdoms because they do not praise and honor Him, nor humbly acknowledge where the kingdom was bestowed upon them.' 5 'And he shall humble the countenance of the strong, and fill them with shame. And darkness shall be their dwelling, and worms shall be their bed, and they shall have no hope of rising from their beds, because they do not praise the name of the Lord of Spirits.' 6 'And these are those who judge the stars of heaven, and raise their hands against the Most High, and tread upon the earth and dwell upon it. And all their deeds manifest unrighteousness, and their power rests on their riches, and their faith is in the gods which they have made with their hands, and they deny the name of the Lord of Spirits.' 7 'And they persecute the houses of His congregations, and the faithful who depend on the name of the Lord of Spirits.'[128]
And in those days, the prayers of the righteous and the blood of the righteous shall ascend from the earth before the Lord of Spirits. 2 In those days, the holy ones who dwell above in the heavens shall unite with one voice to supplicate, pray, praise, give thanks, and bless the name of the Lord of Spirits on behalf of the blood of the righteous that has been shed, so that the prayers of the righteous may not be in vain before the Lord of Spirits, that justice may be done for them, and that they may not suffer forever. 3 In those days, I saw the Head of Days when He seated himself upon the throne of His glory, and the books of the living were opened before Him; and all His host which is in heaven above and His counselors stood before Him.[129] 4 And the hearts of the holy were filled with joy because the number of the righteous had been offered, the prayer of the righteous had been heard, and the blood of the righteous had been required before the Lord of Spirits.[130]
In that place, I saw the fountain of righteousness which was inexhaustible; around it were many fountains of wisdom. All the thirsty drank from them, were filled with wisdom, and their dwellings were with the righteous, holy, and elect.[131] 2 At that time, the Son of Man was named in the presence of the Lord of Spirits, and his name was acknowledged before the Head of Days. 3 Yes, before the sun and the signs were created, before the stars of heaven were made, his name was known before the Lord of Spirits. 4 He will be a staff for the righteous to lean on and not fall, and he will be the light of the Gentiles, and the hope for those who are troubled of heart.[132] 5 All who dwell on earth shall bow and worship before him, and will praise, bless, and sing to celebrate the Lord of Spirits.[133] 6 For this reason, he has been chosen and hidden before Him, before the creation of the world and forevermore.[134] 7 The wisdom of the Lord of Spirits has revealed him to the holy and righteous; for he has preserved all of the righteous because they have hated and despised this world of unrighteousness, and have hated all its works and ways in the name of the Lord of Spirits: for in his name they are saved, and it has been according to his good pleasure in regard to their life.[135] 8 In these days, the kings of the earth who own the land will look downcast because of the works of their hands; for on the day of their trouble and affliction, they will not be able to save themselves. 9 And I will hand them over to the hands of my elect: as straw in the fire, they shall burn before the face of the holy; as lead in the water, they shall sink before the face of the righteous, and no trace of them shall be found anymore.[136] 10 On the day of their affliction, there shall be peace on the earth. They shall fall before them and not rise again; and there shall be no one to help them up, for they have denied the Lord of Spirits and His Anointed. Blessed be the name of the Lord of Spirits.[137]
For wisdom is poured out like water, and glory never fades before him forevermore. 2 For he is mighty in all the secrets of righteousness, and unrighteousness shall disappear like a shadow, and have no continuity; because the Elect One stands before the Lord of Spirits, and his glory lasts forever and ever, and his power through all generations. 3 And in him dwells the spirit of wisdom, the spirit that gives insight, the spirit of understanding and of might, and the spirit of those who have fallen asleep in righteousness.[138] 4 And he shall judge the hidden matters, and no one will be able to speak falsely before him; for he is the Elect One before the Lord of Spirits according to His good pleasure.[139]
And in those days a change shall take place for the holy and elect, and the light of days shall remain upon them, and glory and honor shall turn to the holy, 2 On the day of affliction when evil shall have been stored up against the sinners. And the righteous shall be victorious in the name of the Lord of Spirits: And He will cause the others to witness this that they may repent and abandon the works of their hands.[140] 3 They shall have no honor through the name of the Lord of Spirits, yet through His name they shall be saved, and the Lord of Spirits will have compassion on them, for His compassion is great.[141] 4 And He is righteous also in His judgment, and in the presence of His glory unrighteousness also shall not sustain itself: At His judgment the unrepentant shall perish before Him. 5 And from now on I will have no mercy on them, says the Lord of Spirits.
In those days, the earth will return what has been entrusted to it, and Sheol will also return what it has received, and the underworld will return what it owes.[142] 2 He will choose the righteous and holy from among them: for the day is near when they shall be saved.[143] 3 In those days, the Elect One shall sit on My throne, and his mouth shall reveal all the secrets of wisdom and counsel: for the Lord of Spirits has granted these to him and has honored him. 4 In those days, the mountains will leap like rams, and the hills will skip like lambs full of milk, and the faces of all the angels in heaven will shine with joy. 5 For in those days, the Elect One shall rise,[144] 6 And the earth shall rejoice, and the righteous shall live upon it, and the chosen shall walk there.
After those days in that place where I had seen all the hidden visions—carried off in a whirlwind, taken westward— 2 My eyes beheld all the secret celestial things that are to come: a mountain of iron, copper, silver, gold, soft metal, and lead.[145] 3 I asked the angel accompanying me, 'What are these things I have seen in secret?' 4 He replied, 'All that you have seen shall support the reign of His Anointed, empowering him greatly upon the earth.' 5 Then the angel of peace said to me, 'Wait a while, and all the secrets that surround the Lord of Spirits will be disclosed to you.' 6 The mountains you saw—the iron, copper, silver, gold, soft metal, and lead—will be as wax before the fire, and like water streaming down, becoming powerless before his feet.[146] 7 In those days, no one can be saved by gold or silver, and none will have the means to escape.[147] 8 There will be no iron for war, nor will anyone wear a breastplate. Bronze will be useless, and tin and lead will no longer be valued. 9 All these materials will be removed from the earth's surface when the Elect One stands before the Lord of Spirits.
There, my eyes saw a deep valley with open mouths, where all who live on earth, sea, and islands will bring gifts, presents, and tributes, yet the valley will never fill.[148] 2 They commit unlawful acts, and the sinners consume all they oppress unlawfully: yet, sinners will be destroyed from the presence of the Lord of Spirits, expelled from His earth, and they will be gone forever. 3 I saw all the angels of punishment waiting there, preparing all the instruments of Satan.[149] 4 I asked the angel of peace who accompanied me, 'For whom are they preparing these instruments?' 5 He replied, 'They are preparing these for the kings and the powerful of this earth, that they may be destroyed through them.' 6 Afterwards, the Righteous and Elect One will establish the house of his followers, and they will no longer be hindered in the name of the Lord of Spirits. 7 The mountains will not stand firm like the earth before his righteousness, but the hills will be like a fountain of water, and the righteous will rest from the oppression of sinners.'
And I looked and turned to another part of the earth, and saw there a deep valley with burning fire. 2 They brought the kings and the mighty, and began to throw them into this deep valley.[150] 3 There, my eyes saw how they made these instruments, iron chains of immense weight. 4 I asked the angel of peace who was with me, 'For whom are these chains being prepared?' 5 He said to me, 'These are being prepared for the hosts of Azâzêl, so they may take them and throw them into the abyss of complete condemnation, and they shall cover their jaws with rough stones as the Lord of Spirits commanded.'[151] 6 Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Phanuel will seize them on that great day, and throw them into the burning furnace, that the Lord of Spirits may avenge their wickedness in submitting to Satan and leading astray those who dwell on the earth.'[152] 7 'In those days, punishment will come from the Lord of Spirits, and he will open all the chambers of waters above the heavens, and the fountains beneath the earth. 8 And all the waters will merge: the water above the heavens is masculine, and the water beneath the earth is feminine.[153] 9 They will destroy all who live on the earth and those who live at the ends of the heaven. 10 And when they acknowledge their wrongdoing that they committed on the earth, by these they will perish.'
After that, the Head of Days felt remorse and said: 'In vain have I destroyed all who dwell on the earth.'[154] 2 He swore by His great name: 'From now on, I will not act this way towards all who dwell on the earth, and I will set a sign in the heavens: and this will be a pledge of good faith between Me and them forever, as long as heaven is above the earth. This is according to My command.'[155] 3 Whenever I wish to take hold of them by the hand of the angels on the day of trouble and pain, because of this, I will make My punishment and My wrath rest upon them, says God, the Lord of Spirits. 4 You mighty kings who dwell on the earth, you will witness My Chosen One, how he sits on the throne of glory and judges Azâzêl, and all his companions, and all his hosts in the name of the Lord of Spirits.'
And I saw there the hosts of the angels of punishment advancing, holding whips and chains of iron and bronze. 2 I asked the angel of peace accompanying me, 'Who are those holding the whips heading to?' 3 He replied, 'To their chosen and beloved ones, to cast them into the chasm of the abyss of the valley.' 4 Then that valley shall be filled with their chosen and beloved, and the days of their lives shall end, and the days of their deception will no longer be counted. 5 In those days, the angels shall return and rush to the east upon the Parthians and Medes: They shall stir up the kings, inciting a spirit of unrest among them, and rouse them from their thrones, that they may leap out like lions from their dens, and like hungry wolves into their flocks.[156] 6 They shall ascend and trample the land of His chosen ones, which shall become a threshing-floor and a highway under their feet. 7 But the city of my righteous shall obstruct their horses. They shall begin to fight among themselves, their own hands turning against each other, and a man will not recognize his brother, nor a son his father or his mother, until countless bodies fall by their own hands, and their destruction shall not be in vain.[157] 8 In those days, Sheol shall open its jaws, and they will be swallowed up. Their end will come; Sheol shall consume the sinners in the sight of the chosen.[158]
And it happened after that, I saw another group of chariots, with men riding them, arriving on the winds from the east, the west, and the south. 2 The sound of their chariots was heard, and when this disturbance occurred, the holy ones from heaven took notice, and the foundations of the earth shifted from their places, and the noise was heard from one end of the sky to the other, all in one day. 3 And everyone will fall down and worship the Lord of Spirits. And this marks the end of the second Parable.
And I began to speak the third Parable concerning the righteous and elect. 2 Blessed are you, righteous and elect, for glorious shall be your destiny. 3 The righteous will be in the light of the sun, and the elect in the light of eternal life; their days shall be endless, and the days of the holy beyond count.[159] 4 They shall seek the light and find righteousness with the Lord of Spirits; there shall be peace for the righteous in the name of the Eternal Lord.[160] 5 After this, it shall be said to the holy in heaven that they should seek out the secrets of righteousness, the heritage of faith; for it has become as bright as the sun upon earth, and the darkness has passed.[161] 6 There shall be a light that never ends, and they shall not experience a limit of days, for the darkness will have been destroyed, and the light established before the Lord of Spirits; the light of uprightness established forever before the Lord of Spirits.
In those days, my eyes saw the secrets of the lightnings and lights, and the judgments they carry out; they shine for a blessing or a curse as the Lord of Spirits wills. 2 There I saw the secrets of thunder, and how when it resounds above in the heaven, its sound is heard. He made me see the judgments executed on the earth, whether for well-being and blessing, or for a curse, according to the word of the Lord of Spirits.[162] 3 After that, all the secrets of the lights and lightnings were shown to me, and they shine for blessing and fulfillment.
In the year five hundred, in the seventh month, on the fourteenth day of the month in the life of Enoch. In that Parable, I saw how a mighty quaking made the heaven of heavens tremble, and the host of the Most High, and the angels, thousands upon thousands and tens of thousands times ten thousand, were greatly disturbed.[163] 2 The Head of Days sat on the throne of His glory, and the angels and the righteous stood around Him. 3 A great trembling seized me, fear took hold of me, my body weakened, my strength failed, and I fell face down. 4 Michael sent another angel from among the holy ones who lifted me up, and when he had raised me up my spirit returned; I had been overwhelmed by the sight of this host and the tumult and shaking of the heavens. And Michael said to me: 'Why are you disturbed by such a vision? Until today, this has been a time of mercy; He has been merciful and patient with those who dwell on the earth.' 5 And when the day of power, punishment, and judgment comes, which the Lord of Spirits has prepared for those who do not worship the righteous law, and for those who deny the righteous judgment, and for those who take His name in vain—that day is prepared, for the chosen a covenant, but for sinners an inquisition. 6 On that day, two great monsters were separated, a female monster named Leviathan, to dwell in the depths of the ocean over the springs of waters.[164] 7 The male is named Behemoth, who with his chest occupies a desolate wilderness named Dûidâin, east of the garden where the chosen and righteous dwell, where my grandfather was taken up, the seventh from Adam, the first man whom the Lord of Spirits created.[165] 8 I pleaded with the other angel to show me the power of these monsters, how they were separated on one day and thrown, one into the depths of the sea, and the other into the dry land of the wilderness. 9 He said to me: 'Son of man, you seek to know what is concealed.' 10 The other angel who went with me and showed me what was hidden told me what is first and last in the heights of heaven, and beneath the earth in the depths, and at the ends of heaven, and on the foundations of heaven. 11 The chambers of the winds, how the winds are divided, how they are weighed, how the portals of the winds are calculated, each according to the strength of the wind, and the power of the lights of the moon, and according to the power that is fitting; and the divisions of the stars according to their names, and how all the divisions are divided. 12 And the thunders according to where they fall, and all the divisions that are made among the lightnings to illuminate, and their host to instantly obey. 13 For the thunder has resting places assigned to it while it waits for its peal; thunder and lightning are inseparable, and though distinct, they both move together through the spirit and do not separate. 14 For when the lightning flashes, the thunder sounds, the spirit enforces a pause during the peal, and divides equally between them; for the storehouse of their peals is like the sand, and each peal is restrained by a bridle, turned back by the power of the spirit, and pushed forward according to the various quarters of the earth. The spirit of the sea is masculine and strong, and by the might of his strength it is drawn back with a rein, and similarly it is driven forward and disperses amid all the mountains of the earth. 15 And the spirit of the frost has its own angel, and the spirit of the hail is a good angel.[166] 16 And the spirit of the snow has left his chambers because of his strength—there is a special spirit in it, and what rises from it is like smoke, and its name is frost. 17 And the spirit of the mist is not joined with them in their chambers but has a special chamber; for its path is splendid both in light and in darkness, and in winter and in summer, and in its chamber is an angel. 18 And the spirit of the dew resides at the ends of heaven, and is connected with the chambers of the rain, and its path is in winter and summer: and its clouds and the clouds of the mist are connected, and one feeds the other. 19 And when the spirit of the rain moves out from its chamber, the angels come and open the chamber and lead it out, and when it spreads over the entire earth it mixes with the water on the earth. 20 For the waters are for those who dwell on the earth; they nourish the earth from the Most High who is in heaven: therefore there is a measure for the rain, and the angels are in charge of it. 21 And I saw these things toward the Garden of the Righteous. 22 And the angel of peace who was with me said to me: 'These two monsters, created according to the greatness of God, shall feed ... 23 When the punishment of the Lord of Spirits rests upon them, it is so that the punishment of the Lord of Spirits may not come in vain, and it shall slay the children with their mothers and the children with their fathers. Afterwards, the judgment shall occur according to His mercy and His patience.'
And I saw in those days how long cords were given to those angels, and they took to themselves wings and flew, heading north.[167] 2 I asked the angel, 'Why have those angels taken these cords and departed?' And he replied, 'They have gone to measure.'[168] 3 The angel who accompanied me said, 'These shall bring the measures of the righteous, and the ropes of the righteous to the righteous, that they may rely on the name of the Lord of Spirits forever and ever.' 4 The chosen will begin to dwell with the chosen, and these are the measures which shall be given to faith and which shall strengthen righteousness. 5 And these measures shall uncover all the secrets of the depths of the earth, and those who were destroyed in the wilderness, and those devoured by beasts, and those eaten by the fish of the sea, that they may return and rely on the day of the Chosen One; for none shall be destroyed before the Lord of Spirits, nor can any be destroyed.[169] 6 And all who dwell above in heaven received a command and power and one voice and one light like fire.[170] 7 And with their first words, they blessed, extolled, and praised with wisdom, and they were wise in speech and in the spirit of life. 8 And the Lord of Spirits placed the Chosen One on the throne of glory, and he shall judge all the works of the holy above in heaven, and in the balance their deeds shall be weighed. 9 And when he lifts up his countenance to judge their secret ways according to the word of the Lord of Spirits, and their path according to the way of the righteous judgment of the Lord of Spirits, then they all shall speak and bless with one voice, and glorify, extol, and sanctify the name of the Lord of Spirits.[171] 10 And He will summon all the hosts of the heavens, and all the holy ones above, and the host of God, the Cherubic, Seraphim, and Ophanim, and all the angels of power, and all the angels of principalities, and the Chosen One, and the other powers on the earth and over the water.[172] 11 On that day, they shall raise one voice, and bless and glorify and exalt in the spirit of faith, wisdom, patience, mercy, judgment, peace, and goodness, and shall all say with one voice: 'Blessed is He, and may the name of the Lord of Spirits be blessed forever and ever.' 12 All who do not sleep above in heaven shall bless Him: all the holy ones in heaven shall bless Him, and all the chosen who dwell in the garden of life: and every spirit of light who is able to bless, glorify, extol, and sanctify His blessed name, and all flesh shall immensely glorify and bless His name forever and ever. 13 For great is the mercy of the Lord of Spirits, and He is long-suffering, and all His works and all that He has created He has revealed to the righteous and chosen in the name of the Lord of Spirits.
The Lord commanded the kings, the mighty, the exalted, and those who dwell on the earth, saying: 'Open your eyes and raise your heads if you are able to recognize the Chosen One.'[173] 2 The Lord of Spirits seated him on the throne of His glory, and the spirit of righteousness was poured out upon him. The words from his mouth slay all sinners, and all the unrighteous are destroyed from his presence.[174] 3 On that day, all the kings, the mighty, the exalted, and those who hold the earth will stand, and they shall see and recognize how he sits on the throne of his glory, and how righteousness is judged before him, and no false word is spoken before him.[175] 4 Pain will come upon them as upon a woman in childbirth, when her child enters the birth canal, and she feels the agony of delivery.[176] 5 One group will look at another in terror, their faces will fall, and pain will seize them when they see the Son of Man sitting on the throne of his glory.[177] 6 The kings, the mighty, and all who possess the earth shall bless, glorify, and extol him who reigns over all, who was hidden. 7 From the beginning, the Son of Man was hidden, and the Most High preserved him in the presence of His power, and revealed him to the chosen. 8 The congregation of the chosen and holy shall be established, and all the chosen shall stand before him on that day.[178] 9 All the kings, the mighty, the exalted, and those who rule the earth will fall down before him on their faces, worship him, place their hopes in the Son of Man, and ask for mercy from him.[179] 10 Yet the Lord of Spirits will compel them to leave His presence quickly, their faces filled with shame, and darkness will deepen upon their faces. 11 He will deliver them to the angels for punishment, to exact vengeance on them for oppressing His children and His chosen. 12 They will be a spectacle for the righteous and for His chosen: they will rejoice over them, because the wrath of the Lord of Spirits rests upon them, and His sword is drunk with their blood. 13 The righteous and chosen will be saved on that day, and they will never again see the face of the sinners and unrighteous. 14 The Lord of Spirits will abide over them, and with the Son of Man, they will eat, lie down, and rise up forever and ever.[180] 15 The righteous and chosen will rise from the earth, and no longer wear downcast expressions. They will be clothed in garments of glory. 16 These are the garments of life from the Lord of Spirits: your garments will not wear out, nor will your glory fade in the presence of the Lord of Spirits.[181]
In those days, the mighty and the kings who rule the earth will beg Him for a brief respite from His angels of punishment, to whom they were delivered, so they might kneel and worship before the Lord of Spirits, and confess their sins before Him. 2 They will praise and exalt the Lord of Spirits, saying: 'Blessed is the Lord of Spirits and the Lord of kings, the Lord of the mighty and the Lord of the wealthy, the Lord of glory and the Lord of wisdom, 3 and magnificent in every hidden aspect is Your power from generation to generation, and Your glory forever and ever: Deep are all Your secrets and countless, and Your righteousness is beyond measure.'[182] 4 We now understand that we should praise and bless the Lord of kings and Him who is king over all kings.' 5 They will say: 'If only we had the chance to praise and give thanks and confess our faith before His glory! 6 And now we long for a moment of rest but do not find it: we strive to achieve it but fail; and light has vanished from before us, and darkness is our dwelling place forever and ever.[183] 7 For we did not believe before Him nor did we glorify the name of the Lord of Spirits, but our hope was in the scepter of our kingdom, and in our own glory. 8 And on the day of our suffering and tribulation, He does not save us, and we find no time to confess that our Lord is true in all His works, and in His judgments and His justice, and His judgments show no favoritism. 9 And we perish from before His face because of our deeds, and all our sins are accounted in righteousness.' 10 Now they shall say to themselves: 'Our souls are full of illegitimate gain, but it does not prevent us from descending into the depths of Sheol.'[184] 11 After that, their faces shall be filled with darkness and shame before that Son of Man, and they shall be expelled from His presence, and the sword shall remain before His face among them.[185] 12 The Lord of Spirits declares: 'This is the decree and judgment concerning the mighty and the kings and the exalted and those who possess the earth before the Lord of Spirits.'
I saw other forms hidden in that place. 2 I heard the voice of the angel explaining: 'These are the angels who descended to the earth and revealed secrets to humans, leading them into sin.'
In those days, Noah observed that the earth had sunk down and its destruction was near. 2 He arose from there and went to the ends of the earth, crying out to his grandfather Enoch: and Noah said three times in a distressed voice: 'Hear me, hear me, hear me.' 3 I asked him: 'What is happening on the earth that it is in such a bad state and shaking, lest I perish with it?' 4 At that moment, there was a great turmoil on the earth, a voice was heard from heaven, and I fell on my face. 5 My grandfather Enoch came and stood beside me, and asked me: 'Why have you cried out to me so bitterly and with tears?' 6 A decree has been issued from the Lord concerning those who dwell on the earth: their destruction is certain because they have learned all the secrets of the angels, the violence of the Satans, their most hidden powers, and all the power of those who practice sorcery and witchcraft, and those who make molten images across the earth. 7 He explained how silver is extracted from the dust of the earth, and how soft metal originates from within the earth. 8 'For lead and tin are not produced from the earth like silver: they come from a source that produces them, and an angel presides over it, and that angel is pre-eminent.' 9 Afterwards, my grandfather Enoch took me by the hand, raised me up, and said to me: 'Go, for I have inquired of the Lord of Spirits about this upheaval on the earth.'[186] 10 He told me: 'Because of their wickedness, their judgment has been determined and shall not be withheld by Me forever. Because of the sorceries they have discovered and mastered, the earth and those who dwell upon it shall be destroyed.' 11 'These individuals have no chance for repentance forever, because they have revealed what was hidden, and they are doomed. But as for you, my son, the Lord of Spirits knows you are pure and blameless concerning these secrets.' 12 'He has ordained your name to be among the holy, and will keep you among those who dwell on the earth, and has destined your righteous descendants for kingship and great honors, and from your seed shall emerge a fountain of the righteous and holy without number forever.'
After that, he showed me the angels of punishment who are prepared to unleash all the powers of the waters beneath the earth to bring judgment and destruction upon all who dwell on the earth. 2 The Lord of Spirits commanded the angels who were about to go forth not to let the waters rise but to hold them back, as these angels had authority over the powers of the waters.[187] 3 Then I left the presence of Enoch.
In those days, the word of God came to me, saying: 'Noah, you have found favor in My sight, a life without blame, filled with love and integrity. 2 Now the angels are constructing a wooden structure, and when they complete it, I will bless it, ensuring that it carries the seed of life, leading to a transformation so that the earth will always have inhabitants. 3 I will establish your descendants before me forever, and I will expand the population of those who live with you: the earth will be fruitful and blessed, multiplying in the name of the Lord.' 4 He will confine those angels who acted unrighteously in a burning valley which my grandfather Enoch previously showed me in the west, among the mountains of gold, silver, iron, soft metal, and tin. 5 I saw that valley where there was a great upheaval and stirring of the waters. 6 During this turmoil, from that fiery molten metal and the upheaval there, a smell of sulfur emerged, mixing with those waters, and that valley where the angels who misled humanity burned beneath the land. 7 And through its valleys flow streams of fire, where these angels are punished who misled those living on the earth. 8 These waters, in those days, will serve kings, the mighty, and the exalted, and those who live on the earth, for healing the body but punishing the spirit; now their spirit is consumed with desire, and they will be punished in their bodies because they have denied the Lord of Spirits and see their punishment daily, yet do not believe in His name. 9 As their bodies burn more intensely, a corresponding transformation will occur in their spirits forever; for no one shall speak frivolously before the Lord of Spirits. 10 The judgement upon them comes because they indulge the desires of their body and deny the Spirit of the Lord. 11 These waters will change in those days; when those angels are punished in these waters, the springs will shift in temperature, and when the angels rise, the water of the springs will turn cold.[188] 12 I heard Michael say: 'This judgement on the angels serves as a testament to the kings and the mighty who possess the earth.' 13 These waters of judgement contribute to the healing of the kings' bodies and the indulgence of their bodily desires; thus, they will not recognize nor believe that these waters will transform into an eternal fire.'
After that, my grandfather Enoch shared with me all the secrets from the book of Parables that had been given to him, compiling them into the words of the book of Parables for me. 2 On that day, Michael said to Raphael, 'The power of the spirit overwhelms me and makes me tremble because of the severity of the judgment of the secrets, the judgment of the angels: who can withstand the harsh judgment that has been meted out, which causes them to dissolve?' 3 Michael spoke again, saying to Raphael, 'Who can remain unaffected by this judgment, whose heart is not softened and whose resolve is not shaken by this decree that has been issued against them because of their misleading ways?' 4 As he stood before the Lord of Spirits, Michael said to Raphael, 'I will not support them in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord of Spirits is displeased with them because they act as though they were the Lord. Therefore, all that is hidden shall befall them for eternity; for neither angel nor man shall share in their fate, but they alone will bear their judgment forever and ever.'
After this judgment, they will be terrified and shaken because they revealed these things to those who live on earth. 2 Look at the names of these angels: the first is Samjâzâ, the second Artâqîfâ, the third Armên, the fourth Kôkabêl, the fifth Tûrâêl, the sixth Rûmjâl, the seventh Dânjâl, the eighth Nêqâêl, the ninth Barâqêl, the tenth Azâzêl, the eleventh Armârôs, the twelfth Batarjâl, the thirteenth Busasêjal, the fourteenth Hanânêl, the fifteenth Tûrêl, the sixteenth Sêmâpêsêêl, the seventeenth Jetrêl, the eighteenth Tûmêâl, the nineteenth Tûrêl, the twentieth Rumâêl, and the twenty-first Azâzêl. 3 These are the chiefs of their angels and their names, and they command hundreds, fifties, and tens. 4 The first angel, Jeqôn, led all the sons of God astray and brought them down to the earth, misleading them with the daughters of men. 5 The second, Asbeêl, gave evil counsel to the holy sons of God, leading them to defile themselves with the daughters of men. 6 The third, Gâdreêl, showed the children of men all the deadly strikes, led Eve astray, and introduced the weapons of death to the sons of men, including the shield, coat of mail, sword, and other weapons.[189] 7 From his hand, these have been used against those who live on the earth from that day and forevermore. 8 The fourth, Pênêmêe, taught the children of men the difference between bitter and sweet, revealing all the secrets of their wisdom. 9 He taught mankind how to write with ink and paper, which led many to sin from then until today. 10 For men were not created to affirm their promises with pen and ink. 11 For humans were not created to be different from the angels, so that they should remain pure and righteous, and death, which corrupts everything, would not have affected them. But through this knowledge, they perish, and this power consumes us.[190] 12 The fifth, Kâsdêjâ, revealed to the children of men all the evil afflictions of spirits and demons, the smiting of embryos in the womb to cause miscarriage, and the bites of the serpent, and the afflictions that occur at noon, the son of the serpent named Tabâêt. 13 This was the task of Kâsbeêl, the chief of the oath, which he showed to the holy ones when he lived high above in glory. Its name is Bêqâ. 14 This angel requested Michael to reveal the hidden name so that he could declare it in the oath, causing those who revealed secrets to the children of men to tremble before it. 15 This is the power of this oath; it is mighty and strong, and was placed in the hand of Michael. 16 And these secrets are powerful through his oath: the heavens were suspended before the world was created and will be forever.[191] 17 By this oath, the earth was founded upon water, and from the hidden recesses of the mountains come beautiful waters, from the creation of the world and unto eternity. 18 By this oath, the sea was created, and as its foundation, He set the sand to hold back its fury from the creation of the world unto eternity. 19 By this oath, the depths are made fast, remaining calm and undisturbed from eternity to eternity. 20 By this oath, the sun and moon complete their courses and do not deviate from their ordained paths from eternity to eternity. 21 By this oath, the stars complete their courses, and He calls them by their names, and they answer Him from eternity to eternity. 22 The same applies to the spirits of water and winds, and all the breezes in every direction. 23 The voices of thunder and the light from the lightnings are preserved, along with the storerooms of hail, frost, mist, rain, and dew.[192] 24 All these acknowledge and give thanks before the Lord of Spirits, glorifying Him with all their power; their sustenance comes from their acts of thanksgiving, as they praise, glorify, and exalt the name of the Lord of Spirits forever and ever. 25 And this oath prevails over them, keeping their paths secure, ensuring their actions are not destroyed. This concludes the Third Parable. 26 There was great joy among them, and they blessed, glorified, and extolled the name of the Son of Man that had been revealed to them. 27 He sat on the throne of his glory, the entirety of judgment was given to the Son of Man, and he caused the sinners to vanish from the face of the earth, along with those who misled the world.[193] 28 They will be bound in chains, confined to their place of destruction, and all their works will disappear from the face of the earth. 29 From now on, nothing corruptible will exist; the Son of Man has appeared, has taken his seat on the throne of his glory, and all evil will vanish before his face. His word will go forth and be strong before the Lord of Spirits. This is the Third Parable of Enoch.
After that, his name was exalted to the Son of Man and to the Lord of Spirits among those who live on the earth during his lifetime. 2 He was lifted up on the chariots of the spirit, and his name disappeared among them. 3 From that day, I was no longer counted among them; he placed me between the North and the West winds, where the angels measured a place for the chosen and the righteous. 4 There, I saw the earliest ancestors and the righteous who have lived in that place since the beginning.
After that, my spirit was taken up, and I ascended into the heavens. I saw the holy sons of God walking on flames of fire: Their garments were white, and their faces shone like snow. 2 I saw two streams of fire, and the light from the fire was like hyacinth. Overwhelmed, I fell on my face before the Lord of Spirits.[194] 3 The archangel Michael took me by my right hand, lifted me up, and led me through all the secrets, showing me all the secrets of righteousness. 4 He revealed to me all the secrets of the ends of heaven, and all the chambers of the stars and luminaries, from where they emerge before the holy ones. 5 My spirit was taken into the highest heaven where I saw a structure built of crystals with tongues of living fire between them.[195] 6 I observed the girdle of fire encircling this fiery house, with streams of living fire on all four sides. 7 Around it were Seraphim, Cherubim, and Ophanim, who do not sleep and guard the throne of His glory. 8 There, I saw countless angels, thousands of thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand, surrounding the house. Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, Phanuel, and the holy angels from above the heavens entered and left the house.[196] 9 They emerged from that house, and along with Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Phanuel, came many holy angels beyond number. 10 With them was the Head of Days, whose head was white and pure as wool, and His garments were beyond description.[197] 11 Overcome, I fell on my face, my body completely relaxed, and my spirit transformed; I cried out powerfully, blessing, glorifying, and exalting Him. 12 These blessings from my mouth pleased the Head of Days.[198] 13 The Head of Days appeared with Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Phanuel, accompanied by thousands and tens of thousands of angels without number. 14 One of the angels approached me and said, 'This is the Son of Man who was born unto righteousness. Righteousness dwells with him, and the righteousness of the Head of Days never leaves him.' 15 He told me, 'He proclaims peace to you in the name of the world to come. Since the world's creation, peace has emanated from here, and so it will be for you forever.' 16 'All will follow his path because righteousness never leaves him. They will dwell with him, and their inheritance will be with him, never to be separated from him forever.' 17 'Thus, the Son of Man will have long days, and the righteous will have peace and walk in upright ways in the name of the Lord of Spirits forever.'[199]
This book describes the courses of the heavenly bodies, detailing each according to their classes, control, seasons, names, origins, and months as shown to me by Uriel, the holy angel guiding me. He explained precisely all their laws and the eternal progression until a new creation is established forever.[200] 2 The first rule of the luminaries: the Sun rises from the eastern portals of the heavens and sets in the western portals.[201] 3 I observed six portals for the sun's rising and setting, and for the moon's rising and setting. The leaders of the stars and their groups also follow this path: six portals in the east and six in the west, all precisely aligned, with numerous windows on either side.[202] 4 The great luminary, the Sun, follows first. His circuit is as vast as the circumference of the heavens, and he is completely filled with illuminating and heating fire. 5 The chariot that carries the Sun is driven by the wind. The Sun descends from the heavens and circles through the north to reach the east, guided to enter the proper portal and shine across the heavens.[203] 6 Specifically, he rises from the fourth portal, one of the six eastern portals, in the first month. 7 From this fourth portal during the first month, twelve windows open to release flames when it is their season. 8 The Sun rises through this fourth portal for thirty consecutive mornings and sets precisely in the fourth portal in the western sky. 9 Over this period, the day progressively lengthens, and the night correspondingly shortens, until the thirtieth morning. 10 On that day, daylight lasts a ninth part longer than the night. The day measures exactly ten parts, and the night measures eight parts. 11 The Sun then moves from the fourth portal, rises from the fifth eastern portal for thirty mornings, and sets in the fifth western portal. 12 The day then extends by two parts, totaling eleven parts, while the night shortens to seven parts. 13 The Sun continues to the sixth eastern portal, where it rises and sets for thirty-one mornings due to its astronomical position. 14 On this particular day, daylight doubles the duration of the night, totaling twelve parts for the day and six for the night. 15 The Sun then ascends to shorten the day and lengthen the night, returning through the sixth portal and rising from it for thirty mornings. 16 After these thirty mornings, daylight decreases by one part, totaling eleven parts, and the night lasts seven parts. 17 The Sun then sets in the sixth western portal and returns to rise from the fifth eastern portal for thirty mornings, setting again in the fifth western portal. 18 On that day, daylight reduces by two parts, resulting in ten parts of day and eight parts of night. 19 It then moves to rise from the fourth portal for thirty-one mornings due to its sign, setting in the western counterpart. 20 The day and night balance equally on this day, each spanning nine parts. 21 Subsequently, the Sun rises from the third eastern portal and sets in the third western portal for thirty mornings. 22 During this phase, the night becomes longer than the day: night extends to ten parts while the day shortens to eight parts. 23 The Sun then rises from the second eastern portal for thirty mornings and sets in the second western portal. 24 On that day, night lengthens to eleven parts, and day shortens to seven parts. 25 The Sun continues to rise from the second portal and sets in the western second portal, then returns to rise from the first eastern portal for thirty-one mornings, setting in the first western portal. 26 Consequently, the night extends to twice the length of the day: twelve parts for the night and six for the day. 27 The Sun follows its orbital divisions, returning through these divisions, entering the first portal for thirty mornings and setting in its western opposite. 28 The night then shortens by a ninth part, totaling eleven parts of night and seven parts of day. 29 The Sun returns to the second eastern portal, traversing its orbit for thirty mornings, rising and setting. 30 The night then shortens to ten parts and the day extends to eight parts. 31 The Sun rises from the third eastern portal and sets in the western sky for thirty-one mornings. 32 On that day, both day and night equalize at nine parts each, rounding the year to exactly 364 days. 33 The variation in day and night lengths arises through the Sun's journey. 34 As a result, the Sun's path gradually extends the day and shortens the night. 35 This is the law and path of the Sun, and upon completing its cycle sixty times, it continues, named the great luminary, forever. 36 This rising great luminary is named according to its appearance, as commanded by the Lord, maintaining constant brightness and equal size with the Moon. 37 As it rises and sets, it diminishes not; it runs both day and night. Its light is sevenfold brighter than the moon, yet they appear the same size.[204]
After this, I observed another law related to the smaller luminary, the Moon. 2 Her circumference matches that of the heavens, and her chariot, driven by the wind, receives light in a defined measure. 3 Her rise and set change each month, and her days mirror those of the sun. When fully illuminated, her light reaches one-seventh the brightness of the sun. 4 She rises this way, first appearing in the east on the thirtieth morning, becoming visible alongside the sun at the portal where the sun rises, marking the first phase of the moon on the thirtieth day. 5 Half of her surface shines by one-seventh, while the rest of her remains dark, except for one-seventh of her light, which makes up one-fourteenth of her total brightness. 6 When she receives one-seventh of the half of her light, her overall brightness equates to one-seventh plus half of that seventh. 7 She sets with the sun, and when the sun rises, the moon also rises, gaining half a part of light. At the beginning of her day, she sets with the sun and remains unseen that night, missing fourteen parts and half of one part. 8 She rises on that day with exactly one-seventh of her full brightness, pulling back from the sun’s rise, and over the remaining days, she brightens across the remaining thirteen parts.
I observed another pattern and law for the moon and how she completes her monthly cycle. 2 Uriel, the holy angel who leads them all, showed me this. He revealed their positions and I recorded these positions as he showed them to me, as well as the phases of their lights over the course of fifteen days. 3 The moon completes her illumination in the east in seven parts, and her waning in the west also in seven parts. 4 In certain months, she changes her settings, and in other months, she follows a unique path. 5 Specifically, in two months, the moon sets with the sun, corresponding to the middle portals, the third and the fourth. 6 Over the course of years, the calculation becomes more complex. For example, in 8 years, there are a total of 2912 days. 7 The moon circles for seven days and then turns around and returns through the same portal where the sun rises, completing all her illumination before receding from the sun. After eight days, she enters the sixth portal, where the sun emerges. 8 Each year accumulates additional days to the lunar cycle. 9 When the sun moves through the fourth portal, the moon also takes seven days to complete her phase before moving through the fifth. She then returns in seven days back to the fourth portal and completes her illumination. 10 She then retreats and enters the first portal in eight days, and resumes her cycle. 11 The moon returns again to the fourth portal in seven days, from which the sun emerges. 12 This pattern showed how the moon rose and the sun set during that period. 13 When five years are combined, the sun accumulates an excess of thirty days. For each five-year cycle, the total days are 364. 14 The sun and stars manage to synchronize over time, not advancing or delaying their position by even a day, but they complete the year perfectly just in 364 days. 15 In three years, there are 1092 days calculated for the sun. 16 For the moon alone, over three years, the total is 1062 days, falling 50 days behind over five years. 17 In five years, there are 1770 days total for the moon, so in eight years, the moon totals 2832 days. 18 Over eight years, the moon falls behind by a total of 80 days. 19 All the days the moon falls behind in eight years accumulate to 80 days. 20 The year completes accurately according to the world-stations and the positions of the sun, which ascends and descends through the portals every 30 days. 21 The moon falls behind the sun and the stars by 30 days.
The leaders of the thousands, who oversee the entire creation and all the stars, are also responsible for the four intercalary days, inseparably linked with their duties according to the annual calendar. These days serve during the four days that are not included in the annual count. 2 Due to these luminaries, people often miscalculate, for these luminaries indeed serve at specific world-stations: one in the first portal, one in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the sixth portal of heaven, ensuring the year's precision through its distinct 364 stations. 3 Uriel, the angel appointed by the Lord of glory to oversee all the celestial bodies in heaven and on earth, showed me the signs, times, years, and days. These celestial bodies govern the sky and are visible on Earth, leading day and night—the sun, moon, stars, and all entities that make their circuits in the celestial chariots.[205] 4 Uriel also showed me twelve gates located around the sun’s chariot in heaven, through which the sun's rays emerge, bringing warmth to the earth when they open at their designated times. 5 The gates also affect the winds and the spirit of the dew, which are open in the heavens at the extremities. 6 There are twelve portals in the sky at the earth’s extremities, through which the sun, moon, and stars, and all heavenly operations emerge, moving from east to west. 7 Many windows are situated to the left and right of these portals, and one window, when opened during its season, produces warmth, corresponding to those gates from which the stars emerge as commanded, and where they set according to their number. 8 I saw chariots in heaven, moving above these portals where the stars that never set revolve. 9 One chariot is larger than all the others, and it traverses the entire world.
At the ends of the earth, I observed twelve portals open to all quarters of the heaven, through which winds blow across the earth.[206] 2 Three of these portals face east, three face west, three face south, and three face north. 3 The first set faces east, another set faces north, the next set faces south, and the last set faces west. 4 From four of these portals come winds that bring blessing and prosperity, while the other eight portals release harmful winds that, when sent forth, bring destruction to the earth, the waters, all who dwell upon them, and everything within these realms. 5 The first wind, known as the east wind, emerges from the first eastern portal, leaning towards the south and brings desolation, drought, heat, and destruction. 6 From the second, central portal comes what is needed, bringing rain, fertility, prosperity, and dew; while from the third portal, which is towards the north, come cold and drought. 7 From the south, winds emerge through three portals: a hot wind comes from the first portal leaning towards the east. 8 From the central portal next to it, come pleasant scents along with dew, rain, prosperity, and health. 9 From the third portal facing west come dew, rain, locusts, and desolation. 10 From the north, winds emerge as follows: from the seventh portal on the east come dew, rain, locusts, and desolation. 11 From the central portal, direct winds bring health, rain, dew, and prosperity; and from the third portal facing west come clouds, frost, snow, rain, dew, and locusts. 12 The west winds emerge from the following portals: from the first portal near the north come dew, frost, cold, snow, and frost. From the central portal come dew, rain, prosperity, and blessings; and from the last portal near the south come drought, desolation, burning, and destruction. 13 With these twelve portals located in the four quarters of the heaven, their laws, plagues, and blessings are completed. I have shown all of these to you, my son Methuselah.
The first quarter is called the east because it is the first; the second is called the south, notable as the place where the Most High will descend, indeed, a special place where the eternally blessed will descend. 2 The west quarter is known as the diminished because all the heavenly bodies wane and set there. 3 The fourth quarter, called the north, is divided into three parts: the first is for human habitation; the second contains seas, abysses, forests, rivers, darkness, and clouds; the third part holds the garden of righteousness. 4 I observed seven high mountains, higher than any others on earth, from which hoar-frost emerges and where days, seasons, and years pass. 5 I saw seven rivers on the earth, larger than all others. One of these, originating from the west, flows into the Great Sea. 6 Two of these rivers come from the north and empty their waters into the Erythraean Sea in the east. 7 The remaining four originate from the north and flow into their respective seas; two into the Erythraean Sea and two into the Great Sea, with some ending in the desert. 8 I saw seven great islands, two on the mainland and five in the Great Sea.[207]
The sun has two names: the first is Orjâreas, and the second is Tômâs. 2 The moon has four names: the first is Asônjâ, the second Eblâ, the third Benâsê, and the fourth Erâe. 3 These are the two great luminaries, whose circumference is similar to that of the heaven, and the size of both is alike. 4 The sun contains seven portions of light which exceed those of the moon, distributed in definite measures until the seventh portion of the sun's light is depleted. 5 Both luminaries set and enter the portals of the west, orbit via the north, and emerge through the eastern portals facing the heavens. 6 When the moon rises, one-fourteenth of it becomes visible in the sky. By the fourteenth day, the moon reaches full illumination. 7 The moon receives fifteen parts of light by the fifteenth day, completing its full phase according to the annual cycle, growing incrementally by fourteen parts until fully illuminated. 8 As the moon wanes, its light decreases: fourteen parts on the first day, thirteen on the second, continuing to diminish each day by one part until, by the fourteenth day, only a half part remains, and by the fifteenth, all light disappears completely. 9 Some months have twenty-nine days and occasionally twenty-eight. 10 Uriel explained another law regarding how the moon receives light from the sun and on which side the light is transferred. 11 Throughout the fourteen days when the moon is waxing, it gathers light when positioned opposite the sun, achieving full brightness in the heavens. 12 The moon is termed the new moon on the first day, as it begins to capture light. 13 It becomes fully illuminated exactly when the sun sets in the west, rising from the east at night. The moon then shines all night until the sun rises opposite her in the morning. 14 The side from which the moon's light originates is also where it begins to wane until the light completely disappears, concluding the monthly cycle with her circumference empty and devoid of light. 15 The moon has three months consisting of thirty days each, and during her cycle, she also has three months of twenty-nine days each, during which she undergoes waning in the first period of time, lasting one hundred and seventy-seven days through the first portal. 16 During her emergence, she is visible for three months of thirty days each, and for three months of twenty-nine days each. 17 At night, she appears like a man for twenty days at a time, and by day she resembles the sky, containing nothing but her own light.
Now, my son, I have shown you everything, and the law governing all the stars of heaven is complete. 2 Uriel showed me all the laws of these stars for each day, for every ruling season, for every year, and for their appearances, including the specific order for each month and every week. 3 He explained the waning of the moon that occurs in the sixth portal: here, the moon's illumination is completed, and then the waning begins. 4 This waning continues in the first portal during its season, lasting until one hundred and seventy-seven days are completed, which corresponds to twenty-five weeks and two days. 5 The moon falls behind the sun and the stars by exactly five days over one cycle, once it passes through the position you see. 6 This is the picture and sketch of every luminary that Uriel the archangel, their leader, showed to me.
In those days, the angel Uriel said to me, 'Behold, Enoch, I have shown you everything, and I have revealed to you that you should see this sun, this moon, and the leaders of the stars of heaven and all those who guide their paths, their duties, timings, and departures. 2 In the days of the sinners, the years will be shortened, and their seed will be delayed on their lands and fields. All things on the earth will change and will not appear at their proper times; the rain will be withheld, and the heavens will keep it back.[208] 3 During these times, the fruits of the earth will be late, and will not grow at their proper times, and the fruits of the trees will be delayed in their time. 4 The moon will change her course and not appear at her scheduled times. 5 In those days, the sun will be seen, and it will travel in the evening on the extremity of the great chariot in the west and will shine more brightly than is typical for the order of light. 6 Many leaders of the stars will deviate from their established order. They will change their orbits and duties and not appear at their designated seasons.[209] 7 The entire order of the stars will be hidden from the sinners, and the thoughts of those on the earth will be mistaken about them, leading them to go astray and even regard them as gods. 8 Evil will be multiplied upon them, and punishment will come upon them to destroy all.'
He said to me, 'Look closely, Enoch, at these heavenly tablets, read what is written on them, and pay attention to every detail.'[210] 2 I examined the heavenly tablets, read everything written on them, understood it all, and read the book detailing all the actions of humankind and of all flesh that will exist on the earth for generations to come. 3 Immediately, I praised the great Lord, the King of glory, forever, for creating all the works of the world. I praised the Lord for His patience and blessed Him because of humanity. 4 Afterward, I declared, 'Blessed is the person who dies in righteousness and goodness, who has no record of unrighteousness written about them, and against whom no day of judgment will be held.' 5 The seven holy ones then took me and placed me on the earth before my home's door and said, 'Tell everything to your son Methuselah, and inform all your children that no one is righteous in the sight of the Lord, for He is their Creator. 6 'You will have one more year to live with your son, during which you must give your final instructions, teach your children, write it down for them, and bear witness to all your children; and in the second year, you will be taken from among them.' 7 'Let your heart be strong, for the righteous will share truths with the righteous; they will rejoice together, and congratulate one another.' 8 'But the sinners will perish with other sinners, and those who turn away will fall with other apostates.' 9 'And those who practice righteousness will perish because of the actions of humans and will be taken away because of the behavior of the godless.'[211] 10 After they stopped speaking to me, I returned to my people, blessing the Lord of the world.
And now, my son Methuselah, I am recounting and writing down all these things for you, and I have revealed everything to you, and given you books about all these: so keep, my son Methuselah, the books from your father’s hand, and make sure that you pass them on to future generations. 2 I have given you and your children Wisdom, so that you and they can pass it on to their children through the generations, this Wisdom that surpasses their understanding. 3 And those who comprehend it will not rest, but will listen attentively to learn this Wisdom, and it will please them more than the finest food. 4 Blessed are all the righteous, blessed are all those who walk in the path of righteousness and do not sin like the sinners, throughout all their days while the sun travels the sky, entering and exiting the portals for thirty days with the leaders of thousands of stars, along with the four that are added which divide the four seasons of the year, which guide them and join them for four days. 5 Because of them, people will err and not include them in the full count of the year: indeed, people will err, and not accurately recognize them. 6 For they are part of the yearly count and are accurately recorded there forever, one in the first portal, one in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the sixth, and the year is completed in three hundred and sixty-four days. 7 And the accounting of this is precise, and the recorded count is exact; for the lights, months, festivals, years, and days, Uriel has shown and revealed to me, to whom the Lord of all creation has assigned the host of heaven.[212] 8 And he has authority over night and day in the sky to make the light illuminate men—sun, moon, and stars, and all the powers of the heavens that move in their orbits. 9 And these are the orders of the stars, which stay in their places, and in their times and festivals and months. 10 And these are the names of those who lead them, who ensure they arrive at their appropriate times, in their orders, in their seasons, in their months, in their periods of rule, and in their positions. 11 Their four leaders who divide the year into four parts go first; and after them, the twelve leaders of the orders who divide the months; and for the three hundred and sixty days, there are leaders over thousands who divide the days; and for the four extra days, there are leaders who split the four parts of the year. 12 And these leaders over thousands are added between leader and leader, each behind their station, but their leaders make the division. And these are the names of the leaders who divide the four parts of the year which are ordained: Melkejal, Hellemmealak, and Mal'ajal, and Narel. 13 And the names of those who lead them: Adnarel, and Ejasa'al, and Elomeal—these three follow the leaders of the orders, and there is one that follows the three leaders of the orders which follow those leaders of stations that divide the four parts of the year. 14 At the beginning of the year Melkejal rises first and rules, who is named Tamain and sun, and all the days of his rule are ninety-one days. 15 And these are the signs of the days that are to be observed on earth during his rule: sweat, and heat, and calm; and all the trees bear fruit, and leaves appear on all the trees, and the wheat is harvested, and the roses bloom, and all the flowers that emerge in the field, but the trees of the winter season wither. 16 And these are the names of the leaders who are under them: Berkajal, Zalebsal, and another who is added, a leader of a thousand, called Hielbjasheph: and the days of the rule of this leader are at an end. 17 The next leader after him is Heal'emmealak, whom one calls the shining sun, and all the days of his light are ninety-one days. 18 And these are the signs of his days on earth: intense heat and dryness, and the trees ripen their fruits and produce all their fruits ripe and ready, and the sheep mate and become pregnant, and all the fruits of the earth are harvested, and everything that is in the fields, and the winepress: these things occur during the days of his rule. 19 These are the names, and the orders, and the leaders of those heads of thousands: Giedaieeal, Keal, and Heal, and the name of the head of a thousand which is added to them, Asfaeal: and the days of his rule are at an end.
And now, my son Methuselah, I will show you all my visions which I have seen, recounting them for you. 2 I saw two visions before I got married, and each one was completely different from the other: the first was when I was learning to write; the second before I married your mother, when I saw a terrifying vision. I prayed to the Lord about them. 3 I was resting in the house of my grandfather Mahalalel when I saw in a vision that the sky collapsed, was torn away, and fell to the earth. 4 When it fell to the earth, I saw how the earth was swallowed by a great abyss, mountains were stacked upon mountains, hills fell onto hills, and tall trees were ripped from their trunks and thrown down, sinking into the abyss. 5 Then a word came to my lips, and I began to shout, saying: 'The earth is destroyed.' 6 My grandfather Mahalalel woke me as I lay beside him and asked me: 'Why are you crying so loudly, my son, and why are you lamenting?' 7 I told him the entire vision I had seen, and he said to me: 'You have seen a terrifying thing, my son, and your dream-vision reveals serious matters regarding the sins of the world: it must sink into the abyss and be utterly destroyed.' 8 And now, my son, get up and pray to the Lord of glory, for you are a believer, that a remnant may remain on the earth, and that He may not destroy the entire earth. 9 My son, all of this will come upon the earth from heaven, and there will be great destruction on earth. 10 After this, I stood up, prayed, pleaded, begged, and wrote down my prayer for the generations of the world, and I will show everything to you, my son Methuselah. 11 And when I went out below and saw the sky, and the sun rising in the east, and the moon setting in the west, and a few stars, and the whole earth, and everything as He had known it from the beginning, then I praised the Lord of judgment and extolled Him because He made the sun emerge from the windows of the east, and it ascended and rose over the face of the sky, and set out and kept traversing the path shown to it.
And I raised my hands in righteousness and blessed the Holy and Great One, and spoke with the breath of my mouth and with the tongue of flesh, which God has created for the children of men, that they should speak with it, and He gave them breath and a tongue and a mouth to speak with:[213] 2 'Blessed are You, O Lord, King, Great and mighty in Your greatness, Lord of the entire creation of heaven, King of kings, and God of the entire world. And Your power and kingship and greatness endure forever and ever, And through all generations Your dominion; And all the heavens are Your throne forever, And the whole earth Your footstool forever and ever.[214] 3 For You have created and You rule all things, And nothing is too difficult for You, Wisdom does not depart from the place of Your throne, Nor turns away from Your presence. And You know and see and hear everything, And there is nothing hidden from You, for You see everything. 4 And now the angels of Your heavens are guilty of trespass, And upon the flesh of men rests Your wrath until the great day of judgment. 5 And now, O God and Lord and Great King, I implore and beseech You to answer my prayer, To leave me a lineage on earth, And not destroy all the flesh of man, And make the earth uninhabited, So there would be an eternal desolation. 6 And now, my Lord, remove from the earth the flesh that has aroused Your wrath, but let the flesh of righteousness and integrity be established as a plant of the eternal seed, And do not hide Your face from the prayer of Your servant, O Lord.'
And after this I saw another dream, and I will reveal the entire dream to you, my son. 2 And Enoch raised his voice and spoke to his son Methuselah: 'To you, my son, I will speak: listen to my words--pay attention to the dream-vision of your father. 3 Before I married your mother Edna, I saw in a vision on my bed, and behold a bull emerged from the earth, and this bull was white; and after it came a heifer, and along with this heifer came forth two bulls, one of them black and the other red.[215] 4 And the black bull attacked the red one and chased him across the earth, and then I could no longer see the red bull. 5 But the black bull grew and the heifer accompanied him, and I saw that many oxen emerged from him which looked like and followed him. 6 And the cow, the first one, left the presence of the first bull to search for the red one, but could not find him, and mourned with a great lamentation over him and searched for him. 7 And I watched until the first bull returned to her and calmed her, and from that time onward she cried no more. 8 And afterward she bore another white bull, and following him she bore many bulls and black cows. 9 And in my sleep, I saw that white bull also grow and become a great white bull, and from him emerged many white bulls, and they resembled him. And they began to produce many white bulls, which resembled them, one following another, many.
And again I observed with my eyes as I slept, and I saw the heavens above, and behold a star fell from heaven, and it rose and ate and grazed among those oxen.[216] 2 And after that I saw the large and the black oxen, and behold they all changed their stalls and pastures and their herds, and began to live together. 3 And again I saw in the vision, and looked toward the heavens, and behold I saw many stars descend and cast themselves down from heaven to that first star, and they transformed into bulls among those cattle and grazed with them.[217] 4 And I observed them and saw, and behold they all exposed their privy members, like horses, and began to mate with the cows of the oxen, and they all became pregnant and bore elephants, camels, and donkeys. 5 And all the oxen feared them and were terrified by them, and began to bite with their teeth and to devour, and to gore with their horns. 6 And they also began to devour those oxen; and behold all the people of the earth began to tremble and quake before them and to flee from them.
And again I saw how they began to attack each other and to devour each other, and the earth began to cry out loudly. 2 And I looked again to heaven, and I saw in the vision, and behold, there emerged from heaven beings who looked like white men: and four left that place and three with them. 3 And those three who had last come forth took me by the hand and lifted me up, away from the generations of the earth, and raised me to a high place, and showed me a tower raised high above the earth, and all the hills were lower. 4 And one said to me: 'Remain here until you see everything that happens to those elephants, camels, and donkeys, and the stars and the oxen, and all of them.'
And I saw one of those four who had come forth first, and he seized that first star which had fallen from heaven, and bound it hand and foot, and threw it into an abyss: now that abyss was narrow, deep, horrible, and dark. 2 And one of them drew a sword and gave it to those elephants, camels, and donkeys; then they began to strike each other, and the whole earth shook because of them. 3 And while I was watching in the vision, look, one of those four who had come forth threw stones from heaven, and gathered and took all the great stars whose private parts were like those of horses, and bound them all hand and foot, and threw them into an abyss of the earth.
And one of those four went to that white bull and instructed him in a secret, without him being terrified: he was born a bull and became a man, and built for himself a large vessel and lived there; and three bulls lived with him in that vessel, and they were covered in. 2 And again I raised my eyes towards heaven and saw a lofty roof, with seven water torrents on it, and those torrents flowed with much water into an enclosure. 3 And I saw again, and behold, fountains opened on the surface of that large enclosure, and the water began to swell and rise upon the surface, and I watched that enclosure until all its surface was covered with water. 4 And the water, the darkness, and mist increased upon it; and as I looked at the height of that water, the water had risen above the height of that enclosure, and was streaming over that enclosure, and it stood upon the earth. 5 And all the cattle of that enclosure were gathered together until I saw how they sank and were swallowed up and perished in that water. 6 But that vessel floated on the water, while all the oxen and elephants and camels and donkeys sank to the bottom with all the other animals, so that I could no longer see them, and they were not able to escape, but perished and sank into the depths. 7 And again I saw in the vision until those water torrents were removed from that high roof, and the chasms of the earth were leveled up and other abysses were opened. 8 Then the water began to run down into these, until the earth became visible; but that vessel settled on the earth, and the darkness retreated and light appeared. 9 But that white bull which had become a man came out of that vessel, and the three bulls with him, and one of those three was white like that bull, and one of them was red as blood, and one black; and that white bull departed from them. 10 And they began to bring forth beasts of the field and birds, so that there arose different species: lions, tigers, wolves, dogs, hyenas, wild boars, foxes, squirrels, swine, falcons, vultures, kites, eagles, and ravens; and among them was born a white bull. 11 And they began to bite one another; but that white bull which was born among them begat a wild ass and a white bull with it, and the wild asses multiplied. 12 But that bull which was born from him begat a black wild boar and a white sheep; and the former begat many boars, but that sheep begat twelve sheep. 13 And when those twelve sheep had grown, they gave up one of them to the asses, and those asses again gave up that sheep to the wolves, and that sheep grew up among the wolves. 14 And the Lord brought the eleven sheep to live with it and to graze with it among the wolves; and they multiplied and became many flocks of sheep. 15 And the wolves began to fear them, and they oppressed them until they destroyed their little ones, and they cast their young into a river of much water; but those sheep began to cry aloud because of their little ones, and to complain unto their Lord. 16 And a sheep which had been saved from the wolves fled and escaped to the wild asses; and I saw the sheep how they lamented and cried, and besought their Lord with all their might, until that Lord of the sheep descended at the voice of the sheep from a lofty abode, and came to them and grazed them. 17 And He called that sheep which had escaped the wolves, and spoke with it concerning the wolves that it should admonish them not to touch the sheep. 18 And the sheep went to the wolves according to the word of the Lord, and another sheep met it and went with it, and the two went and entered together into the assembly of those wolves, and spoke with them and admonished them not to touch the sheep from henceforth. 19 And thereupon I saw the wolves, and how they oppressed the sheep exceedingly with all their power; and the sheep cried aloud. 20 And the Lord came to the sheep and they began to strike those wolves; and the wolves began to lament, but the sheep became quiet and forthwith ceased to cry out. 21 And I saw the sheep till they departed from among the wolves; but the eyes of the wolves were blinded, and those wolves departed in pursuit of the sheep with all their power. 22 And the Lord of the sheep went with them, as their leader, and all His sheep followed Him; and his face was dazzling and glorious and terrible to behold. 23 But the wolves began to pursue those sheep until they reached a sea of water. 24 And that sea was divided, and the water stood on this side and on that before their face, and their Lord led them and placed Himself between them and the wolves. 25 And as those wolves did not yet see the sheep, they proceeded into the midst of that sea, and the wolves followed the sheep, and [those wolves] ran after them into that sea. 26 And when they saw the Lord of the sheep, they turned to flee before His face, but that sea gathered itself together, and became as it had been created, and the water swelled and rose till it covered those wolves. 27 And I saw till all the wolves who pursued those sheep perished and were drowned. 28 But the sheep escaped from that water and went forth into a wilderness, where there was no water and no grass; and they began to open their eyes and to see; and I saw the Lord of the sheep pasturing them and giving them water and grass, and that sheep going and leading them. 29 And that sheep ascended to the summit of that lofty rock, and the Lord of the sheep sent it to them. 30 And after that I saw the Lord of the sheep who stood before them, and His appearance was great and terrible and majestic, and all those sheep saw Him and were afraid before His face. 31 And they all feared and trembled because of Him, and they cried to that sheep with them [which was amongst them]: 'We are not able to stand before our Lord or to behold Him.'[218] 32 And that sheep which led them again ascended to the summit of that rock, but the sheep began to be blinded and to wander from the way which he had shown them, but that sheep did not know of it. 33 And the Lord of the sheep was exceedingly angry against them, and that sheep discovered it, and went down from the summit of the rock, and came to the sheep, and found the majority of them blinded and having strayed. 34 And when they saw it they feared and trembled at its presence, and desired to return to their folds. 35 And that sheep took other sheep with it, and came to those sheep which had strayed, and began to slay them; and the sheep feared its presence, and thus that sheep brought back those sheep that had strayed, and they returned to their folds. 36 And I saw in this vision till that sheep became a man and built a house for the Lord of the sheep, and placed all the sheep in that house. 37 And I saw till this sheep which had met that sheep which led them fell asleep; and I saw till all the great sheep perished and little ones arose in their place, and they came to a pasture, and approached a stream of water. 38 Then that sheep, their leader which had become a man, withdrew from them and fell asleep, and all the sheep sought it and cried over it with a great crying. 39 And I saw till they stopped crying for that sheep and crossed that stream of water, and there arose the two sheep as leaders in the place of those which had led them and fallen asleep. 40 And I saw till the sheep came to a pleasant place, and a glorious land, and I saw till those sheep were satisfied; and that house stood amongst them in the pleasant land. 41 And sometimes their eyes were opened, and sometimes blinded, till another sheep arose and led them and brought them all back, and their eyes were opened. 42 And the dogs and the foxes and the wild boars began to devour those sheep till the Lord of the sheep raised up [another sheep] a ram from their midst, which led them. 43 And that ram began to butt on either side those dogs, foxes, and wild boars till he had destroyed them all. 44 And that sheep whose eyes were opened saw that ram, which was amongst the sheep, till it forsake its glory and began to butt those sheep, and trampled upon them, and behaved itself unseemly. 45 And the Lord of the sheep sent the lamb to another lamb and raised it to being a ram and leader of the sheep instead of that ram which had forsaken its glory. 46 And it went to it and spoke to it alone, and raised it to being a ram, and made it the prince and leader of the sheep; but during all these things those dogs oppressed the sheep. 47 And the first ram pursued that second ram, and that second ram arose and fled before it; and I saw till those dogs pulled down the first ram. 48 And that second ram arose and led the [little] sheep. 49 And that ram begat many sheep and fell asleep; and a little sheep became ram in its stead, and became prince and leader of those sheep. 50 And those sheep grew and multiplied; but all the dogs, and foxes, and wild boars feared and fled before it, and that ram butted and killed the wild beasts, and those wild beasts had no longer any power among the sheep and robbed them no more of anything. 51 And that house became great and broad, and it was built for those sheep: (and) a tower lofty and great was built on the house for the Lord of the sheep, and that house was low, but the tower was elevated and lofty, and the Lord of the sheep stood on that tower and they offered a full table before Him. 52 And again I saw those sheep that they again erred and went many ways, and forsook their house, and the Lord of the sheep called some from amongst the sheep and sent them to the sheep, but the sheep began to slay them. 53 And one of them was saved and was not slain, and it sped away and cried aloud over the sheep; and they sought to slay it, but the Lord of the sheep saved it from the sheep, and brought it up to me, and caused it to dwell there. 54 And many other sheep He sent to those sheep to testify unto them and lament over them. 55 And after that I saw that when they forsook the house of the Lord and His tower they fell away entirely, and their eyes were blinded; and I saw the Lord of the sheep how He wrought much slaughter amongst them in their herds until those sheep invited that slaughter and betrayed His place. 56 And He gave them over into the hands of the lions and tigers, and wolves and hyenas, and into the hand of the foxes, and to all the wild beasts, and those wild beasts began to tear in pieces those sheep. 57 And I saw that He forsook their house and their tower and gave them all into the hand of the lions, to tear and devour them, into the hand of all the wild beasts. 58 And I began to cry aloud with all my power, and to appeal to the Lord of the sheep, and to represent to Him in regard to the sheep that they were devoured by all the wild beasts. 59 But He remained unmoved, though He saw it, and rejoiced that they were devoured and swallowed and robbed, and left them to be devoured in the hand of all the beasts. 60 And He called seventy shepherds, and cast those sheep to them that they might pasture them, and He spoke to the shepherds and their companions: 'Let each individual of you pasture the sheep henceforward, and everything that I shall command you that do ye.' 61 And I will deliver them over unto you duly numbered, and tell you which of them are to be destroyed--and them destroy ye.' And He gave over unto them those sheep. 62 And He called another and spoke unto him: 'Observe and mark everything that the shepherds will do to those sheep; for they will destroy more of them than I have commanded them.' 63 And every excess and the destruction which will be wrought through the shepherds, record (namely) how many they destroy according to my command, and how many according to their own caprice: record against every individual shepherd all the destruction he effects.' 64 And read out before me by number how many they destroy, and how many they deliver over for destruction, that I may have this as a testimony against them, and know every deed of the shepherds, that I may comprehend and see what they do, whether or not they abide by my command which I have commanded them. 65 But they shall not know it, and you shall not declare it to them, nor admonish them, but only record against each individual all the destruction which the shepherds effect each in his time and lay it all before me.' 66 And I saw till those shepherds pastured in their season, and they began to slay and to destroy more than they were bidden, and they delivered those sheep into the hand of the lions. 67 And the lions and tigers eat and devoured the greater part of those sheep, and the wild boars ate along with them; and they burnt that tower and demolished that house.[219] 68 And I became exceedingly sorrowful over that tower because that house of the sheep was demolished, and afterwards I was unable to see if those sheep entered that house. 69 And the shepherds and their associates delivered over those sheep to all the wild beasts, to devour them, and each one of them received in his time a definite number: it was written by the other in a book how many each one of them destroyed of them. 70 And each one slew and destroyed many more than was prescribed; and I began to weep and lament on account of those sheep. 71 And thus in the vision I saw that one who wrote, how he wrote down every one that was destroyed by those shepherds, day by day, and carried up and laid down and showed actually the whole book to the Lord of the sheep--(even) everything that they had done, and all that each one of them had made away with, and all that they had given over to destruction. 72 And the book was read before the Lord of the sheep, and He took the book from his hand and read it and sealed it and laid it down. 73 And forthwith I saw how the shepherds pastured for twelve hours, and behold three of those sheep turned back and came and entered and began to build up all that had fallen down of that house; but the wild boars tried to hinder them, but they were not able. 74 And they began again to build as before, and they reared up that tower, and it was named the high tower; and they began again to place a table before the tower, but all the bread on it was polluted and not pure. 75 And as touching all this the eyes of those sheep were blinded so that they saw not, and (the eyes of) their shepherds likewise; and they delivered them in large numbers to their shepherds for destruction, and they trampled the sheep with their feet and devoured them. 76 And the Lord of the sheep remained unmoved till all the sheep were dispersed over the field and mingled with them (i.e. the beasts), and they (i.e. the shepherds) did not save them out of the hand of the beasts. 77 And this one who wrote the book carried it up, and showed it and read it before the Lord of the sheep, and implored Him on their account, and besought Him on their account as he showed Him all the doings of the shepherds, and gave testimony before Him against all the shepherds. And he took the actual book and laid it down beside Him and departed.
And I saw until thirty-five shepherds took turns pasturing the sheep, each completing their term just like the first; then others took over, each in their own time. 2 And after that, I saw in my vision all the birds of heaven coming—the eagles, the vultures, the kites, the ravens; but the eagles led all the birds; and they began to devour those sheep, pecking out their eyes and consuming their flesh. 3 And the sheep cried out because their flesh was being devoured by the birds, and I watched and lamented in my sleep over that shepherd who pastured the sheep. 4 And I saw until those sheep were devoured by the dogs, eagles, and kites, and they left neither flesh nor skin nor sinew on them until only their bones remained; and even their bones fell to the earth, and the sheep became few. 5 And I saw until twenty-three shepherds had pastured and completed their terms fifty-eight times. 6 But behold, lambs were born from those white sheep, and they began to open their eyes and see, and cried out to the sheep.[220] 7 Yes, they cried to them, but they did not listen to what they said to them, but were extremely deaf, and their eyes were exceedingly blinded. 8 And I saw in the vision how the ravens flew upon those lambs and took one of the lambs, and dashed the sheep in pieces and devoured them. 9 And I saw until horns grew upon those lambs, and the ravens cast down their horns; and I saw until a great horn sprouted from one of those sheep, and their eyes were opened. 10 And it looked at them, their eyes opened, and it cried to the sheep, and the rams saw it and all ran to it. 11 And despite all this, those eagles, vultures, ravens, and kites still kept tearing at the sheep and swooping down upon them and devouring them: still the sheep remained silent, but the rams lamented and cried out. 12 And those ravens fought and battled with it and sought to lay low its horn, but they had no power over it. 13 And I saw until the shepherds, eagles, those vultures, and kites came, and they cried to the ravens that they should break the horn of that ram, and they battled and fought with it, and it battled with them and cried that its help might come. 14 And I saw until that man, who wrote down the names of the shepherds and carried up into the presence of the Lord of the sheep, came and helped it and showed it everything: he had come down for the help of that ram. 15 And I saw until the Lord of the sheep came unto them in wrath, and all who saw Him fled, and they all fell into His shadow from before His face. 16 All the eagles and vultures and ravens and kites were gathered together, and there came with them all the sheep of the field, and they all came together, and helped each other to break that horn of the ram. 17 And I saw that man, who wrote the book according to the command of the Lord, until he opened that book concerning the destruction which those twelve last shepherds had wrought, and showed that they had destroyed much more than their predecessors, before the Lord of the sheep. 18 And I saw until the Lord of the sheep came unto them and took in His hand the staff of His wrath, and smote the earth, and the earth split asunder, and all the beasts and all the birds of the heaven fell from among those sheep, and were swallowed up in the earth and it covered them. 19 And I saw until a great sword was given to the sheep, and the sheep proceeded against all the beasts of the field to slay them, and all the beasts and the birds of the heaven fled before their face. 20 And I saw until a throne was erected in the pleasant land, and the Lord of the sheep sat Himself thereon, and the other took the sealed books and opened those books before the Lord of the sheep.[221] 21 And the Lord called those men the seven first white ones, and commanded that they should bring before Him, beginning with the first star which led the way, all the stars whose privy members were like those of horses, and they brought them all before Him. 22 And He said to that man who wrote before Him, being one of those seven white ones, and said unto him: 'Take those seventy shepherds to whom I delivered the sheep, and who taking them on their own authority slew more than I commanded them.' 23 And behold they were all bound, I saw, and they all stood before Him. 24 And the judgement was first held over the stars, and they were judged and found guilty, and went to the place of condemnation, and they were cast into an abyss, full of fire and flaming, and full of pillars of fire. 25 And those seventy shepherds were judged and found guilty, and they were cast into that fiery abyss.[222] 26 And I saw at that time how a similar abyss was opened in the midst of the earth, full of fire, and they brought those blinded sheep, and they were all judged and found guilty and cast into this fiery abyss, and they burned; now this abyss was to the right of that house. 27 And I saw those sheep burning and their bones burning. 28 And I stood up to see until they folded up that old house; and carried off all the pillars, and all the beams and ornaments of the house were at the same time folded up with it, and they carried it off and laid it in a place in the south of the land.[223] 29 And I saw until the Lord of the sheep brought a new house greater and loftier than that first, and set it up in the place of the first which had been folded up: all its pillars were new, and its ornaments were new and larger than those of the first, the old one which He had taken away, and all the sheep were within it. 30 And I saw all the sheep which had been left, and all the beasts on the earth, and all the birds of the heaven, falling down and doing homage to those sheep and making petition to and obeying them in every thing.[224] 31 And thereafter those three who were clothed in white and had seized me by my hand [who had taken me up before], and the hand of that ram also seizing hold of me, they took me up and set me down in the midst of those sheep before the judgement took place. 32 And those sheep were all white, and their wool was abundant and clean. 33 And all that had been destroyed and dispersed, and all the beasts of the field, and all the birds of the heaven, assembled in that house, and the Lord of the sheep rejoiced with great joy because they were all good and had returned to His house. 34 And I saw until they laid down that sword, which had been given to the sheep, and they brought it back into the house, and it was sealed before the presence of the Lord, and all the sheep were invited into that house, but it held them not. 35 And the eyes of them all were opened, and they saw the good, and there was not one among them that did not see. 36 And I saw that that house was large and broad and very full. 37 And I saw that a white bull was born, with large horns and all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air feared him and made petition to him all the time. 38 And I saw until all their generations were transformed, and they all became white bulls; and the first among them became a lamb, and that lamb became a great animal and had great black horns on its head; and the Lord of the sheep rejoiced over it and over all the oxen. 39 And I slept in their midst: and I awoke and saw everything. 40 This is the vision which I saw while I slept, and I awoke and blessed the Lord of righteousness and gave Him glory. 41 Then I wept with a great weeping and my tears did not cease until I could no longer endure it: when I saw, they flowed on account of what I had seen; for everything shall come and be fulfilled, and all the deeds of men in their order were shown to me. 42 On that night I remembered the first dream, and because of it I wept and was troubled—because I had seen that vision.
'And now, my son Methuselah, call to me all your brothers and gather all the sons of your mother; for the word calls me, and the spirit is poured out upon me, that I may show you everything that will happen to you forever.' 2 And thereupon Methuselah went and summoned all his brothers and assembled his relatives. 3 And he spoke to all the children of righteousness and said: 'Listen, sons of Enoch, to all the words of your father, and pay close attention to the sound of my voice; for I urge you and say to you, beloved: Love integrity and walk in its ways. 4 And do not approach integrity with a double heart, and do not associate with those who have a double heart, but walk in righteousness, my sons. It will guide you on good paths, and righteousness will be your companion.[225] 5 For I know that violence must increase on the earth, and a great punishment will be executed on the earth, and all wickedness will come to an end: yes, it will be completely eradicated from its roots, and its entire structure will be destroyed. 6 And wickedness will again be complete on the earth, and all acts of wickedness, violence, and transgression will prevail to a greater degree. 7 And when sin, wickedness, blasphemy, and violence in all kinds of deeds increase, and apostasy, transgression, and impurity increase, a great punishment will come from heaven upon all these, and the holy Lord will come forth with wrath and punishment to execute judgment on earth. 8 In those days, violence will be eradicated from its roots, and the roots of wickedness along with deceit, and they will be destroyed from under heaven. 9 And all the idols of the heathens will be abandoned, and the temples burned with fire, and they will be removed from the whole earth, and they (i.e., the heathens) will be cast into the judgment of fire, and will perish in wrath and in severe judgment forever. 10 And the righteous will awaken from their sleep, and wisdom will arise and be given to them. 11 And after that, the roots of wickedness will be cut off, and sinners will be destroyed by the sword . . . will be cut off from the blasphemers in every place, and those who plan violence and those who commit blasphemy will perish by the sword. 12 And after that, there will be another, the eighth week, that of righteousness, and a sword will be given to it that a righteous judgment may be executed on the oppressors, and sinners will be delivered into the hands of the righteous. 13 And at its end, they will acquire houses through their righteousness, and a house will be built for the Great King in glory forevermore,[226] 14 And all mankind will look to the path of uprightness. 15 And after that, in the ninth week, the righteous judgment will be revealed to the whole world, and all the works of the godless will vanish from all the earth, and the world will be written down for destruction. 16 And after this, in the tenth week in the seventh part, there will be the great eternal judgment, in which He will execute vengeance among the angels. 17 And the first heaven will depart and pass away, and a new heaven will appear, and all the powers of the heavens will give sevenfold light.[227] 18 And after that there will be many weeks without number forever, and all will be in goodness and righteousness, and sin will no longer be mentioned forever. 19 And now I tell you, my sons, and show you the paths of righteousness and the paths of violence. Yes, I will show them to you again that you may know what will come to pass.[228] 20 And now, listen to me, my sons, and walk in the paths of righteousness, and do not walk in the paths of violence; for all who walk in the paths of unrighteousness shall perish forever.'
The book written by Enoch—[Enoch indeed wrote this complete doctrine of wisdom, praised by all men and a judge of all the earth] for all my children who shall dwell on the earth. And for future generations who shall uphold integrity and peace. 2 Let not your spirit be troubled on account of the times; for the Holy and Great One has appointed days for all things. 3 And the righteous one shall arise from sleep, [Shall arise] and walk in the paths of righteousness, and all his ways and actions shall be in eternal goodness and grace.[229] 4 He will be gracious to the righteous and grant him eternal uprightness, and He will empower him so that he shall be endowed with goodness and righteousness. And he shall walk in eternal light.[230] 5 And sin shall perish in darkness forever, and shall no more be seen from that day forevermore.
And after that, Enoch began to recount from the books. And Enoch said: 'Concerning the children of righteousness, the elect of the world, and the plant of uprightness, I will speak these things. Yes, I, Enoch, will declare them to you, my sons: According to what appeared to me in the heavenly vision, and what I have known through the word of the holy angels, and have learned from the heavenly tablets.' 2 And Enoch began to recount from the books and said: 'I was born the seventh in the first week, while judgment and righteousness still prevailed. 3 And after me, in the second week, great wickedness will arise, and deceit shall have sprung up; and in it there shall be the first end. And in it a man shall be saved; and after it is ended, unrighteousness shall grow up, and a law shall be made for the sinners. 4 And after that, in the third week at its close, a man shall be elected as the plant of righteous judgment, and his descendants shall become the plant of righteousness forevermore. 5 And after that, in the fourth week, at its close, visions of the holy and righteous shall be seen, and a law for all generations and an enclosure shall be made for them. 6 And after that, in the fifth week, at its close, the house of glory and dominion shall be built forever.[231] 7 And after that, in the sixth week, all who live in it shall be blinded, and the hearts of all of them shall godlessly forsake wisdom. And in it, a man shall ascend; and at its close, the house of dominion shall be burnt with fire, and the whole race of the chosen root shall be dispersed. 8 And after that, in the seventh week, an apostate generation shall arise, and many shall be its deeds, and all its deeds shall be apostate.[232] 9 And at its close, the elect righteous of the eternal plant of righteousness shall be elected, to receive sevenfold instruction concerning all His creation. 10 For who is there of all the children of men that is able to hear the voice of the Holy One without being troubled? And who can think His thoughts? And who is there that can behold all the works of heaven? 11 And how should there be one who could behold the heaven, and who is there that could understand the things of heaven and see a soul or a spirit and could tell thereof, or ascend and see all their ends and think them or do like them? 12 And who is there of all men that could know what is the breadth and the length of the earth, and to whom has been shown the measure of all of them? 13 Or is there anyone who could discern the length of the heaven and how great is its height, and upon what it is founded, and how great is the number of the stars, and where all the luminaries rest?
And now I say to you, my sons, love righteousness and walk in its paths; for the paths of righteousness are worthy of acceptance, but the paths of unrighteousness shall suddenly be destroyed and vanish. 2 And to some men of a generation, the paths of violence and of death will be revealed, and they shall keep themselves far from them, and shall not follow them. 3 And now I say to you, the righteous: Do not walk in the paths of wickedness, nor in the paths of death, and do not draw near to them, lest you be destroyed. 4 But seek and choose for yourselves righteousness and an elect life, and walk in the paths of peace, and you shall live and prosper. 5 And hold fast to my words in the thoughts of your hearts, and do not let them be erased from your hearts; for I know that sinners will tempt men to mistreat wisdom, so that no place may be found for her, and no manner of temptation may diminish her. 6 Woe to those who build unrighteousness and oppression and lay deceit as a foundation; for they shall be suddenly overthrown, and they shall have no peace. 7 Woe to those who build their houses with sin; for from all their foundations shall they be overthrown, and by the sword shall they fall. [And those who acquire gold and silver in judgement suddenly shall perish.][233] 8 Woe to you, you rich, for you have trusted in your riches, and from your riches shall you depart, because you have not remembered the Most High in the days of your riches.[234] 9 You have committed blasphemy and unrighteousness, and have become ready for the day of slaughter, and the day of darkness and the day of the great judgement. 10 Thus I speak and declare to you: He who created you will overthrow you, and for your fall there shall be no compassion, and your Creator will rejoice at your destruction. 11 And your righteous ones in those days shall be a reproach to the sinners and the godless.
Oh, if only my eyes were a cloud of waters, that I might weep over you, and pour down my tears as a cloud of waters, so that I might have rest from my troubled heart![235] 2 Who has allowed you to engage in reproaches and wickedness? And so, judgment shall overtake you, sinners. 3 Do not fear the sinners, you righteous; for the Lord will again deliver them into your hands, that you may execute judgment upon them according to your desires. 4 Woe to you who pronounce curses that cannot be reversed: Healing will therefore be far from you because of your sins. 5 Woe to you who repay your neighbor with evil; for you shall be repaid according to your deeds. 6 Woe to you, lying witnesses, and to those who dispense injustice, for suddenly you shall perish. 7 Woe to you, sinners, for you persecute the righteous; for you shall be delivered up and persecuted because of your injustice, and heavy shall its yoke be upon you.
Be hopeful, you righteous; for suddenly the sinners will perish before you, and you will have dominion over them according to your desires.[236] 2 And on the day of the tribulation of the sinners, your children shall rise and soar as eagles, and higher than the vultures will be your nest. You shall ascend and enter the crevices of the earth and the clefts of the rock forever, like coneys before the unrighteous, while the sirens will mourn because of you and weep. 3 Therefore, do not fear, you who have suffered; for healing shall be your portion, and a bright light shall illuminate you, and the voice of rest you shall hear from heaven. 4 Woe to you, sinners, for your riches make you appear like the righteous, but your hearts convict you of being sinners. This fact shall serve as a testimony against you as a memorial of your evil deeds.[237] 5 Woe to you who consume the finest of the wheat and drink wine from large bowls, and trample the lowly with your might.[238] 6 Woe to you who drink water from every fountain, for suddenly you shall be consumed and wither away, because you have forsaken the fountain of life. 7 Woe to you who practice unrighteousness, deceit, and blasphemy: it shall be a memorial against you for evil. 8 Woe to you, mighty ones, who oppress the righteous with your might; for the day of your destruction is coming. In those days, many and good days shall come to the righteous—in the day of your judgment.
Believe, you righteous, that the sinners will become a disgrace and perish on the day of unrighteousness. 2 Be it known to you, sinners, that the Most High is mindful of your destruction, and the angels of heaven rejoice over your demise. 3 What will you do, sinners, and where will you flee on the day of judgment, when you hear the voice of the prayer of the righteous? 4 Indeed, you will fare like those against whom this word will be a testimony: 'You have been companions of sinners.' 5 And in those days, the prayers of the righteous will reach unto the Lord, and for you, the days of your judgment shall come. 6 And all the words of your unrighteousness shall be read out before the Great Holy One, and your faces shall be covered with shame, and He will reject every work that is grounded on unrighteousness. 7 Woe to you, sinners, who live on the mid ocean and on dry land, whose remembrance is evil against you. 8 Woe to you who acquire silver and gold in unrighteousness and say: 'We have become rich with wealth and have possessions; and have acquired everything we have desired.'[239] 9 And now let us do what we purposed: for we have gathered silver, 10 And many are the husbandmen in our houses. 11 And our granaries are brimming full as with water, 12 Yet like water, your lies shall flow away; for your wealth shall not remain but will quickly depart from you; for you have acquired it all in unrighteousness, and you shall be subjected to a great curse.
And now I swear unto you, to the wise and to the foolish, for you shall experience many things on the earth. 2 For men shall wear more adornments than a woman, and colored garments more than a virgin: in royalty, grandeur, and power, and in silver, gold, and purple, and in splendor and food they shall be lavished as water. 3 Therefore, they shall lack teaching and wisdom, and shall perish along with their possessions; and with all their glory and splendor, and in shame, slaughter, and great poverty, their spirits shall be cast into the furnace of fire. 4 I have sworn unto you, sinners, as a mountain has not become a servant, nor a hill the handmaid of a woman, so sin has not been sent upon the earth, but man has created it himself, and those who commit it shall fall under a great curse.[240] 5 And barrenness has not been given to the woman, but because of the deeds of her own hands she dies without children. 6 I have sworn unto you, sinners, by the Holy Great One, that all your evil deeds are revealed in the heavens, and none of your deeds of oppression are concealed or hidden. 7 And do not think in your spirit nor say in your heart that you do not know or see that every sin is recorded every day in heaven in the presence of the Most High.[241] 8 From now on you know that all your oppression with which you oppress is recorded every day until the day of your judgment. 9 Woe to you, fools, for through your folly you shall perish; and you transgress against the wise, and good fortune shall not be your lot. 10 And now, know that you are prepared for the day of destruction; therefore, do not hope to live, sinners, but you shall depart and die; for you know no ransom; for you are prepared for the day of great judgment, for the day of tribulation and great shame for your spirits. 11 Woe to you, stubborn of heart, who work wickedness and eat blood: From where do you expect to receive good things to eat, drink, and be satisfied? From all the good things which the Lord the Most High has placed abundantly on the earth; therefore, you shall have no peace.[242] 12 Woe to you who love the deeds of unrighteousness: why do you hope for good fortune for yourselves? Know that you shall be delivered into the hands of the righteous, and they shall cut off your heads and slay you, and have no mercy upon you. 13 Woe to you who rejoice in the tribulation of the righteous; for no grave shall be dug for you. 14 Woe to you who scorn the words of the righteous; for you shall have no hope of life. 15 Woe to you who write down lying and godless words; for they write their lies so that men may hear them and act wickedly towards their neighbors. 16 Therefore, you shall have no peace but die a sudden death.[243]
Woe to you who engage in godlessness, and glory in lying and extol them: You shall perish, and no happy life shall be yours. 2 Woe to those who distort the words of truth, and violate the eternal law, and transform themselves into what they were not [into sinners]: They shall be trodden underfoot upon the earth.[244] 3 In those days, prepare yourselves, righteous ones, to raise your prayers as a memorial, and set them as a testimony before the angels, that they may present the sins of the sinners as a memorial before the Most High.[245] 4 In those days the nations shall be stirred up, and the families of the nations shall rise on the day of destruction.[246] 5 And in those days the impoverished shall go forth and carry off their children, and they shall abandon them, so that their children shall perish through them: Yes, they shall abandon their suckling children and not return to them, and shall have no pity on their loved ones. 6 And again I swear to you, sinners, that sin is prepared for a day of unceasing bloodshed.[247] 7 And those who worship stones, and grave images of gold, silver, wood, stone, and clay, and those who worship impure spirits and demons, and all kinds of idols not according to knowledge, shall receive no help from them. 8 And they shall become godless by reason of the folly of their hearts, and their eyes shall be blinded through the fear of their hearts and through visions in their dreams.[248] 9 Through these, they shall become godless and fearful; for they shall have conducted all their work in a lie, and shall have worshiped a stone: Therefore, they shall perish instantly. 10 But in those days, blessed are all who accept the words of wisdom, understand them, observe the paths of the Most High, and walk in the path of His righteousness, and do not become godless with the godless; for they shall be saved. 11 Woe to you who spread evil to your neighbors; for you shall be slain in Sheol. 12 Woe to you who make deceitful and false measures, and to those who cause bitterness on the earth; for they shall be utterly consumed. 13 Woe to you who build your houses through the grievous toil of others, and all their building materials are the bricks and stones of sin; I tell you, you shall have no peace. 14 Woe to those who reject the measure and eternal heritage of their fathers and whose souls follow after idols; for they shall have no rest. 15 Woe to those who commit unrighteousness, aid oppression, and slay their neighbors until the day of the great judgment. 16 For He shall cast down your glory, inflict affliction on your hearts, arouse His fierce indignation, and destroy you all with the sword; and all the holy and righteous shall remember your sins.
In those days, in one place, fathers together with their sons shall be smitten, and brothers will fall in death with one another until the streams flow with their blood. 2 For a man shall not spare his hand from slaying his sons and his sons' sons, and the sinner shall not spare his hand from his honored brother: from dawn till sunset they shall slay one another. 3 And the horse shall wade up to the breast in the blood of sinners, and the chariot shall be submerged to its height.[249] 4 In those days, the angels shall descend into the secret places and gather together all those who brought down sin, and the Most High will arise on that day of judgment to execute great judgment among sinners. 5 And over all the righteous and holy, He will appoint guardians from among the holy angels to guard them as the apple of an eye, until He makes an end of all wickedness and all sin, and though the righteous sleep a long sleep, they have nothing to fear.[250] 6 Then the children of the earth shall see the wise in security, and shall understand all the words of this book, and recognize that their riches shall not be able to save them in the overthrow of their sins. 7 Woe to you, Sinners, on the day of strong anguish, you who afflict the righteous and burn them with fire: you shall be repaid according to your works. 8 Woe to you, you obstinate of heart, who watch to devise wickedness: therefore, fear shall come upon you and there shall be none to help you. 9 Woe to you, sinners, because of the words of your mouth, and because of the deeds of your hands which your godlessness has wrought, in blazing flames burning worse than fire shall you burn. 10 And now, know that from the angels He will inquire as to your deeds in heaven, from the sun and from the moon and from the stars in reference to your sins because upon the earth you execute judgment on the righteous. 11 And He will summon to testify against you every cloud, mist, dew, and rain; for they shall all be withheld because of you from descending upon you, and they shall be mindful of your sins.[251] 12 And now give presents to the rain that it may not be withheld from descending upon you, nor yet the dew, when it has received gold and silver from you that it may descend. 13 When the hoar-frost and snow with their cold, and all the snowstorms with all their plagues fall upon you, in those days you shall not be able to stand before them.
Observe the heavens, you children of heaven, and every work of the Most High, and fear Him and commit no evil in His presence. 2 If He closes the windows of heaven and withholds the rain and the dew from descending on the earth because of you, what will you do then? 3 And if He directs His anger against you because of your deeds, can you plead with Him when you have spoken arrogantly against His righteousness? Thus, you will have no peace.[252] 4 Do you not see the ship captains, how their ships are tossed by the waves, rocked by the winds, and put in danger? 5 Therefore, they fear because all their valuable possessions are aboard, and they worry that the sea will swallow them and they will perish therein. 6 Are not the entire sea and all its waters, and all its movements, the work of the Most High? Has He not set limits to its actions and confined it throughout by the sand?[253] 7 And at His reproof, it is afraid and dries up, and all its fish die and everything in it; yet you sinners on the earth do not fear Him.[254] 8 Has He not made the heavens and the earth, and all that is within them? Who has given understanding and wisdom to everything that moves on the earth and in the sea?[255] 9 Do not the sailors of the ships fear the sea? Yet sinners do not fear the Most High.[256]
In those days, when he unleashes a fierce fire upon you, where will you flee and where will you find safety? And when he speaks out against you, will you not be shaken and afraid?[257] 2 And all the luminaries shall be struck with great fear, and all the earth shall be frightened and tremble and be alarmed. 3 And all the angels shall carry out their commands and shall seek to hide themselves from the presence of the Great Glory, and the children of earth shall tremble and quake; and you sinners shall be cursed forever, and you shall have no peace. 4 Fear not, you souls of the righteous, and be hopeful, you that have died in righteousness. 5 And grieve not if your soul has descended into Sheol in grief, and that in your life your body did not fare according to your goodness, but wait for the day of the judgment of sinners and for the day of cursing and chastisement. 6 And when you die, the sinners will say about you: 'Just as we have died, so also the righteous have died; and what gain did they have from their works?'[258] 7 Behold, just as we do, so do they die in grief and darkness, and what advantage do they have over us? From henceforth we are equal. 8 And what will they receive and what will they see forever? Behold, they too have died, and henceforth forever shall they see no light.' 9 I say to you, you sinners, you are content to eat and drink and rob and sin and strip people bare and accumulate wealth and see good days.[259] 10 Have you observed the righteous how their end transpires, that no violence is found in them until their death? 11 'Nevertheless, they perished and became as though they had not been, and their spirits descended into Sheol in tribulation.'
Now, therefore, I swear to you, the righteous, by the glory of the Great and Honored and Mighty One in dominion, and by His greatness I swear to you:[260] 2 I know a mystery and have read the heavenly tablets, and have seen the holy books, and have found written therein and inscribed regarding them:[261] 3 That all goodness, joy, and glory are prepared for them, and written down for the spirits of those who have died in righteousness, and that manifold good will be given to you in recompense for your labors, and that your lot is abundantly beyond the lot of the living. 4 And the spirits of you who have died in righteousness shall live and rejoice, and their spirits shall not perish, nor their memorial from before the face of the Great One unto all the generations of the world: wherefore no longer fear their contumely.[262] 5 Woe to you, sinners, when you have died, if you die in the wealth of your sins, and those who are like you say regarding you: 'Blessed are the sinners: they have seen all their days. 6 And how they have died in prosperity and in wealth, and have not seen tribulation or murder in their life; and they have died in honor, and judgment has not been executed on them during their life.' 7 Know that your souls will be made to descend into Sheol and you will be wretched in your great tribulation. 8 And into darkness and chains and a burning flame where there is grievous judgment shall your spirits enter; and the great judgment shall be for all the generations of the world. Woe to you, for you shall have no peace. 9 Do not say in regard to the righteous and good who are in life: 'In our troubled days we have toiled laboriously and experienced every trouble, and met with much evil and been consumed, and have become few and our spirit small. 10 And we have been destroyed and have not found anyone to help us even with a word: We have been tortured and destroyed, and not hoped to see life from day to day. 11 We hoped to be the head and have become the tail: We have toiled laboriously and had no satisfaction in our toil; and we have become the food of the sinners and the unrighteous, and they have laid their yoke heavily upon us.[263] 12 They have had dominion over us that hated us and smote us; and to those that hated us we have bowed our necks but they pitied us not. 13 We desired to get away from them that we might escape and be at rest, but found no place whereunto we should flee and be safe from them.[264] 14 And we complained to the rulers in our tribulation, and cried out against those who devoured us, but they did not attend to our cries and would not hearken to our voice. 15 And they helped those who robbed us and devoured us and those who made us few; and they concealed their oppression, and they did not remove from us the yoke of those that devoured us and dispersed us and murdered us, and they concealed their murder, and remembered not that they had lifted up their hands against us.
I swear to you, that in heaven the angels remember you for good before the glory of the Great One: and your names are written before the glory of the Great One.[265] 2 Be hopeful; for previously you were shamed through suffering and affliction; but now you shall shine as the lights of heaven, you shall shine and you shall be seen, and the portals of heaven shall be opened to you.[266] 3 And in your cry, cry for judgment, and it shall appear to you; for all your tribulation shall be visited on the rulers, and on all who helped those who plundered you. 4 Be hopeful, and do not cast away your hopes for you shall have great joy as the angels of heaven. 5 What shall you be obliged to do? You shall not have to hide on the day of the great judgment and you shall not be found as sinners, and the eternal judgment shall be far from you for all the generations of the world. 6 And now, fear not, you righteous, when you see the sinners growing strong and prospering in their ways: do not be companions with them, but keep afar from their violence; for you shall become companions of the hosts of heaven. 7 And, although you sinners say: 'All our sins shall not be searched out and written down,' nevertheless, all your sins shall be recorded every day. 8 And now I show you that light and darkness, day and night, see all your sins. 9 Don't be godless in your hearts, and do not lie nor alter the words of uprightness, nor charge with lying the words of the Holy Great One, nor take account of your idols; for all your lying and all your godlessness do not result in righteousness but in great sin.[267] 10 And now I know this mystery, that sinners will alter and pervert the words of righteousness in many ways, and will speak wicked words, and lie, and practice great deceits, and write books concerning their words. 11 But when they write down truthfully all my words in their languages, and do not change or diminish anything from my words but write them all down truthfully - all that I first testified concerning them. 12 Then, I know another mystery, that books will be given to the righteous and the wise to become a cause of joy and uprightness and much wisdom. 13 And to them the books will be given, and they will believe in them and rejoice over them, and then all the righteous who have learned from all the paths of uprightness will be recompensed.
In those days, the Lord commanded them to summon and testify to the children of earth concerning their wisdom: Show it to them; for you are their guides, and a recompense over the whole earth. 2 For I and My son will be united with them forever in the paths of uprightness in their lives; and you shall have peace: rejoice, you children of uprightness. Amen.
After some days my son Methuselah found a wife for his son Lamech, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. 2 He said to him: “Here I am, my son. Why have you come to me?” 3 His body was white like snow and red like a blooming rose. The hair on his head and his long curls were white like wool, and his eyes were beautiful. When he opened his eyes, he lit the whole house like the sun, and the house shone brightly.[268] 4 Then he rose up in the hands of the midwife, opened his mouth, and spoke with the Lord of righteousness. 5 His father Lamech was afraid of him and ran away, coming to his father Methuselah. 6 He said to him: “I have fathered a strange son, different from any human, resembling the sons of the God of heaven. His nature is different, and he is not like us. His eyes are like rays of the sun, and his face is glorious.[269] 7 It seems to me that he was not born from me but from the angels, and I fear that in his days something extraordinary may happen on the earth. 8 Now, my father, I am asking you to go to Enoch, our father, and learn the truth from him, for he lives among the angels.” 9 When Methuselah heard his son’s words, he came to me at the ends of the earth, for he had heard I was there. He cried out, and I heard his voice and came to him.[270] 10 He said: “I have come to you because of great anxiety, and because a troubling vision has driven me here. 11 Now, my father, listen to me. To Lamech my son a child has been born, unmatched by any other, and his nature is not like that of humans. The color of his body is whiter than snow and redder than the bloom of a rose. The hair of his head is whiter than wool, and his eyes are like the rays of the sun. When he opened them, he lit the whole house. 12 He rose in the hands of the midwife, opened his mouth, and blessed the Lord of heaven. 13 His father Lamech became afraid and fled to me, convinced that this child was not his, but one in the likeness of the angels of heaven. And now I have come to you so that you may tell me the truth.” 14 I, Enoch, answered and said to him: “The Lord will bring something new upon the earth, and I have already seen it in a vision. I tell you that in the generation of my father Jared, some of the angels of heaven broke the word of the Lord. 15 They sinned and broke the command, joining themselves to women and committing sin with them. They married some of them and had children by them. 16 A great destruction will come upon the whole earth. There will be a flood and a great devastation for one year. 17 This son who has been born to you will remain on the earth, and his three children will be saved with him. When all other people on the earth die, he and his sons will survive. 18 They will bring forth on the earth giants born not from the spirit but from the flesh. A great punishment will come upon the earth, and the earth will be cleansed from all impurity. 19 Now tell your son Lamech that the child who has been born is truly his son, and name him Noah. He will remain with you, and he and his sons will be saved from the destruction that will come upon the earth because of all the sin and all the wrongdoing that will reach its full measure in his days. 20 And after that, even more wrongdoing will arise than what first appeared on the earth. For I know the mysteries of the holy ones, for the Lord has shown them to me and informed me, and I have read them on the heavenly tablets.”[271]
And I saw written on them that generation upon generation shall transgress, until a generation of righteousness arises, and transgression is destroyed and sin passes away from the earth, and all manner of good comes upon it. 2 And now, my son, go and make known to your son Lamech that this son, which has been born, is truly his son, and that this is no lie.[272] 3 And when Methuselah had heard the words of his father Enoch—for he had shown him everything in secret—he returned and showed them to him and named that son Noah; for he will comfort the earth after all the destruction.
Another book which Enoch wrote for his son Methuselah and for those who will come after him, and keep the law in the last days. 2 You who have observed it will wait for these days until an end is made of those who do evil and the power of wrongdoers comes to an end. 3 You, however, wait until sin passes away; for their names will be erased from the book of life and from the books of the holy ones. And their seed will be destroyed forever.[273] 4 And I saw there something like an invisible cloud; for by reason of its depth I could not look over, and I saw a flame of fire blazing brightly, and things like shining mountains circling and sweeping to and fro. 5 And I asked one of the holy angels who was with me and said unto him: 'What is this shining thing? for it is not a heaven but only the flame of a blazing fire, and the voice of weeping, crying, and strong pain.'[274] 6 And he said unto me: 'This place which you see—here are cast the spirits of sinners and blasphemers, and of those who work wickedness, and of those who pervert everything that the Lord hath spoken through the mouth of the prophets—the things that shall be. 7 For some of them are written and inscribed above in heaven, in order that the angels may read them and know what shall befall the sinners, and the spirits of the humble, and of those who have afflicted their bodies, and been recompensed by God; and of those who have been put to shame by wicked men. 8 Who loved God and loved neither gold nor silver nor any of the good things which are in the world, but gave over their bodies to torture.[275] 9 Who, since they came into being, longed not after earthly food, but regarded everything as a passing breath, and lived accordingly, and the Lord tested them greatly, and their spirits were found pure so that they should bless His name.[276] 10 And all the blessings destined for them I have recounted in the books. And he has assigned them their reward, because they have been found to be such as loved heaven more than their life in the world, and though they were trodden underfoot by wicked men, and experienced abuse and reviling from them and were put to shame, yet they blessed Me.[277] 11 And now I will summon the spirits of the good who belong to the generation of light, and I will transform those who were born in darkness, who in the flesh were not recompensed with such honor as their faithfulness deserved. 12 And I will bring forth in shining light those who have loved My holy name, and I will seat each on the throne of his honor.[278] 13 And they shall be resplendent for times without number; for righteousness is the judgment of God; for to the faithful He will give faithfulness in the habitation of upright paths. 14 And they shall see those who were born in darkness led into darkness, while the righteous shall shine brightly. 15 And the sinners shall cry aloud and see them resplendent, and they indeed will go where days and seasons are prescribed for them.[279]
