Genesis 19:28

Hebrew Bible

26 But Lot’s wife looked back longingly and was turned into a pillar of salt. 27 Abraham got up early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before the Lord. 28 He looked out toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of that region. As he did so, he saw the smoke rising up from the land like smoke from a furnace. 29 So when God destroyed the cities of the region, God honored Abraham’s request. He removed Lot from the midst of the destruction when he destroyed the cities Lot had lived in. 30 Lot went up from Zoar with his two daughters and settled in the mountains because he was afraid to live in Zoar. So he lived in a cave with his two daughters.

Revelation 9:2

New Testament

1 Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the abyss. 2 He opened the shaft of the abyss and smoke rose out of it like smoke from a giant furnace. The sun and the air were darkened with smoke from the shaft. 3 Then out of the smoke came locusts onto the earth, and they were given power like that of the scorpions of the earth. 4 They were told not to damage the grass of the earth, or any green plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their forehead. 5 The locusts were not given permission to kill them, but only to torture them for five months, and their torture was like that of a scorpion when it stings a person. 6 In those days people will seek death, but will not be able to find it; they will long to die, but death will flee from them.

 Notes and References

"... Furnace: A smelting oven of limestone; kiln or oven for making bricks (Genesis 19:28; Exodus 19:18; compare 9:8, 10; Amos 2:1) ... A large crucible, apparently with an opening at the top for casting in materials (Daniel 3:22–23) and a door at the ground from which to take the metal (verse 26). The Persians used this device for inflicting capital punishment (compare Jeremiah 29:22; Hosea 7:7; 2 Maccabees 7:5) ... A cylindrical fire pot such as is commonly used in dwelling houses in the East (Genesis 15:17, “oven” or “fire pot”). They are still in use among the Arabs. New Testament references to a furnace are found in Matthew 13:42, 50; Revelation 1:15; 9:2 ..."
