Notes and References

"... The identification of the motif of a passage is always in a situation when God poses a question. In Genesis 3:9, God’s question to Adam is retained in the Septuagint (Ἀδάµ, ποῦ εἶ;) which proved to be problematic for ancient anti-Christian critiques. When God speaks to David concerning the construction of the temple in 2 Samuel 7:5, however, the interrogative particle ה of the Masoretic text is replaced by the particle οὐ in a statement of prohibition, influenced by 1 Chronicles 17:4. It was not David but Solomon who built the temple,114 and it seemed impossible for the translator to attribute to God a possibility that did not, in fact, come to pass ..."
